Title: auto dimming mirrors
Post by: danfalcon on December 09, 2012, 10:23:51 pm
hey guys

looking for a little bit of advice/pointers here

i really like the auto dimming rear view mirrors on my golf but get annoyed when there is someone behind me as all i see is blinding light in my 2 wing mirrors!

so i was wondering if it is possible to make the wing mirrors auto dimming as well or would it be too much effort/cost for something so small

thanks in advance guys  :happy2:

yes it's possible, and if it's anything like the A3 then it's not technically difficult either

BUT the mirror glass is quite expensive

you would need to add 2 wires from the interior rear view mirror all the way to the mirror glass. PITA

if you still want to do it then you need the electrochrome mirror glass (new price nearly £180 each) can be picked up on ebay for less but rare

I know it doesn't help with the original question but I have these as factory fit on my 2005 GTI DSG and they work really well - so much so that driving other vehicles without at night seems difficult now.  It's the usual case of you don't know what you're missing until you have it!

And yes the mirror glass is VERY expensive!

I've had these fitted from new. Thought it was standard equipment, but obviously not. Maybe it was part of the folding mirror pack?

well i am the second owner of my car, but it had folding mirrors as standard but not the auto dimming

it may be because i have the 1.9TDi and it came standard on other models  :sad1:

lux pack 1 was just folding and reverse dip mirror

lux pack 2 was folding, reverse dip and auto dimming driver mirror

Guess I've got lux pack 2 then. No reverse dip though, they weren't doing that in '05 :(

Nope, unfortunately no reverse dip on my 05 either but both of my wing mirrors are photochromatic (dimming) glass so not the end of the world...

That's another great thing they did, both sides on really early golfs, then only drivers on later ones to save money I spose, typical VW

what about just changing the glass from both mirrors to an anti dazzle design ? would that work ?
not ideal I know but maybe worth a look
