Hi all, me and a friend are looking to go on a snowboarding / skiing holiday in February or March and are in need of advice.
I'm 24, my only real experience of skiing was a school trip when I was 16 in Saas Grund / Saas Fee in Switzerland. Since then I've only ski'd once which was this year at the Snowdome, but I picked it back up again fairly quickly and felt confident.
My friend is confident boarder and went two years ago to Tignes.
Our first questions relate to where and when. When I went on the school trip I remember the snow at Saas grund being quite 'icey', as if it had melted and frozen again, it wasn't the best to ski on. But when we moved up the mountain to Saas Fee it was far more powder like. This was in March and the weather was fantastic, very warm and sunny. We would like to try and achieve that balance again if possible.
Location wise Andorra had been mentioned due to theory of it being good value. We need flights, accommodation, ski/board hire and a lift pass. We are also looking for somewhere with a bit of night life, something to do in the evenings.
Apologies for my vagueness and lack of knowledge
Thanks
George

I've always been skiing to Italy. Brilliant skiing, great food, crazy people and super-hot women!
Bardonecchia, Santa Caterina, Caspoggio, Aprica & Molveno are all fantastic, and in the Dolomites. Well worth taking a look, and cheaper than Austria, France & Switzerland.

The choice can be overwhelming. We normally end up getting a paper brochure, and a copy of 'where to ski and snowboard' then we are pretty ruthless with what we want. Then we go round in circles for a bit, but at the end you take a punt.
I think things are pretty competitive out there at the moment, so in my experience cost and quality are pretty closely matched. One persons cheap is another persons nasty, expensive can be ponsy. Staying in a chalet is normally quite a good deal as you normally get good food at reasonable prices.
We've gone to somewhere in France every year for the last 10 or so, I've never been skiing in Italy. I can whole heartedly recommend Val d'Isere. There's a massive range of accommodation - from cheap self-catering, loads of chalets, to super swanky hotels. What I like about it is that the town is 'real' - there are proper locals, decent bars and it looks good. The slopes are quite varied too. Its high too.
In my experience the lower the resort the poorer the snow. Portes du Soleil, can be a bit hit an miss. Significantly you might get lucky, or then again you might not. I've even skied in a t-shirt in Meribel in February...
Just take a punt on somewhere, then when you know exactly what you want the resort will choose itself!
-
Personally I prefer Austria or Italy to French resorts (less busy and not much so need to sharpen your elbows at the lifts, the french cannot queue!), if your going in MArch I would go somewhere higher (Glacier resort) to ensure good snow.
Been to Val'D myself and it was good snowboarding altho it was full of Ra' Ra's (Daddy has a ferrari don't you know!), personally I preferred Tignes (Above Val'D in same valley), if your looking for awesome Apres ski Ischgl in Austria cannot be beaten by many places altho its expensive as there are more Russian Oligarch's there than there are in Courcheval (another place I would avoid as it's stupidly expensive and makes you laugh/cry whenever you get your bill, £20 each for a baguette and orange juice at lunchtime on mountain and this was 8 years ago!!).
If you want 3 valleys France (biggest ski area), try Meribel or Val Thorens if you want 3 valleys on a budget and are no fussed about amazing nightlife try Les Menuires or Val thorens, no nightlife at all try La Tania in 3 valleys.
Les Deux Alpes is also a good bet as it has large ski area and a glacier and nightlife is ok.
Italy both Sestriere and Sauze D'oulx are good (Been twice to Sauze and once to Sestriere)
I am going to Solden (Austria) this year for my 40th with 9 friends :happy2:
-
Hi
What is your budget and can I guess that you intend to ski and not learn to board?
How good are you realistically on skis? When you say your friend is confident, again how confident?
There are many excellent resorts and I can recommend to the cows come home but if your ability is limited, you could end up paying a lot to have access to an amazing large area you will never use :P
Mat

andorra was great! :happy2:
-
Thanks for the advice all!
Budget is around £600 to include half board accommodation, flights and ski pass - if this is even possible?
I can parallel ski, turn, stop etc fairly well. My friend only went snowboarding two years ago and he's confident enough.
I understand what you're saying Mat, I remember Saas Fee being a very good mix for all abilities, but I'd probably want somewhere larger?
Thanks,
George

Its not impossible bud... but if you want a snow sure large ski area, its a bit of an ask.
Bulgaria Borovets is a nice enough notive, intermediates resort.
As are most of the places in Andorra like Soldeu.
Lavinio in Italy is also pretty good.
They have a fairly good range of runs and have a cheap night life. And are cheap to get there and stay.
For a huge Ski area.
Your £600 if you take out 6 days riding pass at a more premier resort, you are left with pretty much £400 for flights, transfer and board. That is before the over priced food and drink.
I would recommend the following.
Les Arcs in France.
Stay at a Hostel, I only ever stay at www.loftbourg.com/ (http://www.loftbourg.com/) amazing place.
Buy all your food at the supermarket
Fly there and get transfer with Coolbus www.thecoolbus.co.uk/ (http://www.thecoolbus.co.uk/)
Your looking at having paid about £170 to get there
Its 195 Euros for the week stay.
6 days lift pass is 263 Euros.
Budget 10 Euros a day for lunch or take a packed one.
Live off the Lidl Supermarket opposite the Loft, which is so cheap it will make you cry when you get home.
Party with all the Lofties every night.
That is probably the cheapest you will get a week at a decent French resort.
You wont be staying in Resort but its 5mins chair lift into the resort and has cheap beer and wine in the super markets.
In Les Arc 1800 you are looking 4-5euros a beer and shots ouch...
In Bourg St Maruice you are looking 1-3euros for a bottle of very easy to drink wine or a crate of beer.
I did a season there couple years back and spent 6 weeks there last year after I got back from my season in Utah.
Great mix of runs, the snow is usually pretty good. Even in bad years it holds the snow really well and its currently dumping out there.
Best resort personally for me in Europe is Avoriaz but that is a costly place to go play. With the port du soleil pass its a huge crazy area of fun :)
Alternately.. Look out for last minute catered chalet deals. If you can get one of them you are set... but they are around £700-1000 at the mo for decent large area resorts..
I am sure people will be able to find you cheaper places than I know but I tend to follow the snow and the runs.... I have been to some smaller resorts and been bored silly of them in a couple of days :P
Keep ESF out of the park
-
Wow, thanks for the comprehensive reply Mat, I'll take a more in depth read tonight.
Maybe something like this is a better idea, saving money with a last minute holiday and going the middle to end of this month:
http://www.igluski.com/saas-fee/chalet-hotel-ambassador_p20392?holidayid=41073940#
Includes flights and transfers and has good reviews on trip advisor.
I obviously need to do a lot more research and get a better understanding of what we want out of the trip.
My friend doesn't need to hire any gear, and he said he can go to £700 maximum for accommodation, flights, transfers and ski pass
What does ESF mean? :scared:
-
ESF - French Ski School .. Gapers always hang around on the landings or block the kickers :P
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lecorbier.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fesf1.jpg&hash=36ac97e20ec9be6f102ee40023e6a916bd929165)
Never been to Saas Fee but if the snow is ok then yeah looks good. Catered Chalets are awesome and usually good enough to party in every night anyway. ( Although they usually have Wednesday or Thursday off, so budget in a restaurant meal as well ).
Just you really need to budget in the food and drink. If you want to get on it every night you need to easily budget for about £40-50 a night.. You will get so dicked in a resort bar its untrue :P
Don't forget you need to get ski holiday insurance and make sure it covers you for off piste. Even if you are not going back country, if you ride outside of the pisted runs and hurt yourself its technically off piste and you can end up being screwed by the insurance companies.
-
Are catered chalets just chalets with half board meals?
Great tip regarding the ski insurance,
Thanks for everyone's advice and patience, it's all helping us!
-
Yeah pretty much.
Breakfast and dinner.
Usually cake and tea for when you arrive back from the slopes.
And as much wine as you can drink in the evening.
Plus you usually end up sitting with everyone else so its way more social than hotels.
-
Livigno in Italy has a 4 to 4.5hr coach transfer tho from memory?
-
If you do go to Andorra pas de la casa check out the Font D'Argent Hotel.
We stayed there last Easter and it was way better than any we had stayed at before. Lost of places in pas are low standard catering for the very young. This is perfectly located and right next to all the nightlife.
Personally though I would not go back to Andorra due to the limited uplift but having now had 4 holidays there 3 guys only and 1 family I have done my dash there.
Meribel in the 3 vallies may be a good choice though if you are beginners it's a tough descent back home, courchevel (my once area of choice) is fooked due to ridiculously wealthy Russians its really no place for yer average Brit nowadays, tho we did stay in a good and superbly located hotel through inghams. Hotel Anemones.
St Anton, austria is a good mix of night life and great skiing.
Went to sestriere hotel du col last year have to say I loved it as prices were not stupid on the slopes for food. 3eu for two coffees on the slopes.
Go high is my main advice though. 2000m if you can.
-
Borovets in Bulgaria is sh*t! I wouldnt go there again if it was free!
Im actually off to Mayrhofen tomorrow for a week. Thats costing £640 all in (lift pass, flights, fully catered chalet accommodation with sauna etc. I booked for a whole group of people so got a bit of a discount.
If your after somewhere to party you cant do much better than st anton. Went there last year and its great. Good skiing and good apres.
Andorra is nice but if your in any of the towns other than pas de l casa then its a bit quiet at night. Its also hit and miss on snow I found as its so far south and not a very high resort. Went in feb once and ended up sun bathing.
Also avoid france... biggest problem with france... THE FRENCH... rude obnoxious people. Italy they are much more polite but then ive not been to an italian resort that has great night life.
Id say austria is your best bet.
-
^^^^ avoid France :signLOL: i have just got back from the alps in France and i go once or twice a year and i have never had a problem with the French i have seen worse attitudes in London being honest.Get yourself over to Chamonix next month as it will be great and its got plenty of slopes in the local area for everything from beginner to doing black runs and its easy to get to just drive down in your car thats what i do

Off to Avoriaz in 5 weeks :)

No need to be offensive. We have French members on this website. I'd say they wouldn't take too kindly to those sort of comments.

We (10 of us) are off to Solden (Austria) in Early April (for my 40th) 2 cars driving out there (4 in each car) and 2 flying out to stay with us for 3 nights (my brother and one of our mates) we got a 3 bedroom SC apartment for £800 which sleeps 8 (Altho only 4 of us staying in it so we have a room each including sofa bed in the lounge which is handy for my best mate as he is one of them weirdos that can only sleep with the TV on , this also saves us having to remove the plug from the TV upon arrival at hotels!! which is what we normally have to do!! ) and the other 4 are staying in a 2 bedroom apt that sleeps 6 (they paid £675).
The cost of eurotunnel and fuel will be around £85-90 each so all in for less than £300 each for us and less than £270 each for the other 4, benefit of driving means we can take more stuff with us (stopping at a french Hypermarket for food/drinks etc) plus travelling out on Saturday and returning Sunday means we get a full 7 days on the slopes rather than the usual 6 days (maybe 6 days + a morning if your lucky with flight times), full 7 days lift pass is £215
Last time we did it we each put £60 in the kitty and that covered food and drinks for the apt for all of us for the week :happy2:
Doing it on a budget this year so more could come, had we been flying and hotel only 4 of us could have made it due to the cost.
Had we been doing it without budget restrictions we would have gone to Ischgl as it is the best place for Apres we have ever been to (including St Anton AA), altho like courcheval it is also frequented by the Russian Oligarchs' altho they all tend to stay at far end of town in the 5* hotels and frequent the bars under the hotels leaving the central resort for everyone else :happy2:
I am with you on Avoid France (there are still a few resorts where it's OK but the main resorts are full of arrogant french) I am sure the french are a great bunch of people ,it's just on ski slopes they turn into tools?!, good tip for France is to sharpen your elbows for the lift queues.
Andorra is great for teenagers/early 20's and cheap too.
Italy is good, quieter than france and good food but nightlife not as good.

Ahh, a blanket statement, that's OK then :stupid:
For what it's worth I go to France maybe twice a year (although its been less in recent years). My parents have a place in Argentiere, five minutes up the road from Chamonix. I can honestly say, in the 15 years or so I've been going I've never encountered any hostility from the French. Quite the opposite in fact. They always seem genuinely interested when talking to you and they're always incredibly helpful.
-
You get arrogant people everywhere.. The UK is pretty bad to be honest... I never really noticed it until I moved back from living in the states... We are horrid :P
The French can be a little arrogant but I have never had any problem with them and if you try to speak French you get a much much better response, even if you are terrible at it like me :P
The only place I have had issues with French people is in Paris.. but then even the French don't like Parisians !
Lift Queues can be a little hostile but ha.. Man up ;)
On the slopes, locals always think they have right of way.. its human nature and the majority of the French you meet will be up from the surround areas and it is "their" resort..
I am just as bad when I season and have to deal with punters :P Some people should not be allowed on snow ;)

Beware the Bruce!

The hotel staff have always been helpfull (altho apart from the manager they seem to be mainly slovenian/slovakian etc), Les Deux Alpes was pretty friendly altho crap for snowboarders unless your very quick and can flatboard for upwards of 1/4+ mile (generally uphill :fighting:), the red runs there include many uphill sections so for one or two of my mates who are only on 2nd or 3rd year they could not manage the whole uphill/flat bits (I was OK as I tend to flatboard quite often anyway, benefit of doing it for 18/19 years :happy2:), would not like to think what the greens were like (never went on them, genrally stay on red/black with the occasional blue for meandering back at end of the day! when legs are tired )
Also worth getting are one of the free mountain apps on Iphone, logs your speed using GPS, distance travelled, number of runs, vertical descents etc, managed 103kmh in march last year on a quiet day coupled with 27 runs (Not bad for a slow snowboarder as some of my skier mates said, altho the fastest of them only managed 108kmh)

Yeah its a bit of a generalisation.... French are ok :) one of my best friends is so french most people dont understand him...
French in snowboard resorts are particularly arsey though.

I think (like someone else said) the French do have an annoying habit of loitering/stopping on landing areas or right in front of kickers :fighting:
I once wiped out a French skier mid air (I was about 4ft off the ground at the time of impact) as she was stood below a marked jump on her phone (we both had some bruises but her phone died that day!) :fighting: her husband started throwing abuse at me (and a few punches), only when he was sat down () did he understand/realise that it was his wifes fault for standing there, he then started shouting at her at which point I went on my way down the piste.
-
When I was in Les Arcs last year hitting the Derby run, there is a lovely little hit on the left just before it drops into the final run to the chair lift..
A family of French were standing around in front of it, I set my line and just as I was committed the Dad sets off without looking up slope ( Breaking his own skiers code, Naughtly ), so i had no option but to ollie over the front of his skies and then hit the jump. This all went very smoothly, till I looked up and saw this guy speeding after me.. So I stopped he got all up in my face, screaming at me in French.. So I pushed him over and unclipped Shirt off, Throw down mode This shocked him and he quickly got up and vanished away.. I very rarely get angry enough to do that but just his attitude, that his lack of awareness was MY fault, raged me!
If you ever want to see Skiers vs Boarders. Hike Baldy in Snowbird and drop into Alta! Alta is a skiers only resort and they do not like the seeing us drop in higher then their highest chair goes, makes them MAD So funny!

March 16th Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, France!!! We will be there again its an awesome resort and the weather is usually good in March.
You can ski Val d'Isere aswell with the full L'Espace Killy ski pass so theres loads of choice.
I started here as a beginner and its not the easiest of places but you will be fine.
Get down the Chillfactore in Manchester beforehand if you're close by!
Whatever you decide. Happy Skiing!!!

One of the lads who is coming with us has only been once before (December last year) and decideed he was sick of being left behind (and us shouting hurry up all day ) so he has just done 2 full days at Chill factor having 8 x 1 hour long private lessons over the 2 days, he says we should not have to wait too long now :signLOL:

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'm making notes of everything :happy2:
We'll try and get a accomodation, flights and transfers package. I would drive but it's a pain in the arse depending on 97Ron fuel and my mate drives a 350z which is neither pratical or good in the ice.
We are aiming to go the last two weeks of January or the first two weeks of March
So far our shortlist of countries / resorts consists of:
Andorra
Soldeu
Pas de la casa
France
Serre Chevalier
Les Arcs
La Plagne
Val d'Isere
Tignes
Courchevel
Meribel
Val Thorens
Les Deux Alpes
Avoriaz
Chamonix
Italy
Cervinia
Bardonecchia
Santa Caterina
Caspoggio
Aprica
Molveno
Sestriere
Switzerland
Saas Fee
Austria
Ischgl
St Anton
Mayrhofen
Solden
Our main factors to consider seem to be:
Price of accommodation/flights/transfer
Price of food and drink within the resort
Altitude of Resort (Minimum peak altitude 2000m)
Transfer time from airport to resort
How well the slopes are suited to our ability
Nightlife
Locality of accommodation to slopes
Tour operators we will be comparing:
Igluski
Neilson
Crystal
Inghams
If anyone can add to any of the above lists or dismiss any of the suggested resorts I’d appreciate it. It’s all helping us greatly!

Serre Chevalier Great skiing especciallly if there is powder and like being in the trees
Les Arcs
La Plagne
Val d'Isere very pricy for drinks at night and was full of Ra-ra's (It was when we went anyway, there were 53 of us so we pretty much took over a corner of a bar and made our own night :happy2:
Tignes Access to Val D'Isere slopes but cheaper
Courchevel Full of wealthy russians with model wives
Meribel little cheaper than courcheval and less russians
Val Thorens good resort and great off piste of there is powder
Les Deux Alpes good resort not too pricey but lots of flat areas on the runs, many of them are no fun (walking) unless your really quick
Avoriaz
Chamonix
Italy
Cervinia
Bardonecchia
Santa Caterina
Caspoggio
Aprica
Molveno
Sestriere see below
Sauze D'oulx Usually cheap deals can be found and good resort and you can ski to sestriere on other side of mountain assuming the red run is open as it is on the sunny side and is uaully the 1st run to close due to lack of snow, you can still get lift over and ski all over sestriere tho!
Switzerland
Saas Fee
Austria
Ischgl Awesome nightlife including several top nightclubs including "Pascha" under the Hotel Madlein (Club "Post" is also good under "Hotel Post"), also attached to the side of Pascha is a "Coyote Ugly" strip joint my best mate insisted on going in for a look (there is a door to access coyote direct from Pascha) he bought a 150 Euro bottle of champage and was very quickly covered in strippers vying for his money, I had 2 drinks and went back into Pascha :happy2:, for apres you cannot beat "Schatzi" under Hotel Elizabeth, great music, good atmosphere and dancing girls on the bar and the DJ is open to suggestions for music too :happy2:, unfortunately its a very expensive place to go to thanks to those russians, order 2 double vodka and cokes on 1st night and it was £28, ordered singles after that
St Anton
Mayrhofen
Solden am told it is a cheaper version of Ischgl without Pascha nightclub
Our main factors to consider seem to be:
Price of accommodation/flights/transfer

Doesn't seem to be many comments on bulgaria? is it a right off? - looks pretty dammn cheap!
My friend leaves for france in the morning, ill let you know where he went and how he got on :happy2:
Ive always much fancied snowboarding over skiing myself, any avid boarders out there?
:)
-
He will soon be Dusting heads I guess

Today we are trying to make a shortlist, taking various factors into consideration. One factor that's stumbled us is the Piste lengths in kms. They seem to range from as little as 100km to 1200km.
What would be the minimum for a good week for an intermediate boarder and skier? We would like to try a range of slopes and then probably stick to one or two favourites
Thanks
George

Well we haven't been able to make as much progress today as hoped, but we did decide to knock Andorra, France and Switzerland off the list. France and Switzerland due to price, and Andorra due to, well, we just want to go to the alps!
We are now stuck between Italy and Austria. We have decided we want to stay in a Half Board hotel rather than a self catered chalet due to not knowing who we may end up sharing the chalet with, and not having a choice of food.
Budget for accommodation, flights and transfers is strictly £550, absolute maximum.
Where would you recommend?
Thanks!
