??? You're polishing the clearcoat. This has no colour. The question is are you goin to polish by hand or machine?

Have you tried poorboys black hole polish? Really good at masking swirls on dark colours. Would use a wax/sealent over the top though, wont last longer than a week i find. I can recommend autoglym super resin polish, good filler as well, as its easily purchased at halfrauds. Autoglym also do a polish specificly for darker colours, not tried it although ive got a bottle somewhere. Would also recommend using a claybar before polishing, i have found without, the results are almost night and day and the polish bonds loads better.

^^^For an understanding of polishing and how it works. It talks about machine polishing but useful info nonetheless.

When you touch the car, you're not touching the blue paint. You're touching the lacquer or clearcoat on top of it. This is what you are polishing. It is clear. There would be no point using any "colour polish" and the only one I'm aware of is turtlewax.

Hence you can use blackhole, srp and uds by hand if you wanted to.

I use either AG SRP or meguires one (cent remember the name). It's the wax you use which can show off the colours better, I use meguires carnauba  wax and it brings out the flake in the paint well.

Others use purple haze on blue paint

Thanks Stealthwolf, but how do  I know If I have clear-coat lacquer on? How do I know i'm not on the two stage colour coat as the top layer?

So I need to use:

Claybar, then polish, then wax then sealant?

Because clearcoats have been used for years. It's de facto on most cars (>95% IIRC). The only ones that don't have it are pre-1980 and some colours like Vauxhall's reds which don't have clear coat.

Don't put sealant over wax, it's one or the other really.

But the guide says order is as follows:

Claybar
polish
Sealant
Wax

Says wax is final  step in process?

I'd do a bit of research on the differences between paint sealant and wax. In my eyes, rightly or wrongly, both are LSP products so both do pretty much the same job. Sealants are reportedly better suited to lighter coloured cars because they enhance the glossiness, whereas wax increases the depth in darker coloured cars. Application is also very difference. Sealants are liquid based so are very simple to apply, whereas wax is a paste and must be 'cured' for a period of time before removing. Wax generally has to be topped up every couple of months, whereas sealants can work for 6 - 8 months.

Cheers Andrew. So can I put sealant on my colour? (Laser Blue). Waxing sounds a bit tricky!

Sealants can be paste eg fk100p

Sealants and waxes are best applied directly to paint. If you use srp, it has some limited protection capabilities. Sealants are synthetic and have longer durability but I prefer the look of a wax on darker cars.

Yeah, for sure. I think wax would probably 'look' better, but if you're after more durable protection, and ease of application a sealant is probably for you.

Auto Finesse Tough Coat might be worth looking at.

I usually use AG SRP and then Jetseal 109 sealant. Although I also have a tin of colinite 915 which I bought a while ago but have not used it yet. Might put some on at some point in the next few weeks.

Thanks guys, I think I understand it now. How does this product list look?

rinse
wash – Meguiars  NXT Generation Car Wash - Already Got
rinse
clay – Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit Large - £22.95
rinse
polish – Poorboys Black Hole Polish - £19.95 (32oz)
sealant – Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 - £22 (16oz)
OR
Wax – Dodo Blue Velvet Pro - £47.95 (200ml)

I was thinking it would be a good idea to do it with the sealant before winter, to give me a good 6 months protection, and then in the spring, finish with the wax instead, to work on the colour, and do this every 2 months throughout summer. Then come winter, go with the sealant again. What do you think?

You don't need to polish so often. 2-3 times a year max IMO.

Wash regularly and then every so often eg a month, top up the lsp

You could also consider adding a de-tar product to remove tar. This would go before the claying stage.

The Blackhole isn't really a polish, it's a glaze. It has no cutting qualities. I tend to use it in conjunction with AG SRP, rather than instead of.

No point in adding black hole after srp.

No point in adding black hole after srp.

I was under the impression SRP had superior cutting abilities (removing light scratches) and black hole, as a glaze, had better filling qualities especially for black cars... One is a polish, one is glaze....

This thread suggests the two are incompatible. Can't say I've ever experienced the results they talk about, but it makes sense.

However, this thread suggests they can work in harmony:

As above, they similar yet differing products.

Black hole is a glaze with fillers. It will give a wet look and hide light swirls.

SRP is more of an all-in-one. To say it has superior cutting abilities is a bit like saying a butter knife will cut through steak. It's rather minimal and more of a filler but also a cleanser and has sealant properties I believe too.

You're better off with multiple goes with SRP rather than stick BH on top.

The trouble with detailing is that once the wash and decontamination is out the way it all comes down to personal preference, alot more than it does with the earlier process'. Some say its either wax or a sealant with some saying sealants lasting longer but waxes giving better results, some use both. Some just use polish, some use glaze, some people use both. Its all personal preference.

What I do is;
Wash, 2 bucket Method, I used to use AG Bodywoak Shampoo Conditioner (http://www.autoglym.com/enGB/product-proddetail.asp?Range=&v06VQ=K) but last time I needed I some I bought Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo (http://www.meguiars.co.uk/product/191/Gold-Class-Car-Wash-Shampoo-Conditioner/) which I prefer to AG's
Clay Bar with Meguiars Cly Kit (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_253057_langId_-1_categoryId_255233)
Polish with AG SRP  (http://www.autoglym.co.uk/enGB/product-proddetail.asp?v06VQ=HD)or Meguiars 3 stage system (http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/meguiars/deep-crystal-3-step-system.aspxl)
Wax, if I don't use meguiars 3 stage system I either use stage 3 of the set after the SRP or AG Aqua Wax (http://www.autoglym.co.uk/enGB/product-proddetail.asp?v06VQ=HJ)

I prefer the Meguires wax tbh as it gives a better finish but if I'm in a rush I use the aqua wax as its quicker (and smells good). Most people wouldn't probably rate much of what I use or how I do it but I don't really get the time or space to do it properly. Anything I've linked to above is just so you know the products I'm on about.

Heres a couple more guides and FAQ's etc that might help or confuse you more  :signLOL:

I've always been impressed with Megs Gold glass wash (when it's really dirty) or AG wash (when its only a little dirty) for keeping the shine throughout the year.

I clay with Megs, polish with AG SRP (really great stuff) and wax with Colinite 476S - that keeps the polish in and the water beading for 6 months minimum (and doesn't cost silly money)  :notworthy:

+1 for megs gold class.

I can recommend Dodo Blue velvet too (not the plus I didnt have the extra ££!)

Once clayed and waxed you will notice a big difference in how easy it is to clean the car in future.

Smooth as glass!

I'd recommend a quick detailer each time you wash. It will top up the protection the wax gives and provide a lovely glossy depth. I use Dodo Juice Red Mist Tropical on my black car and it is awesome - probably my favourite detailing product.
