Hi guys,
After 3 very happy years of ownership, it looks like I'll be selling my Candy White baby for a diesel due to increased mileage with work. What have people moved onto in here, once they've let go of their GTI?
Any suggestions? I'm going to have a budget of around €14-15k (£11-12k), and will need something with a bit of power. I think the absolute lowest I could go is 140bhp.
I had been considering the following:
- BMW 320cd SE (2008) (at a stretch in budget)
- BMW 320d M-Sport (2008)
- MK6 2.0 TDi (2010)
- A4 2.0 TDi 140hp (2008)
- A3 2.0 TDi 170hp S-Line (2008)

After my lovely graphite blue mk5 GTI I got an Octavia vRS wagon to give me the space I needed for kiddie clobber.
I love it more than the golf - it does everything the gti did, but also has lots of space and was much cheaper, plus it's a bit more subtle than a gti.
Oh, and it's still a petrol btw and I'm doing 30k miles a year in it. I hate diesels.

Just out of interest, selling a car you love, to buy one that you wont, for circa £5k more?
£5k buys a lot of fuel for work. And your Gti is a lot closer to the bottom of its depreciation curca than a £12k vehicle.
Just something to think about ;)
I went from an Ed30 to a 182 Trophy by the way, didnt regret it one bit - the latter is a far better track car :P

I was in a similar situation to you ~2 months ago.. considering diesel for economy & larger car for space (kids). I had a deposit down on an A4 S-Line (2008) but got cold feet and pulled out of the deal. I have no regrets in keeping the GTI (apart from losing the small deposit). As above the GTI won't depreciate much more and should be a better drive than all the cars on your list.
I tried a 3-Series MSport but wasn't impressed, the A4 was better IMO.

Oh I'm sure plenty have had the same issue! ;)
Drove 400 kms today with work. That's allows a LOT of time to think about things!
Valid point made about paying out over 5k for what would technically be a downgrade. Plus the car isn't chronic on juice anyway. I'm on course to get 700kms out of this tank alone! :surprised: If omly they were all like that!
Something that came into my head today was "Right.....keep it for at least another year......get the body work done (needs a few dents fixed on the left side).....get the Detriots refurbished......get some new mats.....and an interior/exterior wash/wax".
I think if I got the above done, albeit expensive, would make the car feel like new to me again!

I bought a 2k Bora oil burner and kept the S3

As in used the Bora for work and the S3 for everything else?
-
I traded my Gti for an EP3 05 Civic Type R and I regret it enough that I've went far enough to convince my self in to getting a mk6 Golf Gti.

Yep :happy2:
The problem for me is, in this d1ckhead country that is Ireland.......tax on a 10 year old 1.9tdi is no less than €626 (£500) annually! Crazy sh1t! Add that to my already €660 GTI, and you're talking silly money altogether!
That would almost offset any savings I make by doing my work miles with an old diesel. I'd love to go the route you have gone, but I don't think I'll be able to due to the above.

Mk6 GTD?? Not sure if they're too pricey...
