Hi chaps... we are after a new TV as our 6/7year old 32" LCD 720P is on its way out!
So... is it best at 42" to go plasma or LED?
Initially I am thinking Panasonic again but what other brands should I either consider or avoid?
Spec needs to be:-
42"
Freeview HD
1080P (not fussed about 3D)
3 HDMI
Maybe some sort of PVR with the addition of a USB harddrive
Doesn't need to be internet ready as I have a apple TV and PS3 for all that.
Any advice welcome. :happy2:

if you aren't fussed about 3D then it has to be a backlit LED.

Panasonic plasma. FIN!

+1. Also the LED will be slimmer etc.
-
Used to have plasma years ago, upgraded to LCD and now have LED. Honestly picture quality amazing compare to Plasma and LCD.
-
Led over plasma IMO, I've got a thing for the Samsung smart led tv's mainly the series 7 & 8's
-
See i was chatting to my dad about Plasma vs LCD and I thought that Plasma was the last word, but he seems to think that the LEDs are much clearer... and thiner as mentioned above.
-
You sure you don't want mine Rich? Top of the range Panasonic 42" 3D. Good Price. :signLOL:

The Samsung LED's were LED backlit not actual LED screens.

TX-P42VT30B :happy2: all specs on web. You should come and see it after the Thu meet, even if to give you a more informed opinion.
-
Depends on budget, but plasma gives much deeper blacks. LED looks better under shop lighting as it looks brighter and sharper, but watch a bluray at home and the blacks look grey and you lose definition between dark objects, often referred to as 'blocking'
Find your local richer sounds and ask for a demo of both in their demo room, watch a few mins of different media (DVD, tv, blurry etc...) and then make your mind up which you prefer.
Personally I still love my 3 year old Panasonic plasma, not a good looking tv compared to modern stuff, thick body and wide frame, but far more realistic picture.

Blocking is due to the quality of the signal into the screen not the actual screen.

You could have my old 42" Plasma that sits in my spare room. Bring a friend if you want to move it.

Another vote for the Samsung LED. The picture on my 55" 7 series is great. On top of that, it's also a really good looking TV. The latest ones even have hand gesture remote control. How cool is that??

Just be careful when watching porn - may change channel when viewing :signLOL:

Wahahahahahahahaha. Excellent. :congrats:

No fussed about things like that... im sure it wont work 100% reliably!

Blocking is due to the quality of the signal into the screen not the actual screen.
I have 2 virgin HD boxes at home, same signal quality and cables to both. One is linked to a 55" Panasonic Viera plasma, no blocking or greyscale issues. The other linked to a Toshiba LED and it suffers from blocking quite badly and can't control accurate greyscale reproduction so that any dark objects i.e a man in a black suit standing in front of a black car looks like the suit and the dark background is one large black patch.
I have also come across the term blocking used for signal issues when the screen goes 'blocky' like large pixels.
I was invited into richer sounds recently to view their flagship offerings of LED screens, although a massive amount better than the earlier LED offering from Samsung and LG that suffered from screen clouding, it still wasn't as pleasurable to watch as a top spec plasma.

Judging by the look of the remote.. that was purchased sometime about about my birth!

I'm going through the same TV buying quandary at the moment too Rich. Ironically, working in the TV & Film business I still have my old steam driven CRT Panasonic which has stood the test of time these past 12 years and doesn't appear to be failing in any way! HD Smart Tv's are fast becoming the must have TV's of today and I feel I'm missing something when I actually sit down to watch the dross that I've probably worked on.
Technically, the proper back lit LED screen's are the cutting edge right now although I've seen some newer Plasma's that are much richer and more film-like than the LCD/LED sets but very soon the OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens will be within reach, probably first from Samsung, Sony and LG followed by Panasonic et al. We use an Sony OLED as a monitor and I'm very impressed with it at 7 inches but will reserve judgement until we see the larger sizes. If I'm being totally honest, most of my movie watching is at the cinema and my small living room won't allow a big set. A friend has a good JVC projector set up and providing its dark, a beer in hand, his projector driven home cinema is the finest I've seen outside Leicester Square! Not everyone has the space for such a piece of kit so my advice is similar to PDT''s; definitely demo some equipment at a Richer Sounds or Graham's HiFi and remember the PC World/ Curry's outlets staff generally have absolutely no clue about anything, nor is the layout of the TV's in long rows going to help you pick a good 'un. You needs to be at least 2m from a 40 inch set;more for a 50 incher. I'll wager you'll not find anywhere with that optimum distance.
Let me know how you get on
PR

Thanks Paul, i will let you know :happy2:

I think 42" is the biggest that will go in my gap....
-
I wouldn't touch anything other than a plasma for my main viewing pleasures.
To be honest I have a Pioneer plasma which is untouchable in terms of quality and picture, ask any tv expert worth their salt!!
Unfortunately Pioneer stopped making plasma's due to pricing (they couldn't be competitive) with the likes of $hitty LG and Samsung - not enough enthusiasts with enough money for their brand.
The Pioneer Kuro is by far the best tv ever made................end of!!
Going forward I will just have to bite the bullet and go the next best thing - Panasonic!! :sad1:

Have you measured it?

Pioneer kuro - still the benchmark that most tv's are compared against in tests.
Still sell for top prices 2nd hand.
-
Panasonic plasma. FIN!
LOL That is what I have. Mainly as I wanted better 3D :happy2:
-
I understand the Pioneer Kuro engineers are now at Panasonic.....2 friends have Pioneer Kuro Plasma sets and they are the dogs danglies for sure!

Thats what i have to play with. So gonna pull the unit out 8" and put the sub behind it.
Ideally i would like it up on the chimney breast, but it would be a lot of work!

I'd second that :happy2:
We have a 50" Pioneer Kuro Plasma, a few 42" Panasonic Viera Plasma's and a 50" Samsung Plasma and I'd rate them in that order
The Pioneer is something else!

So we are saying that Panny Plasma is a good choice then?

No Rich do your research, ask all the questions, make your mind up and then buy the cheapest.

Agreed ^^
Check out the comprehensive reviews over on AVForums. They gave one of the 2012 VT50 Panny's reference status which hasn't been given since the Pioneer Kuro days (in its class).

ok here goes,
I used to work for samsung for sales training and marketing and this is what I remember.
LED's use less power then plasmas
Lighter
No screenburn issues like plasmas
Better picture colours
Smoother motions (100hz as opposed to plasma 600hz sub motion)
Samsung used to make 42" screens but faced many problems as did Sony. It was something to do with the placement of each pixel on the panel so they scrapped the idea and just stuck to 40" screens
Ive had 2 samsungs
UE40C6000 and the UE40D6530. These were the 2 best selling models in the previous 2 years.
Im looking to get another one for my living room. UE40ES5520. at john lewis its 449.00 with 5 year guarantee.
Also dont be confused by the CMR number Samsung advertise. Just remember if youre looking for a tv with 100hz in the samsungs, its going to be a 6,7 or 8 series.
I have 3D but never use it.
Also found that samsung tvs play all major formats. I remember a customer once returned a panasonic as it didnt plat mp4's and buy a samsung.
also dont go for a EH model ( EH5000, EH5300) these have a larger rear end like an LCD except it has an LED backlit. it kinda defeats the point of having an LED tv. apprently the speaker is better in them.
Stick to the ES models.
:happy2:
PS: hope i havent offended any plasma fans. Just my 2 pence.

My 2p worth!
I had a 42" Panasonic plasma which was ace except-
There was a high pitched noise that came from the set during viewing!
Got a replacement and it was exactly the same. Ended up getting
A full refund.
Went and bought a 42" LG plasma and just after a year of ownership
I have started getting a kind of red pixeling in the whites. LG are not
Interested because it is out of warranty.
Trying to blag my dads pioneer......
-
Samsung make plasma TVs, too...
but they like to push more on their LED's.
I still think Panasonic make better plasmas then Samsung.
Guess it comes down what you're after.
I would get a Panasonic plasma over a Samsung plasma.
But Samsung LED over Panasonic LED.
Dont know whats happening with Sony as ive been out of that job since march this year, but i do know they were struggling for a while.
-
Trying to blag my dads pioneer......
I believe panasonic and pioneer have some sort of partnership ;)

My mum bought a passive 3D LG and it went pop one day later. Got a Panny GT50 now. Picture is brill on it, but I am massively underwhelmed with the 3D bit. It all works fine, but I can't really see the point, plus it's like wearing heavy sunglasses indoors with the picture darkening accordingly.

passive 3d always gave me a headache. Active shutter is where 3D really suits the home. You will find the development of active 3d glasses are improving each year in terms of size and comfort.

thats a good topic, The only difference ive seen in HDMI cables is when a Sony rep couldnt use 3D as he was using a version 1.3 hdmi.
These are what i use.

I use the v1.4 ones from B&M Home Stores. They're the most expensive ones they sell at a massive £4.99,

It looks a lot nicer, but I doubt the picture is a great deal better. What's the difference in price?

The ST is £699 from richer sounds.
The GT is about £900-£1000
-
TX-P42VT30B :happy2: all specs on web. You should come and see it after the Thu meet, even if to give you a more informed opinion.
VT30B=AMAZING Rich :party:
Do it...they are Stunning. Always been out of my price range but Stunning  :notworthy:

ST, GT, VT... Is there much difference?
I'm I right in saying that GT and VT use the same panel?

I went with the a sony led in the end. Had samsung before and wasnt really impressed.

Well... Richersounds watford are a bunch of useless knobs... the stupid
cow lady on the phone was more bothered about the customer in the shop who was buying a 75" TV... needless to say.. they are not getting my money!

Hmmm... :happy2:

When I was looking for mine I scoured the interwebs and eventually settled on my local Panasonic stockist.
They were the cheapest and it also meant that I got a free 5 year warranty. :pomppomp:
Try John Lewis.
-
Ta Ian... will do. Gonna try currys too just to 'view' them.
-
Ta Ian... will do. Gonna try currys too just to 'view' them.
You can't go to currys and not play the "ask staff difficult tech questions" game.
Always good for a laugh, though my wife doesn't normally see it that way!
-
Rich I have a Panasonic Viera TX-P42G20 (plasma) which is a slightly older version. The picture is stunning, the tv has been faultless for the 24 months or so that I've had it.
It has USB recording, which is a great facility, I can record in either Freeview HD or Freesat HD or normal SD quality on to a hard disk and the quality of the stuff when you watch is is as good as live. The only downside is that you have to watch the channel your recording or 'tape' two channels at once, because it doesn't have twin tuners. Nevertheless, with this model I can switch between the freeview & freesat facility and watch other stuff
Panasonic plasma gets my vote & money, got mine from John Lewis with a 5 year guarantee, but have a look at these guys http://www.soundandvision.co.uk
-
So.. back from currys. Looked at the Panny P50ST50B and the L47DT50B
LED is more vibrant, Plasma seems more neutral. Apart from that and the physical design I cant tell much difference.
-
I wouldn't even contemplate based on seeing 2 TV's in somewhere such as Curry's.
Settings turned up to max in a brightly lit environment. THe best you can hope for is that it's fed with a blu-ray and not it's own Freeview via communal aerial.
Come round and have a look at mine next week as I'm off Rich and then make a decision. :happy2:
-
I've got the G20 like Eccie and for the money it's amazing. :notworthy:
I agree with hedge 100% about currys
plus they will try to sell you what they want rather than what you want. IMHO
(Dom's VT will be something else all together though )
-
My local Currys store doesnt carry the high end Panasonic plasmas any more, as they seem to be much keener to push the latest consumer want, the "LED TV". Only LED backlit I'd consider would be a full array one like Philips make, not one of these fancy thin edge lit jobbies that look good, but all have patchy pictures. The technology is getting better, but probably won't be fully there before OLED is with us (and more affordable hopefully). There's a big barney going on in that arena, too, with Samsung and LG both suing each other over the tech, just like Apple, Samsung, HTC etc in the mobile phone/tablet world!
If you can get to a proper Panasonic dealer with a full range in stock, you'll see where the extra money goes and it's mostly on the chassis. The GT and VT ranges are lovely to behold, whereas the ST looks rather more plasticky. The VT is stupendously thin for a plasma, but the price is wince-inducing.
edit: just recalled that the VT doesn't come in 42" flavour anymore, so even if it was more affordable it won't fit...
-
Samsung LED :happy2:

Bloody hell.. i wish i hadn't asked... :signLOL:

Local Costco is a good place to just view all the panels. Watford?
5 year Costco guarantee when you buy from them as well.

Can you go into a costco and browse without a card?

At my one you need to show your card on the way in but if you know someone with a card they can take 2non members ins with them

The average tv buyer in comet/currys or equivalent just want LED because its usually one or many of the following:
What their friend has.
It's thin.
It's super bright.
Clueless shop assistant told them led is the best.
Cheaper than plasma

Laura liked the LED also probably because the image is more "poppy"
The cost of the plasma and LED were about the same for the TVs we were looking at.
-
In the shop they do look good, under bright lights they do really stand out. At home watching a film with dim lighting you will find that on some sets (have seen this on loads of Samsung 7 series led) especially edge lit sets, there will be uneven backlighting.
Type 'Samsung clouding' into google

... about 250 quid. :signLOL:

My guess is the 30 is an older model.

I think 30 is 2011 and 50 is 2012
Gonna have to ask SWMBO how much money we can spend

The offer is still there if you want to come and see mine next week. I'm here all week.
-
Remind me what model it is please?
Ill see what there is at the panny centre, then let you know. Thanks :notworthy:

It's a TX46G15B. 3 years old I believe but the same panel as the newer ones and set up proper.

The 42" GT50 is superb! Cheapest the panasonic shop could do was £975 + the 2 free 3d glasses deal.
-
What signal sources was it fed Rich?
If it were me I would like to see it with a variety e.g. HDMI DVD and Blu-Ray, RGB Scart, Freeview, SD channels over HDMI, etc.
-
TV feed and blu ray. The bluray casino royal (Which is good cos I've got that on BD) looked fantastic.
I don't use scart. The normal tv feed looked good, much better than the led.
-
Reply good blacks. Overal contrast was probably a tad high but that can be adjusted. Colours were good and the screen is not ultra reflective like a lot of plasmas
-
975 is a good price. Been looking at the 50" version which is around 1100.
-
Cool. When's it getting delivered? :innocent:
-

My 42 would go across the back seat of my old Octavia in it's box.
Don't lay it flat and make sure you put it's seat belt on.
-
Stupid question: Why should you not lay it flat?

Stupid question: Why should you not lay it flat?
Flexing, might break the glass.

I like the Samsung smart hub TVs, costco have them on a good price at the moment with 5yr guarantee as well.
Panasonic Vieras you need to watch as some models over 40" have issues when you hook up stb's with them. Not all just some.
-
Not been hooked up to anything except ps3 and Apple TV. Hopefully get it friday :jumping:
-
Awesome Purchase :congrats: :congrats: :congrats:
Does it come with the free 5yr guarantee Rich?

Nice, congrats mate! I've got a Sony that has an iPhone app remote and I agree, it's the biz.

Seems great for gaming... but Ive only got my old 32" lcd to compare it too, so this is a massive upgrade!

Just a little note about this TV if anyone is thinking about buying one. The HMDI and sockets are quite close to the edge of the display. This might cause issues if you are using high quality cables which tend to be more ridged.
Thats the only fault i can see so far, if anything else crops up ill add it here.

You can buy 90 degree adapters if it's a problem. There's no need for expensive cables anyways so get the cheap bendy ones...
-
I might well buy some of those simon. Or i might just bin the overly stiff cable in favour of a ebay special :happy2:

Do you have a B&M Home Store near you? They do v1.4 cables for £2.99 and they work perfick.
Or this site is cheap: http://www.thatcable.com/search/90%20degree
