Title: How to tell if dual mass is going
Post by: benjii on November 08, 2012, 09:19:53 pm
Hi every one just a quick question mechanic was doing repairs to my car today and said my clutch was fine but my dual mass looked a mess and only had a couple of months left. Now what are the symptoms of a dual mass going wouldn't the clutch go with it or symptoms when its gone as my car feels fine to everyone else and me . Just didn't trust the mechanic much as he seem to be trying to add stuff so wanting to know for myself

Well that good as I ain't got that yet all I can say is different is when driving sounds like tyre noise but that could be due to new tyres on front thanks for the help  :happy2:

Mine rumbles a bit if I set off with less than 1500rpm on the rev counter. Does anyone else have this?

Think mine is going too  :sad1:

The words "dual mass looked a mess" makes me assume the repairs involved removal of the gearbox and clutch?

A worn dual mass can cause vibration through the car or a rattle noise at idle.

I believe you will hear a grinding noise if you dip the clutch slightly during normal driving aswell...

I have just had both clutch and flywheel replaced as clutch was slipping. Was told that the clutch wasn't too bad but flywheel was just about dead as there was too much play I decided to replace the clutch as well while he was on. Been done a couple of weeks now and what a difference

The LUK dmf that's used on the Tfsi engine has more play/movement even when new compared to any other manufacture I've seen.
Lots of people are condemning perfectly alright dmf's because they either don't know how to check them or are not familiar with the product.
I originally thought mine was faulty on my 9000 mile car when I upgraded the clutch, I then purchased a brand new genuine dmf and surprise surprise the play/movement was exactly the same as my original.
I fitted the new one anyway but have kept my original as if I ever need it I would refit it.

2008 eddy stage 1 50k
£700
Clutch, DMF, bearing + labour = £700 (local vag specialist Durham)

I am sure a few more could chip in price wise

Can also check by listening on start up of the engine and when you turn it off! It will make a knocking/banging noise if worn!
