Title: 4WD in my GTI ?
Post by: rubber toe on December 11, 2012, 08:45:52 pm
So basically I've got the chance of a written off R32 with what I would imagine would be most of the parts I would need to 4wd
I've read the feature in vw magazine http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,55009.0.html (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,55009.0.html) and it makes it sounds fairly simple

My concern is if it is that simple why are there not more 4wd GTI's out there ?

Does anyone know of any other 4wd GTI's complete or in progress ?
Would really like to get all the info I can before starting ie any potential problems fitment/coding wise  :happy2:

Cheers
Robert

Thanks guys  :drinking:

If I'm honest it will be a new year project myself , I've got a feeling I'm going to have to just crack on and deal with things if and when they arrive .

Just need to gather as much info as I can to try a to keep the turnaround as short as possible

From what I've read on here is that most of it bolts on, I think its the spare wheel well needs to go and a different shaped fuel tank, I could be wrong. Best to speak with alex, I would say james but he's in NZ for a while

I was going to do it,  but it's a much faster car keeping it front wheel drive.  The extra weight spoils the handling.

Four wbeel drive is great for launches.

The TTRS race car that Audi build is converted back into front wheel drive.

you're forgetting you'll need new springs for the back, plus a new exhaust. in all it's not a cheap exercise

Not sure why someone would spend want to spend so much time & money on a 4WD GTI when u can just buy an S3 :rolleye:

^^ This, and also considering the cost of doing it, why you wouldn't Turbo charge a MK5 R32 instead

MyGels cupra is awesome just had a read through the build thread there  :congrats: :congrats:

As far as I'm aware the full running gear is untouched so hopefully I can just swap the complete rear subframe, fuel tanks etc and welding shouldn't be a problem.

Interesting to know about the ttrs race car , but tbh I've just been getting sick of traction or lack of especially in the wet, which in Scotland is most days haha

I'm almost 100% confident I can do this conversion if its as straightforward as it looks for less than it would cost me to buy an S3 , plus I prefer the look of the golf and I 100% know the cars history etc

Have looked into getting an R32 and charging it but the cost to do it right is  :stupid:

Don't even need to buy an S3, as there are other "quattro" A3s available.

even diesel ones!

I thought about selling the eddy & getting a r32 & turbo it or supercharge it but fell of my chair when I saw the prices for a turbo kit or supercharger kit.. Gonna save up for a golfR instead..good luck with yr project mate

I know the OP has already got a written off R32, so this won't help him, but would it not be easier to just drop an ED30 engine into an R32? You would then have a 4WD Golf with a highly tunable lump with surely less modification required?

would have thought the same myself ian, i suppose if you can undertake the majority of work yourself i dont think it would matter either way

but it would be easier still to buy an S3 than it would an R32 and a GTI lump!

we'll have to agree to disagree on that (Mk6 R does look better than an S3 tho)

I can see the advantage of making a golf AWD as you'll still have cheaper tax etc than dropping a gti lump in an R32.

Personally I would get an r32 as the expense for making a GTI AWD seems a PITA and the outlay to convert would probably offset running costs of the r32.

Saying that it would be a good project to  do and enjoy reading about (like the cupra) but not something I would personally undertake

Can't really see the point in either myself, as the insurance will be stupid on such a modified car...

Where's the fun in that? And the idea is to get a 4wd GTi, not an Audi. You could simply change the front end to that of an Ed30, job done!

The traction benefits of an R32 with the power of a remapped ED30 engine (Much less weight) = MUCH MORE FUN , think of it as a Golf R on the cheap  :happy2:

GTI weight - 1303kg
R32 weight - 1447kg

Haldex weight (based on comparing A3 2.0T quattro and FWD variants) - 90kg

There's just over 50kg in it, and how much of that will be taken up once you add R32 brakes/rollbars for the extra weight etc?

Haha never really started this thread for the merits of 4 wheel driving my car , although have found the points made interesting
Was just looking for more info on the swap itself before I start

The way I see it is

My car is worth around £6k
And pretty confident I can do the conversion for less than £2k

So I will eventually have a 360bhp 4wd GTI that I don't owe any money on or go out and find a similar car for around £8k which IMO will be very hard to find  :driver:
