Title: Audi S6 DRLS on .:R32
Post by: Manu_R32 on June 21, 2009, 09:46:12 pm
So I have come back from Uni and managed to save up abit of money. What do you guys think of the Audi S6 DRL's on a TR .:R32?
I can use the money for this or maybe save up for something else?

Look forward to your opinions

Theres a place in Spain that will do it for me for about 350 euros. Including all parts and labour.

Jules86...carbon wrap for what? Got the carbon front splitter, rear diffuser, front and rear badges and trying to sort out something for the carbon grill too!

i am not a fan of the Audi DRL retrofits by any means, but i think the ones on those above R32s do look quite at home there!

Wont be going for red carbon, and doubt I would go for the carbon wrap either. I would prefer to have the proper carbon stuff from OSIR. All the other carbon bits i bought from them and i am very happy with the products and even happier that they are still on the car.

The intake i want for my car is the GruppeM one which costs about £800. Apart from that, I dont know any where around here that can bring it in for me.

Im still not too sure about the exhaust as I am happy with the stock one and dont wanna take the risk of resonated being too quiet and non resonated being too loud. All the other .:R32's around here belong to old people and they just keep the car standard i guess!

Not a great fan of these....

The first thing I did on my "chicken chaser", was to turn them off.

They tend to get the wrong attention from fast lane hoggers and road captains.

a bit to in your face for me, but if your boat is floating and all that  :innocent:

and if you want them to do this:

i have a control module new and unused that had fully adustable flash patterns as well as always on and off features etc, i know its a shameless plug but not many opportunities to find a buyer for it as i dont know anyone running these DRL's

....

In principle, LED DRL's give the perfect passive signal and in practice are a very sensible safety feature. I do find that more cars ahead of me in a lane will spot me and move over than when I didn't have them. Dipped headlights annoy more people because of their strength and sidelights are just ineffective.

Too many people in the UK are hung up about the style of LED DRL's rather than their functional advantages. And even more are set in their ways and prejudices about fogs. Just because a light is in the same position as a foglight doesn't make it a foglight - Duh!!

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FNurburgring2009%2FDRLs_PolizeiScirocco.jpg&hash=fd6461b128d05d5d49b684aeddbe26c4007c4c1d)

^ These are exactly the same Hella LED DRLs as mine. If I had a R32 I would definitely do this conversion to S6 DRL's.

VC, il have a play about with the DRL's once i get them and if i feel i can mess about with them abit i may be interested in the control module...wil PM you about it. And Red, thanks for that post, its abit annoying sometimes being held up behind a car as they havent noticed you....hopefully these will make a difference. Car is going in at 10am today and should get it back by the end of the day...will try and post up some pics once done!

Robin, in relation to your cool drl's, have you ever been stopped or questioned by a well meaning member of the local police force ?

They are often not the most informed on the latest of automotive technological trends.

....It doesn't guarantee that the car in front will move over for you but it does improve the target rate and especially on dual carriageways/motorways where your approach is faster and the LED DRL's have got their attention from a distance.

....*cough* I am known to the local police service *cough* and so no problems there. No problems with police further afield either and I was recently given an acknowledging thankyou wave when I did my party trick of quickly flashing on/off between my DRL's and heads - My DRL's automatically switch on/off when I switch on/off to any other lights.

I keep documentation about them and their EC legality in the car as back-up if I am ever stopped. Also, their actual lenses are moulded with the word "DRL" and TUV(?) markings. I'm totally happy to argue my case in court if necessary - In fact, I'd enjoy it!

I've had more trouble from pedestrians when I've been at traffic lights! Most just politely let me know I've got my lights on and are trying to be helpful, but I've had one guy who was obviously prejudiced and insisted they were fogs in spite of being told they were DRLs - I ended up telling him to lie down in the road in front of me and with any luck he'd remember reading the letters D R L when he woke up in hospital.

I investigated fitting the S6 DRLs to my GTI but it wouldn't have looked sufficiently oem unless I used GT style horizontal vents instead of the false honeycombe.

....Def suit the R32 better - Or any Golf which has the horizontally slatted 'fog' panels.

Personally, I don't like the styling mix of slatted with honeycombe on the same Golf.

I do like this treatment to include DRL LEDs though : -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Ftt74%2Fprepree1%2Fvw_golf_vi_gti_tuning_abt_3.jpg&hash=ac018b621dd1af2fb0b082929fb61878c9fa5894)

LEDs are without question the most effective and least blinding solution for DRLs. The UK is still dragging its heels over legislation :rolleye:

Indeed I have. Can get it changed to a switch control if it were the only way to solve this?

....What you are describing is the normal systems check process which is always initiated when switching on ignition. It's warning you that something isn't working and also decides something isn't working if it isn't present (my Recaro seat airbags for example).

One solution is to take VC's advice and switch the DRLs independently rather than interfere with the loom by using resistors (potentially expensive in the longer term).

However, with regard to EU legislation currently in process and already in place in some countries, I would advise that your DRLs are wired to automatically switch on with ignition and automatically off whenever any other light (including sides) are activated. This is designed to override the human error of forgetting to use our soon-to-be-compulsory (on all new cars) DRLs.

LEDs rock 'n rule! :happy2:
