Hi All.
I have an issue, i was driving to the pub for my usual friday night beer, i pulled away from some lights then suddenly something went POP and now the exhaust is loud as fcuk sounds like and Impreza, power is down but it still revs freely, its shaking its tits off when on idle (1000rmp) and the emissions light was flashing but now is on solid. obviously its very dark and i cannot see anything even if i could i wouldnt know what i was looking for. i changed my DV to a revision D in september and my car was serviced and MOT'd earlier today which it passed with no issues and the mechanic never mentioned anything. do you guys have any ideas, i do have a video of the issue on my phone but it doesnt really sound like what im actually hearing. but i can upload it if that would help. Cheers in advance, Dean

Coil pack probably. £30 from dealer or call the aa as they sometimes carry them :happy2:
-
Definately a coil pack mate

Sounds like coil/plug has blown. Id bet that you have a missfire in a cylinder. I wouldnt drive it if possible until fixed, on a previous car (vag) engine i ended up throwing the timing through a similar problem ( engine was really shaking at idle, limiter kicked in meaning i couldnt go over 30 backfiring loads no power etc. i think if i remember the coil had gone.
but i dont remember it gojng pop or bang.
Personally i would remove the engine cover and remove coils and spark plugs inspect, check for water etc or dirty spark plugs first. or if you have vagcom/know someone with vagcom get it scanned and post the code.

Really? That sounds great if it would be that as im broke, we are just moving into a new house, what does the coil pack do?
-
hold on a minute, your car was serviced and motd today ?
that's to much of a coincidence there, bet they have done something wrong on the service, did they change your spark plugs ? I would call the garage in question first thing in the morning
I am thinking they have damaged a spark plug, a faulty spark plug or the housing or something
the car would have been motd before the service so there is something you have in your corner straight away when you phone them
go and kick their arse buddy and let us know how you got on

i just had the oild and filters changed as i had the plugs done last year. but they would of still took the engine cover of and possibly mislodged a spark plug or cable. i will take the engine cover of first thing in the morning and see if i can see anything loose or come off. so basically you guys all reckon the engine is running on 3 cylinders instead of the 4. this is good news i was thinking exhaust or turbo was starting toget worried, just shows how much i dont know, cheers for now lads.

.
If it turns out to be a coilpack you may be able to get some replaced free of charge if early versions. There was a VW coilpack issue which they acknowledged by inviting owners to have a free inspection and replacement if appropriate.
Use the Search on this forum for more info.
Lay off the beer if you are driving.

^^ As RR said, I had my coils changed last weekend at VW for free as my model GTI (06) had a 'service issue' so try calling VW before parting with any cash monies... Hope you get it sorted fella

Cheers ill phone vw in the morning mines a 56 so hopefully could be that and it'll be done FOC. and RR i dont drink drive, thanks.

....A 56-plate is quite likely to qualify - VW will inspect all of your coilpacks. You asked earlier what a coilpack does (your engine has 4): It transforms power from the battery to provide an electric spark in your plugs and the rest is all about the internal combustion engine.
On the drink reference, I said what I did only because of this:
i was driving to the pub for my usual friday night beer,

they wouldnt of mislodged a spark plug. Theyd have to remove the coil first. remove the engine cover and youll see four squarish things pull each one out and push back firmly. sounds like youre definately running on three not four. sometimes these things are coinsedence. mine went when leaving the carpark and it was fine before. as mentioned phone vw saturday qoute your year or plate amd theyll tell you if your entitled to the free coil pack change.
-
yeah phone vw, still thinking of how much of a coincidence it is you had your car worked on today,
coil could just go of course but I would be sceptical
I guess it cant be a blown exhaust as it would have been picked up on the mot so rull that one out
must be the coil I think
good luck buddy

I had a coil go 3 times on my mk4 golf v5 - never went bang and emission light flashed - didn't stay on constantly? Could defo tell wasn't running on all cylinders, power was was down - felt lumpy - could tell it was missing every time. Just seems strange had it on 3 occasions and never heard a bang.
Do just go instantly though - as said previously I parked up all was good returned 10 mins later and one had gone.
If it is that though its a £20 part and 10 mins work so fingers crossed for u mate.

Hi, Just a quick update update on my car, those of you who said it was an ignition coil........ give yourselves a pat on the back :congrats: phoned SKF oldham this morning and dropped the car off and asked if i could have it done today which she couldnt promise as they were fully booked and they finish at 12 saturdays but she would try her hardest for me. anyway they managed to fit me in replaced the coil packs which solved the missfiring issue. they also gave it a free health check and cleaned it. Great service from the dealer i am very happy. so thank you too everybody that gave advice, great help from a top draw forum. :notworthy:
Cheers

That's good news, Dean :happy2:
How many of the coilpacks did they replace and were they all out of date re the free replacement?
-
Good news. As above was it covered under warranty?

@ Dean:
"I love my GTi more than my girlfriend" < Under your forum avatar - Hopefully your girlfriend doesn't read this forum!
I have to admit that I watched "Take Me Out" last night and when the guy said how much he loved his car (a Honda) lots of the girls hit their 'No Likey, No Lighty' button.
"I love my GTi as much as my girlfriend" might get you into less trouble and actually, as it will already be so very obvious to her how much you love your car she will think you love her lots = Win Win!

Hi, they replaced all 4 free of charge. she has seen the comment about about the girlfriend and GTi and all she has too say about it is that i need too change it too wife as we got married last month :jumping: she's crackers...
