apologies if this thread has been done before but I couldn't find it on the search
I am trying to decide if the bonnet bra looks cool or not,
seemingly there is a few different ones out there for the gti, plain, ribbed and also seen a gti logo one.
if anyone has pics of different coloured gti's with a bra on that would be great.
have also seen a few comments regarding the strapping that holds it onto the car can actually rub against the paint with possible damage !! that could be untrue though I don't know tbh.
anyway would value any input guys
:happy2: :happy2:
ps,,,, naming it something other than a BONNET BRA :surprised: :surprised: would have been a good idea lol
-
if that helps :

I wouldnt bother mate. Dont think they look great to be honest! :happy2:
-
Tbh i think they look total toss buuut i do run one on long motorway journeys. For me its there to do a job and not about looks. It comes off as soon as i arrive at my destination. Tbh its down to personal preference imo.
-
Yeah, it's a resounding no from me. If you want to protect the bonnet invest in something like Venture Shield.
-
I've seen these posts on loads of forums and 90% of people hate them for one reason or another , they don't like the look ,they tell you they mark the paint , they say they don't cover where the chips happen etc etc , but if everyone hates them why are their lots of companies making a living making and selling them someone MUST like them their buying them
for me i used one on my old A3 , it didn't mark the paint because i didn't leave it on for weeks at end and never used it in the rain , it covered 90% of the chips already on the bonnet and even i wasn't a fan of the looks but who cares its your car and it got to the stage i would use it just to get people pointing and talking never worried me what they throught
pics for you haters to hate :happy2:

I don't like how they look either.
I suppose you have to decide either to accept the inevitable stone chips and have your bonnet resprayed every few years for a few hundred £, or buy a cheap bra and live with the looks.
-
.
Wear a bra, or go bra-less? - It's the question which everyone isn't sure about when they consider a bra of the car variety.
It's a marmite thing - They look great on American long-distance trucks and on black cars but not on other coloured cars in my opinion. On one hand they protect from stone chips etc but on the other hand they can collect abrasive grit/dust under them. Personally, I don't follow the vehicle in front too closely and so lessen the risk - At least, that's the theory.
I like some bras though:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2FRedRobin_05%2FRED_INK%2FBonnetBras_zps8a26d10a.jpg&hash=0d1dc8ce51c5d27aadf8a263858db86b4b16c399)
Now THIS is a bra!............

-
It's there to do a job isn't it so what it looks like shouldn't really be a priority, I'm sure some people just put them on because they think they're cool, personally I'd feel a bit of a plonker with one on.....(the car not me)
-
They loot sh*t but I have one for the occasional motorway drive and for the gritting season. Can't believe anyone would buy for its aesthetics value as it has none. Takes all sorts though.
Only problem is the havoc it causes underneath with the paint work from all the detritus on the roads so its straight on with the Bra onto a waxed bonnet (multiple layers) and straight off when I get where I'm going and a bonnet wash.
Never had any comments other than p*ss taking. And no I'm not posting a pic of my Eddy wearing one for someone to bring it up at a later date!
-
If you do buy 1, don't get a non branded 1, I made that mistake and the fit it shocking
-

....No need for you to post one, Martin - The forum's 2013 calendar now has a shot of Miss October (your car) wearing a bra
-
ok point taken, it looks sh*t lol
binning that idea then
thanks guys
:happy2:
-
Mate if you like it then put one on it doesn't matter what other people think
End of the day it's your car not theirs
I have one to protect mine from stone chips
-
Nothing cool about them, however they are entirely practical when used for the right reasons... This time of year with grit being thrown all over the place (some pieces are quite chunky i've found, esp on motorways) or motorway journeys in general to help protect the front end.
But certainly wouldnt fit one with the idea of thinking it makes my car look cool... absolutely not!
-
I would rather
worm the dog by hand live with a few stone chips than put a bonnet bra on a car

Spot on Gazon! I'm with you there, I think they look sh1t as, I'd rather take the stone-chips than have that on my car. I can sort of understand it if you're really into detailing and exhibiting your car at shows, but then I don't really understand that for Golfs. For me, these are every-day cars to be driven, if you want to do all that mallarky, get yourself an Austin Healey or a TR6! I go down to North Devon quite a lot, and like you I'd consider one for the journey down, but that would be it.
(Awaits gunning down by detailling crew :popcornsoda:)

I posted a similar thread a little while back because I couldn't understand why people had them:

PMSL!!!
-
Most cars on this forum are performance orientated, it suits certain a certain style of car IMO
-
I am sick of stone chips!!
My car gets on the motorway and gets off 35 miles later Mon-Fri, only just put it on yesterday.
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fag38%2Fstanipkiss%2FDSC04427_zps1b85e971.jpg&hash=87a4fac13e737f86c8de123c41c6ca3b6c7720a5)
It will probably come off on Friday night!
Should have been £65 but auction on ebay ended at stupid o'clock in the morning so only paid £12 inc postage.
-
i do almost 700 miles a week in my R32, have got an original VW R line one which fits great.
Function over form for me ( I also have gay headlight protectors for this very reason)

Mk4 Headlights are glass though and not cheap to replace, so Im happy with having them on
-
.
I do my fair share of motorway miles - M1 and M27 mostly but also plenty of fast A-road dual carriageways such as A3 and A34, and I rarely suffer from stone chips etc. With a carbon bonnet I'm not so fussed anyway - It ain't gonna rust.
-
seems I opened up a can of worms with this thread, they certainly look interesting, my car is met black,,, from what I can see its the best colour car to have one of these fitted.
my bonnet isn't to bad for chips but I may get a bonnet respray done after next xmas, just had the car 3 months and takes a while to get through all the jobs tbh.
I watched a film last night called three amigos with nick nolte,,,, from the eighties - remember it - ????
anyway there was a red Porsche on there with a black bonnet bra
it looked shocking lol and wtf did they call it a bra ????
they could have called it something like a stone killer,,,,, black death,,, or that fooking annoying advert on tv that is on right this minute with that plonker I want to strangle selling cillit bang, barry scott his name is,,,, most annoying guy on tv,,,, just want to hurt him
they could have called it the cillit bang wrap :stupid:
anyway cheers guys :happy2:
-
originally I wanted one for mine but only the OEM GTI one that was for sale in america but they are as rare a rocking horse poo. Now I've gone off the idea, I've recently had my bonnet resprayed and I did briefly want one but tbh theres too many corsa's and the like with them on round here so its put me well off now
-
.
Unless your car suffers badly from stone chips because of your lifestyle etc, there's absolutely no point fitting a bonnet bra, IMO.
-
Definitely not cool, if your that worried about stone chips don't drive the car!

yeah rr im thinking the same, I drive quite cautiously and always cautious of getting to close,,, when I do have to take over I usually do it from 50 metres back and then do a bat out of hell pass lol,,, when its straight road obviously lol

The only thing I dont get is what about the rest of the front of the car. They only seem to protect such a small portion of the front. Not for me im afraid
-
^^^^ if your more paranoid than us peeps with just a bonnet bra then you can go "full gimp" to protect the whole front.

it looks mad, want it want it want it :jumping: :jumping:
here is where my severe lack of exterior body mods comes in
I assume the only way to get it red is to mod the existing one and if so is it done by wrapping or painting,,,, im thinking about durability here with stones etc hitting it.
sorry for the noob questions on this guys but I don't have a clue about this kind of stuff

@Scott.
Go see a vinyl wrap company, should be no more than about £50 max for that. Come down to Sussex and I'll wrap it for free (you supply the vinyl), its that easy.
Oh you'll first need an Edition30 splitter or similar if you haven't got one!

sorry mc forgive me but im going to ask a really noob question here,
I know nothing about splitters but my gti has that lip on the front,,, how does it differ from the one in the pic,,, is mine standard ? and why is it called a splitter anyway,,, is it because it splits the air ?
see what I mean :ashamed:

I'm pretty sure if you look underneath the front of the car you can see where it detaches, then take it off and get it wrapped.
And yes it splits the air, hence the name splitter. I'm no expert but I'm sure someone could talk you through getting the splitter bit off and doing whatever you plan with it Scott :happy2:

have I got that right ?????
didn't really want to put a picture of my car next to that other lovely beast of a car but ah well :ashamed:
I now see the difference in the splitters, other one looks way better.
can I just fit one onto my car and if so any ideas if it is something I can do myself or where to get one ?
cheers :happy2:
-
@Scott.
Grenners car was an Edition30.
As mentioned, best to take it off or at least lift the front of the car up so you (or the person wrapping it) are not laying on the ground/floor, just makes it awkward. Your splitter (GTI) is textured so IMO would need prepping before wrapping at it tends not to adhere to rough surfaces. Painted surfaces are best.
:happy2:

No worries Scott, the ED30s splitter is different from the GTI version yes.
"I think" you may be able to transfer the lower part onto a GTI front bumper................best to search it using the function on here and see if I'm right or wrong, I'd say it's a 50/50 :signLOL:

sorry mc forgive me but im going to ask a really noob question here,
I know nothing about splitters but my gti has that lip on the front,,, how does it differ from the one in the pic,,, is mine standard ? and why is it called a splitter anyway,,, is it because it splits the air ?
see what I mean :ashamed:
I'm pretty sure if you look underneath the front of the car you can see where it detaches, then take it off and get it wrapped.
And yes it splits the air, hence the name splitter. I'm no expert but I'm sure someone could talk you through getting the splitter bit off and doing whatever you plan with it Scott :happy2:
thanks andy, I think im getting a better understanding of it now, correct me if I am wrong
this is a picture of an ed30 splitter

have I got that right ?????
didn't really want to put a picture of my car next to that other lovely beast of a car but ah well :ashamed:
I now see the difference in the splitters, other one looks way better.
can I just fit one onto my car and if so any ideas if it is something I can do myself or where to get one ?
cheers :happy2:
[/quote]hmmm, now I see both cars side by side it looks like it would take a lot more than a new splitter
looks like splitter, new side skirts, new skirt for its butt :booty:
emmmm, car then lowered and lastly everything colour coded :sad1:
would you agree on that, guess I cant just throw the new splitter on by the looks of it
