Hi Guys,
I've had my original PS3 since just after launch so its now a few years old. Has been faultless up to now but all of a sudden I'm havong a problem.
Once it starts up it freezes some time before you get the chance to select a game etc. None of the remotes respond so the unit has to be switched off. Once restarted it complains about not being switched of properly and so the routine begins once again!! :fighting2:
So my questions are:
Anyone heard of this before?
Is it fixable?
If not what happens to all of my stored game data etc on the hard drive?
Does anyone have a cheap PS3 going?
Thanks in advance! :drinking:

Have you done the reset? Pressing and holding resets a few settings that has cured this for me in the past. Can't remember If it's the power button on the older ps3s beeps like 3 or 4 times after holding for 20secs

Cheers Ed,
Pretty sure we have as you have to hold it to turn it off when it freezes as the remotes seem to stop responding too. Will give it a go though just incase! :happy2:

Upgrade your hard drive. I think the fat ps3's used seagate hardrives and I had no end of trouble. I swapped mine for Western Digital 320gb and had no problems since.
Try defragging your ps3 first, video below.

Thanks chap, only problem I can see is it won't stay on long enough without freezing for me to try the defrag?

How handy are you with a soldering iron? The first fat ps3's were quite bad at bricking themselves, had mine replced under warranty quite some time ago. Something to do with bad quality solder used and heat build up. There are plenty of youtube vids on how to. Sounds like to me its terminal :scared:

Perfect if you dont need buckets of storage.

Thanks all. So it looks as though it may be about dead then!
Question is, What happens to the games I have bought online and my hours/days of Gran Turismo data??

Could be fooked unless you have the same as we do on Xbox. All your game data is recorded against your Live account.
Not much help directly but hopefully it's the same. If not get an Xbox.

Been there done that!
Really don't know, I guess after 5-6 years I'm not too bothered about getting another one as they have come down in price a lot, it's the data that is bothering me!

Well... are we presuming its a hardware fault... but NOT an issue with the Hard disk?
If so... get an identical ps3 2nd hand off ebay and just swap the drives. Might work.. i guess.

Possibly Rich.........
Watched a few vids on YouTube (no not that sort Hedge) and managed to get in long enough to run a software update. Fingers crossed!

If you can keep it switched on long enough you can transfer all of your saved game data to a usb stick. Your online identity is safe along with other save game data, such as your gran turismo online progress, as this data is stored on there servers. If you buy a new ps3,you can then transfer your data from your usb drive to your new ps3,then create your ps3 acount with your online identity. He presto, no loss of data. Hope this helps :-)
