Hey all,
Just a quick question, my check oil level lights come up on the dash and requires a top up. I was told to buy 5W-40, which I did. Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic 5W-40 but now after looking on the Internet people seem to be saying 5W-30 is actually what I need, who is right?
Car is VW Golf GT TDI (Mark 5) (58 Plate)
Need to top it up first thing tomorrow so advice is greatly appreciated.
Oh it's also been serviced every 10,000 miles (approx) the last service had the "Longlife oil used" box ticked on "Yes" though?

Eek, why is your check engine light on? Check your oil regularly man :(
Either of those Full Syn Edge weights will be fine for top up.

Well that's the thing, I do check it every couple of weeks. The oil level is still between the min & max markers so I'm not sure why it's even coming on, had an oil change a month ago. Cheers!

wHat ever you do, dont use 5/40 thats for vehicle with no dpf
and its not meant for 2.0tdi engines
5w30 l3

5/40 really isn't going to make a difference for top up purposes. Any oil is better than no oil.

I wouldn't put much in then. Probably a faulty sensor... do you have VCDS to reset it.

5W30 is what you need (currently), 507.00 spec as well if you have DPF.
My light came on just the once and i check level quite regularly. My MK4 1.9gt tdi oil level never moved, but Mk5 seems to use a little more, so top-up might be necessary between services.
VW dealers in essex & suffolk are using shell helix ultra AV-L at the mo. Special AV grade for vw's. Comes in 5litres, instead of castrol 4L, £39 from moto-oil.co.uk delivered.

any VW 504/507 spec oil. favourite seems to be Castrol Edge.
vRSAlex is quite fond of Millers Nanodrive however. it doesn't have the VW rating, but exceeds all of VW's criteria anyway

And anyone with a Costco card can get the Castrol Edge 5-30 fully synthetic for £23.99 for 4 litres instead of the £46.99 that Halfords charge. I found this out when I went in to get some the other week!
