As the title really, I'm looking to buy another car this weekend and it's between a Touareg or Range Rover. Iv researched them so much that my eyes are bleeding. Decision was based on value for money really (circa 9k) and the need to take dog and bikes out and about as well as having a bit of a work horse for towing, picking up big things etc. ill still have the ED for fun but wanted something with some poke as its in my nature.
I'd fancied a range rover for ages but having looked at numerous shoddy examples it seems that you still have to pay in excess of 10k for what will become a ten year old car. The Touareg on the other hand offers a fun engine and lots of toys and a younger car for less money. Granted there are better looking cars out there. MPG isn't that much of an issue as I work away and have the ED for Erm.. Economy lol.
Sorry for the long winded introduction I just wondered if anyone here has much experience with either car?
Touareg would be the V10 as the 2.5 is under powered Range Rover would be TD6 or 4.4 with LPG perhaps.

My old man has an evoque now but he had a 2003 range rover vogue. It was unreliable and expensive to look after. Beautiful car though. After the third rad went on it he started getting them free. He had the air suspension go. Few other bits. He bought the car brand new form them too.
I would rather have the range but the vw will cost less to run servicing wise i reckon. :happy2:
-
Your confirming my thoughts, iv read so much about air suspension, gearbox, radiator, power steering and engine issues. They are a good looking car but at £1-2k per gearbox and torque converter it could be a miserable time. I'd love an evoque ha.
At least I'm familiar with VW and it's parts.

You want to spend 10k on a piece of sh*t that drug dealers drive?
If you want a 4x4 then buy a Disco or Defender - they will fall apart though. If you want a Luxo tractor, get a LOLVO XC90. If you want street cred, get a G Wagon. If you want to pretend you're in the UN, get a Landcruiser. If you want to go fast, get an X5.
-
The father-in-law has a Disco TDI, purpose built with the rear seats removed, for exactly the things you said. First thing he done was get it remapped. :driver: Not experienced it myself but he said it transformed the car no end :driver: :driver: :driver:

Here's an off the wall option for you if you're not a badge snob. My wife has a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 Auto. Fantastic car, comfortable, reliable, loads of space, etc. etc. Got this after we had a Range Rover Sport. Would take the Santy any day over the RR sport, loads more space, more economical and far cheaper to run, tax and insure.
-
Haha disco of win! they are very good value for money.
It's not so much about being a badge snob and to be fair Hyundai have some amazing value kit, a santy just wouldn't be for me. nothing wrong with them at all though.
-
The evoques arent all that. The big proper ones are much better. He had a few disc's too and i always liked them! :happy2:

How's about Jimmy Savile's old Rape Rover? Comes with a bed in the back, sink between the front seats and privacy curtains. I kid you not!

I Know The Saville stuff is a serious business and should not be taken lightly, but i came across this last night.

On a more topical note, you must really love your dogs, How much are running and servicing costs on a toe rag. They must do about 12MPG. :chicken:
-
You'll get way more than 12..... 20MPG I would have thought. Easily!
-
.
Not really an appropriate suggestion due to being mega expensive but we can dream!:

Drug dealers might drive Touareg's in your little Chrshire village but in Liverpool X5's seem to be the car of choice. Did you just advise me to get a Volvo..
With respect mate my post was designed to find out people's experience of both the mentioned cars, if you view them as a piece of sh*t well that's fine, how about you keep it to yourself though, or tell me how your personal experience of either brings you to refer to them on that way.

I usually get that out of the golf :)

I have a RRS with hst kit, and yes its not old being on a 60 plate but build quality and reliability has come on leaps and bounds with them.i know a lot of people with either these or discos and have no issues. Besides i have 5 yrs warranty so if anything fails im not concerned. :P
-
I know that doesnt help with going for an older model that may have issues but you could maybe get a slightly newer one if you were in any sort of position to. :happy2:
-
Nice motor indeed! a bit too good to be a work horse / 2nd car but I notice that 55 plate td6's are becoming very affordable. 60 plate, that's slightly out of my price range though :happy2:
-
Right off the wall but drive one....
Peugeot 4007
Get the 2.2 HDI with the DSG flappy paddles and sports mode and you will be very pleasantly surprised.
Averaging 35mpg
The Citroen c crosser is the same car with a cheaper looking interior
7 seats too go for a GT and get leather cruise and a load of other stuff. We've got a 4007GT auto and its great
-
My advice is not to get a RRS without a decent warranty.
-
You can't get a hst on a 60 plate RRS!
Also I'd be looking for a decent td6 with lots of history and bills for the expensive bits lol.
Good cars but getting old and more expensive to run/maintain like the old P38's?
-
Well I'm a Landrover technician so maybe a bit biased towards the rangerover but from my experience you can't beat them for an all round motor very comfy very capable off road and great on the road too. Yes they go wrong sometimes but they are not as bad as people make out.
Common problems for them are front diffs but was a recall to sort this so it should be sorted for a good few years if its had it done!
Brake calipers can seize up but usually down to not bein used often enough.
Not seen that many problems with air suspension on the rangerovers to be honest mainly disco 3's that have that problem!
Great engines in them td6 is BMW engine in the 8 years I've worked on them I've never seen one fail so to me kind of proves they are a good engine!
Seen a few gearbox problems but not that many to put me off buying one
All in all I'd have one if I could afford one give it a good check over for rust aswell as have seen a couple quite rusty underneath as they are getting on.
Any questions on Landrovers just ask and I should be able to answer haha

i apologise i meant HSE kit as per pics of mine below:-

Good times, thought you was.

No problem bud wouldn't get trade discount unless I bought it myself unfortunately I do get parts at trade price though
-
I've had two TD6's in the past four years, the first was a 02 reg Vogue bought in 2008 and wasn't a scrap of bother for the 12 months I owned it but I started to hear of them breaking and my wallet got scared so I sold it for a tidy profit.
I had a couple of other cars and then bought a 2003 model HSE in 2010 because I missed the luxury motoring of my first but WHAT a mistake! They are beautiful cars when running properly but I spent nearly £5k in six months keeping it on the road, with airbag suspension faults, compressor failures, injector problems etc.
I always vowed that I would only ever buy another one if it was less than 3 years old and still in warranty. I know that you have already mentioned the X5 and probably ruled it out, but my father in law bought a facelift 2006 3.0d sport recently for around your budget and its a fantastic motor, good perfromance and economy for the size (35mpg) but like any luxury brand, could still be big bucks as/when it breaks.
Can't really comment on the VW other than you don't hear as many horror stories
Are the 3.0 tdi touraegs still fetching good money then? You're right to ignore the 2.5 version, woefully underpowered.
-
Have you considered something like this
