Quick question on projector headlights...
If I have these, do I need certain bulbs? Just asking as I have normal bulbs in, and the light output is shocking. Need something better as am always driving in the dark now!

To answer your question, no, not specifically.
Your options are:
* Use the standard GTI reflector headlamps and upgrade the main beam and dipped beam to something like MTECs or Osram Nightbreakers, or Phillips Extremes. (Cost - £15/£30)
* Purchase Projector style non genuine headlamps (Hella etc) and use H7 standard sized bulbs as mentioned above. (Cost £150-£200 + Bulb costs)
* Spend more cash, and buy MK5 Xenons headlamps, they use a main beam which is H7 size, so MTEC/Osrams would fit, but the dipped beam is a DS2 Xenon HID bulb, which gives you the best light output. (Cost - Expect to pay £500 for a complete set of Xenons with ballasts, bulbs, ignitors and looms)
That's in ascending order or expense also.

fit a HID kit?

Hi osram night breakers are probably the best halogen bulb that you will ever fit to the mk5 with your projector headlights imo,but for optimum clarity and performance you wont get any better than oem xenon headlamps and upgraded to bi-xenon/full beam,as i have done, but be warned this is not a cheap retro fit,to do them properly you will need to fit self levelers/headlamp washers but what an improvement over standard awesome lights hope this helps

I currently have some cheap aftermarket projector headlights. I have the mtec light bulbs but they just don't produce enough light. Would it be down to the headlights?

I'd say yes, as as long as you have genuine MTEC the light is great from them. Cheapest solution, try the Osrams in there and if it's not improved you know 100% it's the headlamp.

I had both the gen mtec`s and osrams in mine before i went bi-xenon and to be perfectly honest the mtec`s are no where near the light of the osram night breakers imo the mtec`s only gave a brighter whiter light but sufferd for this on distance the spread was every where but on the road lol where as the night breakers lit the road up as far as you could see.

So nightbreakers are better than phillips xtreme vision plus in terms of lighting up the road in front of you?

I would say that Osrams give a much better light output, and for further.
-
I would definetely recommend the Philips xtreme vision. Made a massive difference for me!. They also came top in a magazine group test where they tested them in a specialist light tunnel in Germany.

Nightbreakers are excellent. A huge improvement over the factory fitted bulbs.
The Philips are also superb apparently, but I haven't tried them personally.
-
I would recommend fitting a HID kit. Always going to be brighter than Halogen no matter what the make is.
Obviously you need to ensure the headlights are adjusted correctly - but then you should be doing that even if you're using candles.

Timmi,i think from the small response you have had so far on your topic,i think you will agree and find through time that the biggest majority of other forumites would agree that osram night breakers are by far the best halogen bulb for the mk5 golf h7 dipped/full that you can buy,but as others will say it is your preference my own opinion is mtec`s for cosmetic pure white light effect ===== osrams for distance beam

Might have to buy all of these. I have HID's in my boot so might fit them before trying the osrams and phillips ones!
