Title: Offside mirror lowering when in reverse...
Post by: Veee-dubber on November 03, 2012, 12:51:17 pm
Excuse the shoddy title I'm not sure how to word this exactly lol...

Anyway, Rolling in my friends e46 beemer tuther day I notice that when you engage the reverse gear the offside mirror drops to show the curb to ease parking (which I'm pretty dangerous at lol)

Im pretty sure some of the higher spec mk5 golf's have this feature aswell, and im wondering if its at all possible to retrofit this to an earlier model?

Anyone actually following my drift here?

Cheers

 :happy2:

Depending on the car, you need door controllers + mechanisms + coding. Worked out v expensive but worth speaking to eddie-nl

An alternative (and in all likelyhood cheaper) if you don't have the necessary hardware already installed and if you have a highline display is to install a polar fis+ advanced. That will give you that function as well as many others.

that function is merily only good for reversing into a parking bay if ure reversing down a street its impossible to use that mirror and then becomes annoying

From the disclaimer (below) from them all sounds very hit and miss to me, better to buy the bits you want to do it properly, seen a few sets up for sale over the years for under 375 quid so hardly that expensive

NOTE: Due to construction features of vehicles it cannot be guaranteed that mirror position will be "perfect". On models equipped with this function from factory the mirror incorporate a position sensor, which does not happen with those without park assist mirrors, so the mirror will function in the same way, but can not be guaranteed to position "millimeter perfect".

Not actually true as it only dips when the mirror switch is in the left hand position and in reverse. If it’s in reverse and the mirror switch is in any other position the mirror wont dip.  You can also adjust the mirror to a different position and it memorises it when in reverse and L are selected. No reverse selected and normal adjustment of the mirror is restored. Mirror will also return to the normal position when travelling forward and moving over 5mph? Hope that all makes sense.

I love this feature. Has stopped my alloys from getting kerbed when parallel parking...shame I had kerbed them a few times already before I realised I had the feature

Surprising as your GTI looks like a high spec. I'm not sure which pack it was part of.

Thanks that would explain why it doesn't work.  My car is an '06 plate.

I think you mean 'nearside' mirror.  The offside is the driver's side ( on a Right Hand Drive car)

The mirror that dips when engaging reverse is the Nearside mirror for correct and safe parking on the left hand side of the road, preventing scraped alloys and flattening sleeping pussycats.

Apologies for sounding/ coming across like a school teacher!!
I mentioned the Near side, Offside thing today whilst walking with a friend and his dog. The poor hound appeared to have a sore paw and I said it was his 'offside rear'; my pal hadn't a clue what I was talking about! I think its a generational thing and when you did your driving test. I did mine in 1982.  Just had my 30th Anniversary!!!  My Dad received a Road Atlas from the AA for 50 year's membership.  A bl**dy Road Atlas!! And it wasn't written in Gold leaf or anything!

Yes the MY changes in July, for VW, so if your car was manufactured after July 2006 it will be classed as MY 2007. Just like my 56 plate.
