Hi Guys,
We are restructuring our fleet (all 2 cars) I amd being downgraded and SWMBO is upgrading to a family car from a city car as the kids are taking up more and more space.
I just wondered if anyone else has done this or considered this and how have you found going from a comfortable 200bhp car to a thrashy 60bhp city car. I have pulled the trigger on this one and my citigo will be here in march but in the back of my mind I am wondering if I will weasel my way out of this somehow and get into the big thirsty car again.

I went from a stage 1 s3 to a mini one diesel and hated it.
Give us a bit more info? For example are you wanting to release cash from your current car or are you trying to reduce running costs?

I was given a VW UP as a loan car when my car was at the dealer
I wouldn't want it for long trips, but round town it was fun to drive

Basically my wife has a fiat 500 on a baloon payment scheme and thats ending in March, I have a golf mk5 gti bought outright so basically it makes more sense as we have kids and she is a full time mum for her to have the larger hatch then struggle in the 500 which is super small now, So I get the citigo on a similar monthly low payment scheme that we had the 500 on, and she gets something large either bought outright or nearly bought outright, which I can drive as well on the weekends havn`t decided what yet, she doesnt want the golf gti as I get really upset when she drives it / Uses it etc. in case she scratches a wheel or marks the interior, and she thinks i`ll still be like this after I let her loose on it with the kids, usually im ok but the gti im very protective of interms of kerbing and any scratches, as there are none from what I can see and I want to keep it like that, where as the 500 looks like its driven through hedges.
so thats the idea behind the trade, i have ofcourse test driven it and as the reviews state its more upmarket then any other other city car and its cheap to run its like a sensible 5 door fiat 500 for old gits who dont like to much colour in there cars. But I have struggles to see the good in any car since being a gti owner its just so dman nice compared with anything else in its class I wonder if i will cope?

Whats your monthly budget/dep?
I would shop around as you can pcp a new or used vehicle which may allow you to get something you enjoy?

Seriously though, a neighbour has a Citigo, never been on it but it looks good and does what it says on the tin.
Keep the GTI as your family car or you'll end up with a soot chucking plastic French people carrier and all driving joy from your life will have been snuffed out (at least until the kids have grown up).

Your so right I would never drive a citroen picasso dont worry, whats a decent second car which doubles as a family car for around 10k used which would be as fun as the gti but wouldnt be the gti, I have 18" Monza wheels in perfect condition tbh if one day I saw a mark on them I know I would hit the roof, yet if we puposely get something she can drive I can resign myself to the fact its going to have a few wear and tear marks

Look at an Altea FR, great for extra space but has a 2.0 TFSI or 170 TDI and a good chassis.

I have never considered Seat cars beacuse of there terrible interiors I had an ibiza and the interior looked terribly dated in the 2 years I owned it, the look great from the outside though, I may well do some research on the Altea maybe they have improved things.

I agree, we have an Altea and it serves its role as the practical car, but we have nice leathers and good spec with a few additions from me.
My brother in law has a Leon Cupra R and it doesn't even have a glovebox light, they aren't a quality car in that respect.

i've run a 500 twin air for 18 months as a sh£tty for the city which has been as chips as to run and keeps the mileage a lot lower on the Ed35, never bother where i leave it and small enough to avoid parking dinks and great in the city
you do notice the power difference hence why i'm likely to order an Abarth 500 to replace it in the next couple of weeks, wanted small but more punch

I don't like the Octavia vrs I think it's to big if they do bring out the rapid vrs I would be most interested. I would like to have a city car and a weekend car but sadly I should have studied harder as I don't have the wages to do that.

I have always ran a small city car of around 60ps from end November to April each year I have done this for over 20 years now. What I find is you adapt and it also teaches you to learn to drive properly again. You learn to build up speed to overtake, you learn to anticipate traffic more. It then ment later on in the year the GTI always felt faster again. It's actually saved me money doing this as I'm not constantly wanting more power due to bad driving habbits and getting use to things. I know its a different situation to yours but I don't find it a hardship after a few weeks.
This year is the first year I have not done this and am running something with more power 130ps (with winter tyres fitted too) and i thought I would never say this but boy am I missing a small city car in the snow and ice.

What about an Audi A4 estate for SWMBO, and get something smaller for yourself, but also fun? How about a 172 Cup or a Lupo GTi? Makes 'Bangernomics' sense! I have to say, I've got a real craving for a 172 cup. You can get a really good one in that lovely electric blue paint with 70k on the clock for 2K!!

That Up GT looks wicked, how much do they go for. I went past my local vw dealer and saw adverts for about a 2k deposit and pay £80 per month but I guess thats for the basic Up

I think the Yeti or the A4 would be great cars, I doubt I would get a very recent A4 as they tend to hold there value, I wouldnt want a high mileage one with work possibly due, so it maybe a yeti which I think looks like a great car and I still remember the topgear review where Clarkson was driving through a building that was on fire and the climate control stopped his ice cream melting.
I see a lot of Nissan Jukes about I would say there one of the most popular cars round where I live any experience of them? are they particularly nippy etc.
The Citigo is on its way I have already ordered it 60bhp of raw sensible driving, its the family car I cant decide on, after working out our finances we can spend about 12k and it will be mainly used around town in the week and for trips out on the weekend so about 5,000 miles a year of use, im not keen on diesel as I had a Volvo that needed a DPF filter changing because it didnt get enough long journeys and the bill was nearly £2000!!!!

Id at the very least get something diesel with 140BHP.

Whats so bad about them? they look quite funky, I wouldnt need a diesel for only doing 5,000 miles per year I might as well buy the petrol version. I would want at least 140bhp for the second car but no more then the GTI.

My citigo is £120 per month for 15,000 mile a year contract on the top spec version, so £80 must be the basic wind up window version. basically the cars start at £7k but the nice ones being the top of the range are £11K - £12k and the sport would probably be £13k thats why I went for a citigo as it worked out £2000 less then the equiv VW up. they start cheap but they have next to no kit its a bit of a con as I cant see many people wanting the billy base version really.
