Hey folks
I hope to all things holy this is repairable and not a write off or I may actually cry !
Had a minor altercation with one of those huge Mitsubishi L200's , in a car park, he reversed out into me ! Even though it was raining and I had my lights on !

As far as I can tell , its the front wing panel and passenger door that's gonna need replacing !
Did some test before I drove home...Engine is fine , brakes fine, suspension fine.
Can turn the wheels all the way to the damaged side on full lock with no knocks, bangs , scrapes or rubbing. And then back to the opposite side with no noise either.
Drove home with no problems at all, which is a good 15 mile drive from where this happened.
Any thoughts ?
-
Hmm, inner wing and door post look suspect, the hinge has taken a hit there. Bad times.
-
hmmm, 04 plate car 140 bhp ( is that right ?) at least a couple of grand of damage there, wing and door as you say, looks like pillar also, wing mirror.
I don't know how much your car is worth but my wifes 03 plate mk4 1.6 16v golf with 50k on it is only worth £2k,,,, don't know repair cost but ins estimates are always ridiculous,,, prob come back with a bill for £3.5k or something.
check the value of your car online and send a pic to a repair garage maybe and ask roughly how much if you really want to know, they may give you a rough idea.
also if the ins company come back and say it is to much to repair I think you can possibly ask them for a break down of the est and also what they value your car at, if its close I think you can possibly make them use 2 other companies for a different quote, I also think you can specify a repair garage as they may just use somewhere stupid like vw for their quote which will be ridiculously high.
check it out dude and I hope you paid the £25 extra per annum on your car insurance for guaranteed car hire of which the guy who hit you would be responsible for, well his ins company anyway
hope this helps and good luck
-
Looks repairable enough to me. Door skin, mirror and wing are the only things that look damaged from pic. Insurance may write it off though.
-
she being picked up on Monday to be taken for what I can only assume is assessment and then hopefully repaired. Getting a hire car too through it all so that softens the blow.
If it does get written off...dear god I hope not....Might just go for a GTI lol

Hey folks...
Sad news today, been told my car is going to be a total loss..
I am so annoyed right now its untrue , especially when its not my fault ! Grrrr ! :fighting: :fighting: :fighting:

Nightmare, gutted for you mate
-
What a shame mate! Looks like he reversed into you at some speed! I know how bad it is to see out of the back of an L200 especially with the double cab on. Well look at it this way, maybe a gti's on the cards?
-
What annoys me the most is that I am 100% not at fault...It's the L200's fault for not checking properly when reversing. And now he's gonna get away with a couple of hundred quid repair for a bumper and what not and I loose my car !
I have no idea what value they are gonna give me for a settlement ! I bought my car for the best part of 5k, probably put about 2k's worth of repairs / upgrades into it. My insurance isnt even due till next March so I take it im gonna loose out on that side too.
I may move to a GTI next, but coming from having 2 golf diesels it would be very weird. Had the 1.9 mk4 TDI and the Mk5 2.0 TDI. The courtesy car I have at the moment is horrid...Its a MG , the model simply being "6", 4 door saloon , 1.8 petrol turbo.....It apparently has 160bhp but I call that a lie , the turbo lag is horrendous and sound awful too.
A little part of me is tempted by a DSG GTI as they tend to be quite common. However I'm now a little dubious on all petrols and never driven a automatic before.
-
If you want it repaired keep a hard line with the insurance and refuse to allow the car to be written off (I work in insurance and stuff like this pisses me off!) The insurance company will try and take the easiest option. Push them to repair it. They cant insist on writing it off - insurance is to get you back to where you were before and incident or accident. Writing the car off doesnt actually meet that process of insurance!
Your insurance policy, your car, you paid your policy - fix it. If the other drivers insurance is paying for it then definatley be blunt with them. I want my car repaired and i'm not willing to accept a write-off. Normally they will try and offer you a settlement instead - sometimes this is the best way to go, as you can buy 2nd hand genuine parts that fit correctly and have the parts fitted by someone independant??
Good luck!
-
sorry to hear the news, but things will work out  I know I've been there
what do you mean you will loose out on the insurance???

What I mean is I wont be getting the full year I paid for. Granted its about 2/3's of the way through my policy but I'm seeing as something I've pad for and not got.... ( Bit of a rage going inside my head )

Your insurance should be transferable to whatever new car you buy...
-
You are aware that you can remove any mods you did to the car if they weren't declared? If its at the salvage yard go down n remove all the things n return it to standard - as the specification per insured.

Thinking logically this is of course the right answer (Y) just feeling a little sore at the moment about it all !
-
question regarding the ins companies, when I am upgrading my car, rnh, mk6 camera etc should I be telling them, if I do will my policy increase ?
and if I don't tell them would I be allowed to remove these units if car is written off ?
-
You need to declare all modifications, no matter how small. I've even see insurers ask for details of stickers/decals on your car...
-
honestly, so when I declare things does my policy increase every time,,,,,,
so I put a shark fin on, I need to tell them ???
-

It depends who you are insured with as to whether the cost goes up. Most of them charge an admin fee and most put the cost up to if it is a BHP increase. You will be alright because you will be declaring all yours together.
-

Depends on who your insured with, most mod friendly don't put anything on the excess for cosmetic mods, only power mods increase the premium
-
and if I don't declarre these parts I don't get them back if written off ? is that right
-
and if I don't declarre these parts I don't get them back if written off ? is that right
Not only that your insurance could become void due to not declaring mods, leaving you to bear any costs involved. Also if it is repairable they will not repair anythin that hasn't been declared or again refuse or void the policy
-
Well it could be more serious - if you don't declare modifications your policy is effectively void. Not getting them back could be the least of your problems...
-
bugger, will inform them, thanks guys
:happy2:
-
query though, most mods I have 510 h ,new Monza 2s, prob mfsw, are all factory options for the mk5, didn't come with the car, in fact the original wheels where 17s but the ins company aint gonna know this are they.
other mods like mk6 camera, Bluetooth, hands free etc fair enough.
whilst I am thinking about it, they aint gonna know but at the same time it wont matter I guess, they will only value on book price anyway I guess, and if I don't declare them then they would not for example let me take the 510 out and put back in the crapy 300.
even if I declare all mods will they let you remove them if the car is written off ?
vw for example quoted me over three grand for a new 510h, oem Bluetooth, hands free, shark fin and mk6 reverse cam,,, I paid £1500 all in for supply and fit elsewhere but is there any way of protecting what you put in with regards to value or the option to get these parts back ?
-
Optional extras need to be declared too.
I'd look at it as covering your own arse. If the worst happens and you write your car off, and a savvy assessor informs the insurance company that there were non-standard items on them car, whether OEM or not, the insurance company will have the perfect excuse not to pay a settlement, and they always look for an excuse!
This isn't about whether they'd let you remove your modifications in the event of a write off, it's whether they'll pay out at all. What if you write off a £250k supercar, or heaven forbid, fatally injure someone. Losing a £14k car could be the least of your problems.
-
As Andrew said, basically if it didn't come off the production line with it fitted then it needs to be declared.
With audio it's slightly different, most insurers will need it declaring but will only cover between £500 - £1000 depending on the policy regardless to the actual cost
-
Correct. Anything that wasn't std fitment at time of production is classed as a modification. Unless you have proof that it was a dealer fit option at time of origination.
Do what I do - save up, buy all the parts fit them all at the same time - call the insurance & add everything at the same time. One admin fee!!
I've declared everything on every car. And yes it may cost a little more, but its better than having your insurance declared void and unable to get insurance anywhere else!! (Remember they ask you when you go through a new quote if you have ever had insurance cancelled by an insurer? That's the type of thing that can mess up your insurance for years)
Insurance companies actually check owners club sites & they have your number plate on the policy. They know more than you think.
-
cool, cheers guys, will declare shortly
-
Holy mother of.....
Not that I mind all the free talk, I really should turn off the email notification thing !
-
yeah dude, my fault, got carried away with the ins question
I came on the sight yesterday and had 23 diff notifications lol,,,, messaged back and forward all night, before I knew it 6 hours had passed
these sites are great though and you learn a lot
:happy2:
-
I welcome all the free talk so its all good :)
Still feeling a bit sore about the loss of my motor, after doing a few calls around the place it would cost me more than what the body shop say to repair if I was to do it myself.
Looks like im gonna need to fight for a high settlement from the insurance company to give me a fighting chance of getting back on the road ASAP !
-
feel really sore for you mate, especially when you done nothing wrong
as our cars get older we all know in the back of our minds that this may happen esp with a lot of expensive mods, was the reason I tried to get one of the latest mk5 gti's so to try and get some joy from it for a few years
-
I think im gonna look at a GTI next, need to test drive a DSG as i've heard good things in that department.
My only requirements are 5 doors and leather , not fussy on anything else, I would love stuff like xenon's and highline. But they are not essential. Colour doesnt bother me either ! Apart from white...(sorry all candy white lovers )

'04 GT TDI 140 | Remapped | Cold Air Intake | WALK = = Gone but not forgotten.
:congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
may it rip :sad1:
yeah test the dsg, I did but was undecided, drove a sweet one then a not so sweet gear change one and it threw doubts in my head, thought I would miss the gear stick but now I have a manual I would take either one next time

Hey folks,
Been having some rather serious talks with lots of people about what to do with my car after the stuff with the L200
My insurance company have got back to me.
The market value of my car is apparently £4020....
If I wish to keep the car "as is" and then do whatever I like with it...
Market Value £4020.00
Less Excess £600.00
Less salvage Value £522.60
Settlement figure £2897.40
In addition I would be able to claim my excess back as its a "non fault" claim.
So a grand total of £3497.40 and keeping the car.
If I want to "write off" the car it would be as follows.
Market Value £4020.00
Less Excess £600.00
Settlement figure £3420.00
The of course if excess is recoverable due to "non fault" I would get that back
So grand total £4020 with the car going to the great car heaven in the sky.
They have also suggest that I can find alternatives in regards to having it repaired under them and they pay the bill...but they suggested this would need to be in the region of £3000 in total.
Going forward I am going to investigate other body shops in my area as the one who the insurance sent it too are know for being a bit greedy ! Plus I don't entirely agree with there market evaluation.
Any thoughts or suggestions folks ? Can I rename my car the comeback queen / phoenix :P
-
I guess the real question is can you replace your car for £4k?
-
some one crashed in to me on a round about few months ago and i got rid of the car and got the gti best thing i done :)
-

Every cloud has a silver lining... but a GTI is going to be a completely different proposition financially....
-
have they actually told you what the repair est is ?
maybe it is not that much over the 3k ?
maybe it is way over ?
hard to decide what to do, do you want a gti over your old car ?
do you wanna throw another few grand towards your payout for a decent one ?
I know some people have refused the ins payout est and fought and won a bigger amount but it isn't to say that may work on every occasion.
I think there is a few guys on here who have worked for ins companies, maybe they will be able to advise
keep us posted dude
-
not being funny or anything, but how hard could it possibly be to get a decent 2nd hand Mk5 wing and door, and spray them? i honestly doubt it's £3k worth of work! even with new parts, surely it can't be that much?

I have requested the "engineers" report for a real breakdown of what needs doing and the cost they say it is....
I'll use this to call around other body shops and see what they say! I'm much in the opinion that the cost they have said so far is over the top.
Ideal world I'm looking for either repaired under insurance or a decent settlement payment !
4k is not enough to get back on the road in anything decent.
From what I've seen , mk5 GTI , 5 doors with leather seem to start around the 6-8k.
I'll try to keep you all updated ! But feel free to ignore if you wish !
-
Hi john, i would have thought you would have been able to get it repaired for a lot less than what you have been quoted. Dont quote me on this but i heard a rumour that places put their prices up if its an insurance job. Personally if mine had that sort of damage i would be looking at buying back and getting it repaired. :happy2:
-
It's wrong that they charge so much for jobs like this. A friend just had a lad crash into the back of her mini; needed a new bumper, cluster and a number plate surround.... final bill was just under £2k!
I'd definitely be doing as your doing, get the report back and get some quotes in; bet you could half that cost.
-
exactly as the guys are saying, get that report and also tell them you would like to challenge the payout amount, have seen a lot of people do this successfully, I done it last week on a laptop lol and got an extra 25% from ins company,
worth a try and doesn't actually mean you will accept it but just in case you need it you could get the ball rolling.
£3k does sound excessive though, I bet the company that quoted the work have added bits on as well that prob don't need changed, they always do this as the more parts there are the better due to their mark up on each item.
if you can get 2 independent quotes you may be able to crack this
keep us informed dude and yes we do like reading your progress, you are one of us after all
:happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
-
Oh my good god !
Just got the engineers report back with costings...all I can say is boy do they try and rob you blind !
From a cursory glance I have worked out nearly £900 worth of stuff that doesn't need doing ! and there is probably more as well.
I have edited a word doc that contains the report and removed all personal / business info about me and the body shop and if anyone wants a gander Ill put the link to the file on here too !
It really does make you sick at what they think they can get away with !
But anyway , heres the link if anyone fancies a read !
https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B862QeH0et38ektoam9nMlNYenc
-
phew, had a read of it, looks way to confusing in my eyes, and it says it is a BRIEF summary !!!
wouldn't like to try and understand the full one.
I bet they do it this way so the ins company haven't got a clue and just say ok we wont argue with your findings
maybe some other people on here will understand it but bl@@dy hell
-
So another update !
After many many talks with my insurance company and 4 different authorised garages !
The work on my car is gonna go ahead ! She lives again !
In such a good mood this afternoon :)

brilliant news, really good, your persistence has paid off, give yourself a big pat on the back mate.
when adding any extra value to your car in the future after this remember what the ins company values it at it todays market, good to keep in mind
let us know when you get it back dude :happy2:
-
Its due back sometime next week !
Not gonna bug them now just gonna let them get it done !
I'm thinking I may have to treat myself to a mod or 2 ! Suggestions ? :P
