Going to nz for 6 months n want to get some good pictures. So what camera. Any help would be good

Canon G15 or G1x or G12 depending how they are priced when you come to buy.
Checkout Warehouse Express for some good prices and they also have a clearance section. :happy2:

I have been using for the Last year a Fuji-film Finepix S4000, its a bridge camera, so it has all the adjustable settings as a DSLR but a fix lense, the benefit of this is cost. I think they are around £200, Its a great camera and once you learn about the settings you can get some great shots.
Here's a few I have taken with it; Bear in mind when I bought it I knew absolutely nothing about photography.

Again if you have a £400 budget you could probably go out and spend more on a cannon or a Nikon but at least this way you save some money and more to spend while in NZ.

No idea if they're any good, but some of the Samsung cameras come with a free Galaxy Tab and cashback at the moment.

I've been there and done that regarding travelling and carrying around Nikon/Canon bodies plus 4 lenses etc and it's far more convenient and practical to have a pocket size compact digital. It will have some limitations so buy the best you can currently find.

However, it does depend what you like to photograph and a compact digital is useless for motorsport action for example.

got a nx1000 in the end with a 20-50 and 50-200 lens.

£519 for that kit in Jessops. You can claim a free Galaxy Tab tablet and £50 cashback, too. Sell the Tab for £100 on ebay, claim back the nifty and it's back within budget at £369...

I got a Pen Mini in the states and it was bout £300 with an SD card, spare battery and case. My photographer mate said invest in glass, not the camera. I'm assuming he means as long as the camera is half decent in terms of spec, the smart money should be spent on decent lenses!

I have recently purchased a Panasonic FZ150 which is a bridge camera with 24x zoom, but with the added benefit of a hot shoe (for better flash, microphone etc) still learning really but been experimenting with it a lot on and off tripod and managed to get some great pics so far...just need to figure out what I did to get them!

all depends how keen you're on photography!
Nothing quality wise can beat DSLR but then you end up with a kit weighing 10 kg to carry around. Also for some peeps there is no difference between shots taken by 100 quid compact and 3k DSLR. All depends if you have this gift and you're really into it.
I just bought a camera two weeks ago and ended up with advanced compact which for 99% of people will make the same quality pics as more expensive kit. I wanted something just for shooting, light to carry around, taking great pics, big zoom (mine has 20 x optical zoom) and shoot full HD movies. I am not disregarding the fact that more expensive kit will take better pictures. What I am saying here is that I am pretty sure I won;t be able to see the difference.
Read hundreds of reviews and ended with Sony Cybershot DSC-HX20V which replaced my 6 year Canon powershot. Really impressed how technology moved forward. This little compact can take 10 pics per sec and track any object quickly for sports pics. It wasn't possible with my old camera back in the days. Also optical zoom is impressive with 20 x and HD movie mode.
It costed 260 quid so you would be left with 140 for the car mods! :innocent:
Try those two sites and have a read about tests and comparisons.

....I can see the quality difference between shots taken with a DSLR and a digital compact but it also comes down to what you're happy to carry around with you and how you use your photography.
That dpreview web site is excellent if they review a camera which you are interested in :happy2:
