Title: ESP and Tyre pressure warning lights both on at the same time?
Post by: CMB on December 31, 2012, 03:37:13 pm
Within about 5 minutes of setting off yesterday the ESC and tyre pressure lights came on at the same time, so i went to the nearest petrol station and checked all my tyres pressure, some were a little off so corrected them all using the auto air, got back in and reset the the pressure by holding the button in front of the gear stick until i heard the "bong" the lights didn't come on when i started the car so i thought it was all good then within another 5 minutes of driving they both came back on? Ive had a look around on the net and haven't seen much info on this? Can anyone help? Also my exhaust warning lamp came on last week but went off and hasn't been back on since, could this of just been dodgy petrol or could the two be linked and it could be something to do with the electrics? Any help would be appreciated, I'm a student so don't have a lot of money to be taking i to VW to charge me £100 just for having a look.
Cheers

There might be some fault coded stored.

When I had both the lights on together it was a wheel bearing that needed replacing.

Hiya mate, I had both these lights on a month back and it turned out to be a rear wheel sensor.got a new sensor fitted while it was been serviced. Been fine since :happy2:

Again sa lights and again wheel bearing. Becoming a commontthing. The abs ring rusts and the sensor struggles to keep a signal

I agree either a sensor or wheel bearing, ive just had this problem myself and after trying a new sensor it turned out to be a wheel bearing as the sensor ring had rusted.

You need it scanned then you know what side to check, a word of warning though buy a genuine VW sensor if you need one. As after market ones do not read correct wheel speeds.

Ditto above. If it's a sensor the speed will be out completely to other wheel speeds.

If it's the bearing the speed sensor will keep dropping speed whilst others stay at same speed I.e. I all others will be 15kmh and suddenly the dodgy side will drop to 5kmh then back up to 15kmh.

Thanks for the replies. I meant ESP, just realised now, is that what you all thought i meant anyway? If so, how much is a new sensor or bearing roughly? Cheers

A new sensor from VW is £71 roughly, and buy genuine ones as ive already said. As for bearings there are 2 sizes at 30mm and 32 mm and you dont know which size you have to you remove the old on. These are from £40 to £135 for genuine ones but replacement ones work fine.

If you are going to do it yourself you will need a M14 and M18 spline bits to remove the caliper and then the bearing. Easy to do just a bit fiddly

Hope all this helps, as me and donovan2123 have just had the same problems

Torque the hub bolt at 180nm + 180 degree extra turn. This is what's listed on auto data

Cheers lads, if its plugged into VAG-COM will that tell me exactly which wheel and what the problem is or is it not that easy?
