Such numberplate surrounds are perfectly legal and don't let anyone else say otherwise. Nothing in legislation states you must have a plate surround not you shouldn't. Clearly though it must not block and views of the plate. I've got one on my golf and I also have LEGAL pressed plates. I have a whole document relating to legality of pressed plates in the correct circumstances if anyone wants it (off topic I know sorry). I can back all this up with fact and through my own work/experience.

MC71 - i'm gunna stick my private plate on which is 5 digits. I'm gunna stick a smoth front grill on and relocate the plate somewhere but can't find a place it isn't blocking an air intake!! Out of interest where's yours? (Sorry, off topic again I know :()

I have a "magnetic" plate and magnets on the reverse of the grill so it sits in the normal position. Pretty sure it's illegal anywhere else.

....I beg to differ. One is correct and the other is the incorrect spelling of Volkswagen's sacred birthplace.

You might as well spell VW as "Volkwagen" - It's incorrect.

[/quote]yeah I have just ordered a pair, query - awesome says free delivery with a small *
I ordered something yesterday and the delivery was free yet I just paid £3.99 for these plates to be delivered ?? and I can see no small print ???
weird
with regards to the front surround I was thinking if that was going to be easy or hard to get off, how are you getting on with yours ?
Title: Re: are these legal

(http://)^^^^ the grill only has 4 torx screws, T20 IIRC, very visible, 2 top and 2 bottom (look just under the plate surround for those) and it comes straight off. I remove the grill every time i clean the car to clean it properly. The plinth has 4 lugs, flip the grill over and press out the centre parts and the lugs will just pop out of the grill with no fuss.

The ebay "Wolfburg" surround is probably spelt wrongly as its a fake item, made in China.

Off topic (sorry) but had to post these while on the subject of spelling fails.........

Cheer, Martin

Nice. I don't have the guts to go down that route for fear of the thing flying off! Yeh your meant to mount it in the factory position/plinth under the type approval rules. Hey ho.

I guarantee that a plate that has magnets on it will never come off unless pulled off by someone. I use 16 20mm x 3mm N35 Neodymium magnets and the strength of those little puppies is simply incredible. Have a look at this "how to" thread on the mod........

I have all the bits for this mod so just need to find some time to sort it. And based on the strength of the magnets I have (same as MC71's), I cannot see the plate going anywhere of its own accord

@MC71, Have you used 16 magnets on the plate :surprised:

Yes, 8 on the plate and 8 on the rear of the grill. Not the best image below but you can see the magnets location on the reverse of the plate underneath the protective backing (just).......

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1049.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs399%2Fmcaborn%2F259893b8cb7ddd1972dbcb7915bb3004.jpg&hash=fcf2a712985b0498c89745dccaa403d6715a4f8f)

Overkill!  :fighting: :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:

Why?

How many have you used for your plate? I found 6 not enough as my personalised plate is pretty short and subsequently fairly rigid, the extra few help keep the curvature.

Ah ok thats makes sense. I understood it as 16 on the plate (Which would be overkill )

I plan to put 6-8 on the plate also :happy2:
