hi im new to the mk5 scene and new cars in general... not long owned the mk5 and the oil low warning light came on... checked the oil it was slightly low but not drastically low anyway i topped up the oil making sure i used the manufactures recomended oil now the oil is high on the dipstic but still the oil light is on... after looking in the handbook it says if it was a sensor problem the oil light would flash so i cant see it being the sensor but i dont reely have a clue whats up any help would be much apreciated cheers

I had the same problem. Quite common I think. Light would come on, check the level and it would be ok. Ended up changing the sensor when the car was serviced. The light is tied in with the bonnet switch. So I was opening the bonnet leaving it for a minute or so then closing again just to clear it.

Sounds like a fualty oil level sensor. Sensor is mounted on the sump..

Had the same issue with a 2006 Golf which turned out to be a faulty bonnet catch, replaced the catch and the warning light disappeared.

cheers guys does anyone know how to temperarily turn the light off at all?

Try pulling the connector off the bonnet catch and cycling the ignition and plugging back on.
As above have seen the little micro switch getting gacked up with old grease and stuff it's normally the problem if it won't go out at all
