Dear All,
I wanted to take a few moments to post something here that is poignant. Having been a member on here for the past 4 and a bit years I'm proud to have been part of such a great online community - certainly one of the best forums I have engaged with and that's down to all of you. So, thank you to everyone for making it is what it is, providing useful information, sharing experiences, giving advice and of course, banter.
Some of you will be aware that I am off to New Zealand (permanently). I went out to NZ in the summer and decided that I wanted to be out there as soon as I could. So I've worked really hard in past few months securing work, medicals, visa, selling car, process of selling van and flat etc.... Time has flown by and on Saturday I leave for Auckland. Many have said that it is the opening of a new chapter in my life story book - I am thinking that it is actually a whole new book. I'm moving over to be with someone very special and have secured work out there in Hamilton on the North Island. As I'm living 2 mins off of the West Coast in Raglan (if we have any surfers here then you might now of Manu Bay / Indicators etc.... - best left hand break in the world and where they filmed Endless Summer) my affliction for fast things may well turn to jetski's/PWC's as well as cars.
Rest assured I will still drop in from time, albeit a little less frequently, to see what's going on and I still have a number of threads subscribed to :happy2:
In the meantime, everyone take care, drive safe and above all - enjoy your car :happy2:
Wishing you all a happy christmas and all the best for 2013

I would love to emigrate, but its not about courage. IT skills are just not going to get you a visa for most countries. I'm stuffed as far as thats concerned. Now if you are a nurse/surgeoon. Its like an automatic pass.

All the best Dom! Hope all will work out for you!

Good luck Dom it takes some balls to do this and I'm pleased for you.
Wishing you all the best for the future, just think of us when you are sat there with your pina colada on New Years Day. :happy2:

Good Luck Dom :happy2:
My eldest daughter is half way through her round the world trip, at the moment she is doing The Kiwi Experience coach trip and is spending Christmas in the South Island at a friends place in Wanaka, near Queenstown, she will be doing the North Island in 2 weeks.
Just sent me these pics, NZ looks amazing.
In one day she went from this,

Bugger off and never darken our doors again :signLOL:
Seriously though. I've met Dom on quite a few occasions as well as conversations over the phone from time to time and can truly say it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. All the best for your future exploits and remember to keep a bunk spare just in case I'm down that way (I've always wanted to visit NZ).
Fast boats should be the order of the day for you from now on and I expect to see pics of the new tub as soon as you take delivery.

-
All the best Dom,
Haven't been on the forum long, but I appreciated your welcome when I joined up. I'm loving my ED30 more every day!
Enjoy NZ - it's certainly a great place. I was born in Auckland, but the family moved to the UK when I was quite young, and they stayed here when the last recession hit! Have been back after I finished Uni - my Uncle lives outside Auckland at Piha - has an amazing view over the coast & Lion rock.
I've thought of making the move before (seeing as I have Dual Nationality), but so far have never had the balls to do it!
Hope you will check in here in future with any updates,
Cheers,
Dave

Kia Ora Dom,
Hope you enjoy the lifestyle that NZ has to offer.
As for cars the roads are fairly poor, and the speed limit is 100 Km (62mph), and they are very tough on speeding, and have a hawk system fitted to most police cars, that picks up speed of vehicles travelling to and from them, while they're on the move, 5 Km over the speed limit and you'll be done .
Cheers
Kiwi

....Oh dear! :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: - It sounds as if the whole road system is more akin to a small Caribbean island. But that, of course, has it's major pluses regarding lifestyle. You can have fun just trundling around in a camper van or pickup.
:happy2:

HSV Maloo ftmfw!
-
Friend of mine just moved back to the uk after living in NZ for about 4 years and said its crazy expensive to live and how bad the roads are once you are out of Auckland as its just dirt roads :rolleye: still said its a stunning place but you are very cut off from most things and its not busy like the uk. Things like Internet is not cheap either and basic stuff like the paper or bread/milk is mad money. My friend was a teacher out there and travelled all over NZ on weekends off and flew a few place too like the set of lord of the rings
-
I have some friends who moved there a few years back and they love it. Not sure which half they moved to*, but I don't think they wanna come back...
Bon voyage, Dom.
*edit: near Auckland, I think...

Good luck and all the best!! credit for seeing something you want and making it happen :drinking:

Guys,
Thank you so much for all the comments - really appreciated. To be honest, have been quite chuffed with the number of responses. The prospect of going is finally starting to sink in now that I have time to think about it rather than focusing on all the organising that has gone into things. Term finishes tomorrow and today has been a bit overwhelming - over 1,000 students showing their appreciation in whole school assembly is nice.
As for the Golf R - they're not much of a premium over there to be honest. 2 year old car = £25k with half decent spec. Having spent 6 weeks in the summer over there I totally agree with the comments made about driving. Cost of living isn't actually too bad - need to look at the bigger picture. I'd say weekly food shop is about a 5% premium over the UK, with some items a fair bit more. But, car insurance much cheaper than UK, taxation not a harsh as UK. Decent interest rates, if you have the money to invest. For me, it is very much about the lifestyle choice :happy2:
Has been manic this week with all of belongings being picked up on Monday - set sail from Harwich on Friday and I will see them again mid March by the time they clear customs. Am shipping 220 cubic feet which has worked out at 15p per mile. Not bad I thought.
So a taster of what is to come - picture taken Monday about 2 mins from the house:

Looking forward to getting out there and having 5 weeks off before starting work...
Can't wait... :pomppomp:
-
Dom,
Im insanely jealous :sad1:

Wish you all the best for your future, its definitely the right choice.
But you dont need a Golf R, you need one of these

Yeah, that's the Maloo that Hedge mentioned - two a penny out there though it seems, saw quite a few when I was out there in the summer. Have a look here - http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/holden/hsv/auction-534118742.htm silly fuel economy though and NZ fuel prices have gone mad in recent months, still a bit cheaper than the UK at 1.18 a litre though.

Make sure everything is clean if your taking a push bike make sure the tyres are spot less they made my friend scrub his bike in bleach they are very touchy about things ie germs entering the country

Well we welcome you over in NZ mate,
It's only an hour or so's drive from Auckland to Hamilton.
So let me know, perhaps catch up for a beer or 3 when you are over here.
If need any assistance on making the Golf R better. That I can surely assist with as well. Lol
If it comes down to it.
NZ is a great place to live, that is for sure. I guess we will see you early next year I'm guessing?
I know what the whole international move is all about. That really is not that great of a feeling
