Title: Mini Cooper S JCW
Post by: SL03 JOE on December 27, 2012, 09:33:30 pm
Hi, seeing as the MKV is now sold, new owner picking up Sunday. I was thinking of getting something 4wd, but I saw an r56 jcw the other day and it looked and sounded fantastic! But I hear they have a few problems!? Anyone had one or experienced any them selves?

The other option I have is my brothers R53 mini, running a nice 260bhp and is highly tuned but to a reliable level. I looked at buying that and possibly twin screwing it?

Has anyone had one of these? Good cars? Reliable?

Cheers, Joe

They are decent cars though i was disappointed when mine turned up.
I ordered a Mini Cooper in black with a red roof and ended up with this.

The moral of the story!. Make sure the car you buy is as described.  :innocent: :pomppomp:

Yeah I did, but the minis seem to put it down very well according to all the reviews!

Think I'm going for the R53 :D

Rich the r35 has a GP Motorsport top mount ic.

Surely if you want advise on buying a mini you'd go to a Mini forum. What is the point of asking on a Golf forum?
While I'm here i'm looking at a F40 and wondered what i should be looking out for on a second hand one?

My mates 09 jcw puts the power down much worse than a mk5 GTI imo after driving both. His previous 04 jcw was worse still. He's had little trouble with his current one, just the recall for fire risk a couple of electrical gremlins and squeeks and rattles. They do seem to like to ware Tyres off though which he's been told is normal.

I had a Cooper S on long term courtesy (when a driver of a Harley Davidson decided to park it into the back of my Clio 200 at crossroads). In 8 weeks, i decided that i didnt really like it all that much. Skittish, crap in wet. Fun on perfect roads in the dry, but that was it.

The Mrs had an r56 cooper s for 18 months and we were both unhappy with the car. It was problematic with the dreaded chain rattle and a noisy sunroof. This was a 2 year old car with 13k on the clock purchased from a main dealer

As for putting the power down the car was scittish and a handful, the golf drives 10 times better and is an older car.

We have a 58 plate Cooper and are not impressed with the build quality or the paint , but it does 60mpg so it keeps my ED30 under 20k still , only 78 to go though  :rolleye:

I worked for mini/bmw for 5 months this summer

The quality of them is like a crisp packet, rattle, cheap,  and not great.
I worked in the service department so did only deal with broke one's but they were always breaking down, temp sensors and dsc units are common as hell....along with the exhaust's rotting like there in salt water.
The engines pull well but as does every other 1.6 supercharged hot hatch.
I couldn't believe how crap they were, I was driving brand new loan car coopers and the window regs were squealing lights coming on the dash and even missfires on the one witch had done 72 miles when I drove it!

I wouldn't want my name on any log book with a bmw mini in sight,  I'd rather own half the ed30..
That's truth!  They were terrible!
Go have a good look around one that's been used,  they are cheap and tacky and lets still not forget it is still a women's car..that was the best bit about working there! Young girls drive them!

I didn't say anything about ripping people off. What gets me is you can play dumb to the issues with the spec until the car is sold, then as above you are happy to admit to it! Stinks if you ask me!

I'm actually going to reply to the thread and atleast give joe what he wants! Its not a technical review but my experience.

The gf had a mcs jcw before my old car was passed to her. Last summer I drove to newquay in it and I also did a bit of A-B driving in it. First the one we has was high spec, touch screen nab/radio, aux in, cruise control, xenons, retrofitted leather. There wasn't much plastic but what there was wasn't too much of an issue. The layout was the hardest thing to get use to. The newquay journey was fun. The JCW being the Ed30 of the golf world, it had more power than the s. It was rapid. It would beat a stock gti and dare i say a mapped stage 1 gti aswell. The cars soooo light which obviously helps. The handling was good and whatever I did to it, she stuck to the road. We did have aftermarket tyres but no other mods. Acceleration was good and good throughout the range. To give an example, you could be at 70 and push the accelerator a bit and your at 100 before you know it.

Inside the front two seats are fine and on my trip I had no issues. The boot is small but can fit a large black military deployment bag easily (I've tried it!). Taking passengers in the rear maybe the only downer.

People say they are all girls cars. Well yes and no. A nice jcw looks awesome. We had a black one with tints and it looked stunning regardess of who drove. You can get jcws mapped and increase performance - some are pushing just over 300bhp! The only problem I've heard about is the engine overheating and melting the front air intake but a cooler should resolve that.

There is definately more to it but I dont know what else to say! Any questions I guess?

The lad at work has one and is obsessed about them (i should not have told him I have an original mini) so I hear about nothing else at break times.
I do remeber him saying about when buying one there's two types the ones that were converted by the dealers using BMW kit rather than an original factory order one. Think he said you can tell by the bumper or exhaust it something I was not listening that much    I maybe wrong on that as was not really listening.

My first car looked identical to that , apart from the steering wheel wasnt wood. I still have a massive soft spot for the original Mini , they only look good inside with this dash though , I dont like the later Clubman style one.
