Title: MK5 HVAC/Climate Control expert needed!!
Post by: rich83 on November 04, 2012, 09:24:53 am
So, I have a problem with my blowers.

At first they work fine, air comes out of all the correct places. After an hour or so of driving, it seems like it goes into "lock down mode" and regardless of the climate settings... Only the equivalent of a weasels fart comes out.

I have replaced the climate panel..... to no avail.

I have performed a basic settings reset on the climate flap..... To no avail.

I'm struggling to think what the issue could be here. Anyone got an idea??

Thanks
Rich

Does it sound like the air flow is going elsewhere?

I had this a couple of times
Turned the vent on to clear the windscreen, maxed the airflow but no air coming out. But I could here the airflow under the dash. No faults showed up when scanned

It sorted itself out the next time I went out in the car. So I think it is some flap that got stuck

Well the fan can be heard Eddie from under the passenger side dash.... but its like there is a main flap that after a while just thinks "f*ck it... im not going to open"  :signLOL:

If i went out to my car right now.. the fans and flaps would operate correctly.

Hopefully but no guarantee

it did sort itself out on my car, sounds like the same problem

I had a similar issue.
The recirculation flap motor was broken and for some reason was cutting off air to the cabin and only a little was coming out of the vents.
It's directly being the glove box.

Are the flap motors controlled via a stepper motor/solenoid? Could be on it's way out or poor/partial connection?

Does the HVAC show faults for things like that?

Is it easy to get to, and swap?

Just to note... there are no VCDS fault codes present. Ill check this again tomorrow!

I would have thought if it was the flap motor, it would bring up errors on VCDS. I know when I put my Mk6 panel in, I had issues and ended up having to replace the whole flap assembly. It was giving me errors on the flaps in VCDS.

If that is your problem, hopefully you don't need to replace the whole flap assembly as that is a dash out job and a lot of expletives will be uttered. :signLOL:

Well no errors in vcds mate..  :stupid:

Yeah, does sound like a possible flap issue though. If there are no errors, then I am not sure what it could be. You've done the compressor start stop process right? Another thing to try is try it without the flap motors connected and see if it does the same thing. You will need to take the glovebox out though.

Popping out now for a little while. Will start googling when I get back. You need info on the glovebox removal or?

I have a couple of links below, one is how to take the glove box off and the other shows the picture of the flap motors.

Glove box:
http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96856 (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96856)

Flap Motors:
http://vwnavi.com/volkswagen-factory-fit-navigation-systems/rns-510-mfd3-navi-system/9170-climatronic-screen-29.html (http://vwnavi.com/volkswagen-factory-fit-navigation-systems/rns-510-mfd3-navi-system/9170-climatronic-screen-29.html)

In the picture above, you can see the flap motor assembly, the newer one with one motor on the left and the older one with two motors on the right. You will most likely have the one with two motors. There are two blue plugs plugged into the motors, you can get to them with the glove box off. They will be to the right of the assembly. a bit tricky to remove the rear one, but it can be done. You can actually see the two blue plugs hanging in the 3rd picture down.

Hope this makes it clear, if not, let me know and I will see what else I can dig up.

Really really really really really really really really really really really really really  getting beefed off with this now.

Drive back from malvern last night car just steams up because there is no air coming out of the vents... not even the front de-mist... made for a very very very very miserable and hard journey.

Got back at 00:30 ad straight out with VCDS....

NO fault codes... so I perform a "Flap Basic Settings" and boom... instantly starts blowing air out of the vents.

I checked ran all the output tests and all perform fine.

WHAT THE DEUCE IS GOING ON????

LOL.

Ta damo. First thing is to remove the glove box and have a nosey around. But I think that's the part which is playing up :-)

Glovebox out...

Sat in car an hour with the blowers on to see if anything would stop working.... and surprise surprise... all worked perfectly!

Gonna keep the glove box off for the foreseeable, so i can find out what the hells going on.

Hello, Did you get this fixed ? I have had the same problem for about a year now.

It kicks in either after 2 hours driving - aircon goes limp and blows next to nothing, even when manually 'forced'. It's rubbish.  It'll be fine the next day.

OR, it comes on when the EML flashes on with a misfire on all four cylinders (After 30 minutes today) that doesn't exist (I'd ideally like to find that fault and fix it too !)

So far, I've dropped a lot of money on inspections with specialists and VW Dealers. No fault codes are recorded anywhere and they can't find any physical faults. It's been serviced, regassed, new filters, run for hours, you name it.... none of it finds any fault. But it doesn't work after a while. I drove the car today (it's my wife's) and it wouldn't even clear the mist caused by our breath off the windscreen..... and I know that tomorrow it will blow brilliantly.

Damned annoying. And the attitude of the dealers is the usual - no sir, no faults recorded, there's nothing wrong with it - the computer says so.... - so any guidance/solution you found would be fantastic.

Thank you.

Has anoyone got anymore info on this? My car started this last winter. Like everyone else it's only a problem after an hour or so of driving.

Nope... never got to the bottom of it. But, Ive stopped using my car for long journeys (change in work) so that most of my journeys are now sub 1 hr so I dont notice it these days.

I thought this sounded a bit crazy but it seems to have woked. Someone suggested closing the vent on top of the dash. I'm not sure what it actuallly does to help but I drove for over an hour yesterday and the issue seems to have vanished. It's a weird one :/

Top vent takes away all the air to the screen for whatever reason I don't know but once closed, all the air circulation is back to the main vents. Not sure if that's how it's meant to be as I've not rear the handbook yet lol but that's what I figured out after nearly 3 months driving it with less air on the vents.

Sorry yes I know what it does in relation to the air flow but I can't see how having it shut makes the fan work correctly. Last week after an hour of driving I had no air out of any vents. Now I close the top vent and everything works perfectly.haha

Maybe it's down to the flap motor but I can't be 100% on that sorry AliGTI
Flap motors are cheap on ebay under £20 used.

figured it out at last hahaha... when switched to the top vent, it allows full air to clear the screen doh  :stupid:
