Title: Best Boost Gauge 2012
Post by: GTI-Ross on December 04, 2012, 09:13:46 pm
hey up guys, looking to fit myself a boost gauge to keep an eye on the pressure. Which is the best boost gauge out there at the minute?

I have read some other threads on boost gauges. But no one  has really confirmed which ones are good.

Can you please recommend some and if you have a good installation guide that would be awesome too.

Cheers guys

I've got this gauge fitted. Seems accurate and has been in with no issues for probably 18months

.
Definitely Defi make the best but they are probably the most expensive. They can record boost levels for later analysis. cmdrfire has Defi gauges on his Mk5 GTI.

I have Newsouth - The display perfectly matches the Mk5 GTI OEM instruments.

How do you have it installed? fixed in or sat on top?

Hey RR, where did you but it from? Was it easy enough to install?

I mounted it into the drivers side vent (on a Leon though)

Like them in the right hand side vent. Look very OEM and the blue light is the same as the other dials at nighttime but you can't use the vent probably though. Can also be mounted on the central column. Goes off to find a review........

Here you go. Robins review....

Just been off to look for the Defi Gauge, seem to be over £100 more expensive than the Newsouth Gauge.

Yeah i think i will look at the NewSouth, dont want to spend too much when it pretty much the same thing. Just wondering how hard they are to install. Between me and my mate we have a decent DIY standard.....might have too look it to it...

I'm interested too... Just looked up on awsome was about 130 for the pod and gauge. didnt see a 'fitting kit' anywhere

Would like to know how hard it is to fit to my TDI

i was considering trying to organise a GB, but i figured that most people would just get the Polar FIS+ instead? so really it's only Audi owners who would potentially be interested as the Polar FIS doesn't work on the Audi DIS

Lol you should edit the thread title to say "Best boost gauge on a budget" The Defi gauges are more expensive for a reason!

I have a newsouth boost gauge and this:

http://www.newsouthperformance.com/pod029.htm

The newsouth gauges have an issue with them never really returning to 0, if you tap them the dial then moves. (not on all of them)

....That looks pretty cool but, functionally because boost displays its value extremely quickly I would much rather have it in line of sight while driving. Also, like a wrist watch, analogue display is usually more quickly and easily read by the human brain. It's more effective to abstractly read just the angle of a clock's arm to get the information than to read just numbers. IMO.

I have a newsouth boost gauge and this:

http://www.newsouthperformance.com/pod029.htm

....Doesn't fitting those result in not being able to use the 'ashtray' compartment?

Also, personally, I don't want to be looking down at my boost gauge in the depths of my car. It would be good for an oil temperature gauge though which you don't need to check so often nor while on the move.

TBH when i need to look at the boost gauge (when im troubleshooting or checking everything is ok) i always have my eyes on the road and get a passenger to do it, but i do agree its not in the best position for glancing. I just wanted a OEM look, and someone looking through the windows can easily see a pod above my steering wheel.

Also i can still use the 12v plug and store things in the ash tray just not cover it up.

....Good to know that the 'ashtray' compartment is still usable  :happy2:

Having experienced a turbo failure (cracked wastegate) I find that I want to be able to safely glance at my boost gauge occasionally while driving, just to be able to monitor that all is behaving as it should. I used to have my boost gauge fitted in the air vent but moved it. I always monitor the rev counter and boost gauge whenever I start up the engine from cold - Also the temperature gauge although it's only water temp on the Mk5 GTI.

i think the bars at the top with the lights to the right are the boost gauge RR. so you do have an analogue reading, just not in circular form. i really want one!

....It's certainly in-yer-face but needs to be easily read while on the road (or track) and it is very good from that point of view.

Cmdrfire has both his Defi gauges mounted in the same position and having been in the car it does make a lot of sense, especially at night. However, some folks like to hide what they've got fitted - It's what best suits the individual.

....That's the same as 'ribbon' bar levels on sound monitoring gear - The professionals prefer the old fashioned VU meters - I wonder why!

In fact, Waves, who are acknowledged masters of software sound editing plug-ins, use VU meter styles.

And what kind of instrumentation style do you see in aircraft? - Not bar ribbons. There's good reason and it's how the human brain most quickly can process the information.

but i'm not flying an aircraft, i don't need to be able to make millisecond by millisecond readings in information! at the end of the day, the car doesn't currently have a boost gauge. any gauge is better than none and for my particular usage i don't feel that taking looks into account is necessarily to my detriment.

....I was only using the aircraft example to illustrate how ergonomic design takes into account human factors wherever it's applied. Whatever machine you are controlling, whether an aircraft or a motor vehicle, or a kitchen appliance, the same design considerations apply when the aim is to achieve the most efficient and safe operation.

You can't dismiss or ignore the known ways in which humans operate. Well, correction, you can ignore it all and merely be concerned about how equipment aesthetically looks to others, as you appear to prefer to do. Of course, well designed functional equipemt can also look good but aesthetics alone render something limited. There's nothing wrong with your attitude towards such things but, in my opinion, you are missing out.

Whilst I take opinions regarding technical advice from the knowledgable members of this forum VERY seriously, I respectfully could not care less what they think about the aesthetics of my car. The subjective opinion of what looks the best is personal to me.

In this case, the negligible (imho) benefit of having a slightly easier read out to me does not warrant an uglier (again imho) solution.

I love the boost gauge that sub linked to. Very Knight Rider-ish. I don't need one but sticking one on the cowl would obstruct my view of the dash (already tried it with a cardboard cut out) and I don't want to lose a vent (I normally point it towards the window to demost). Hence sub's one makes a good compromise. I would love to see one in action though.

has more features than i thought. the gauge has boost gauge, EGT, oil and coolant temps, battery voltage, 0-60mph timer, speed readout from the ECU, rev counter with customisable shift light

but what i don't understand is why any non-Audi PQ35 chassis car owner wouldn't go for Polar FIS? they're not compatible with Audis, but if they were that's what i'd be having personally

Buy the gauge (comes with full fitting kit) then get the vent gauge holder from Awesome, I then bought some better quality vac hose to feed the gauge.
