Robin,

Can my friend with his Citroen AX GT run?

....When I first read the word "Citroen" I was hoping that you meant one of these............

http://www.streetfire.net/video/2cv-nimik-with-ferrari-engine_684670.htm

But I don't see why not. Is it heavily modified? 300bhp AX GT go-kart?

What's his first name? Or Citroen forum name if he prefers? 'Golf Slayer'?

Yes it is modified... ;-) Think Jim will be mapping it anyway... But would like to come along if OK? His name is Martin...

....As it's FWD he won't have to go the rollers last as all RWD runners will have to.

However, this Dyno-Day is for two forums and it would be very unfair if any forum member of either here or Briskoda, was denied a place because of numbers.

So for now, I'll say he can go on a Reserve list. I need his name please, Ian.

Boooooooo! FWD only - it's racist against us 4WD car owners :signLOL:

....I have spoken with JKM about this and there are two reasons why they are unwilling to dyno a Haldex equipped car on their 2WD rollers:

1) - The bhp will not be reliably true in JKM's opinion.

2) - Removing the Haldex fuse potentially may cause overheating and they understandably do not want to take responsibility for any possible damage to someone's car.

I have heard JKM's rollers described as "heartbreakers" but I tend to think of them as accurate and. like Oli is doing, using JKM on more than one occasion helps establish what various mods can contribute, as well as being a general health check.

Looking forward to seeing what the intercooler and stage2+ will give over the 309bhp I got before on stage2...

I doubt the intercooler will give you any gains on the dyno. The huge fans at JKM keep an OEM intercooler cool enough

The air isn't particularly that warm at the moment so you will have to wait for the summer for decent gains from an IC

As Hedge said  :happy2:

Intercoolers only make a difference when air temp is high and the car is driven hard. On a dyno the amount of air focused at the intake and IC will be enough to make the OEM intercooler work effectively. Especially as its still winter (although quite a mild one)

You will, however notice reduced inlet temps on the road on a hot day so should maintain the power you have in the winter ( if that makes sense)

GarethB on here got no gains at all from running a twintercooler on JKM's, compared to a run without it fitted

Lol, no, I was just asking for clarification as it says max 40 here but on the briskoda link it says max 30. I thought it was usually 30.

....Kate @ JKM suggested we combine with Briskoda and she suggested that a 40 max would be okay. Yes, it is usually 30 max but I think that as JKM are freeing up a Saturday by combining the two forums, they're happy to make one longer one.

And I'm very disappointed that you aren't bringing lots of hot female friends for the Voyeurs amongst us (as listed). Of course, I'm not interested in being a Voyeur.

I doubt the intercooler will give you any gains on the dyno. The huge fans at JKM keep an OEM intercooler cool enough

Interestingly my stg1 Revo GTI with a stock intercooler was showing intake temps up in the 40s on a JKM day last year (it was early in the year and mighty cold - hovered around freezing I recall), yet on the way back doing the best "dyno-simulation" I could, the intake temperatures were at worst high 20s.

Fans are good, but natural airflow certainly seems to assist my car greatly.

I'd imagine a decent 'cooler would assist a bit on the dyno.

------------------------

Back on topic, it doesn't look like anyone is running RWD which is a shame. I'd be tempted to bring something other than my MK5 if there was a group of RWD too.

If you want to go on then put your name down and hope your car is fixed in time. I'm pretty sure if you cancel at the last minute, a reserve (none yet I agree) would take your place on the day.

Shame you can't make it Nodz...

My mate Martin got his can mapped upto 18psi on Wednesday, so even not fully mapped it should make some decent power... mappers rollers showed 310bhp... :signLOL:

Rocco made 172.5bhp and 271lb/ft  :jumpmove:

Was probably the only car on the day that made more than expected  - after they managed to dyno the car as the ABS kept putting it into limp mode as it wasn't happy the rear wheels weren't turning

Was great to catch up with the usuals and meet a few others. 7hrs of driving well worth it.  :happy2:

Think my S3 Alloy intercooler and changing settings from B8T5F7 to B8T6F8 would give me 10bhp on its own?

Great turnout today, nice to See Mr Mk5golfgti head honcho Mr Pound, and brought along HRH QD in the company transport which left everyone's jaw including mine on the deck in this beauty, certainly made my Gutless sounding Ed30 sound insignificant

Massive  turnout and only 1 no show , some great selection of cars including a bonkers show stopping Citroen AX GT Sprint car being my highlight..300bhp and 800kg's, and that was running in 6th to help try stopping it from wheel spinning in 5th :surprised:. 100 shot Nos and water meth were also turned off    totally bonkers..

thanks again to those involved in arranging on both Briskoda and here for arranging. Food was superb and more then just biscuits were on offer, cakes a plenty..

Glad you liked my Mates Citroen Ax, and thanks for making him feel welcome...

It's got plenty of scope yet, loads more timing, WMI should take it to 400bhp, and then a 100shot of nos on top! It's mentally quick out on the road...

Cheers For a good day! Good to see some regular faces and meet some new ones...

Dom

Romany had a new Sachs clutch fitted last Saturday and had Revo stage 2 put on, settings not optimised yet as still bedding the clutch in.

The moral of my day was that 'improvement' tweaks can be costly....opening up the closed-canister ITG intake on the TSI to make it an open filter for more air only succeeded in screwing up the airflow over the MAF and cost me 30 horses  :surprised:  Went from 357 bhp a few weeks ago to 331  :ashamed:  I'll stop meddling in the future!

I'm sorry, but I think JKM have gone too far in the wrong direction. I know I'm making a little bit of an assumption, but cheungys figure is well below where it should be given that he made over 380bhp last week at Awesome GTI. My car made 10bhp more than his and on that basis mine would only make 345bhp, which is 5bhp less than it would make at Statllers. Given that Statllers dyno ran a 525bhp Audi R8 V10 recently that only made 430bhp I'd say JKM is simply too low! Add to that the even lower runs this time than last time with no real reasoning, something is amiss!

How come you've got a BYD engine rather than BWA?

Did you do a complete engine swap with K04 rather than just do a K04 turbo swap on your original 182bhp engine?

Me & mate did the conversation for the K04...

BYD? my BWA Engine (108K) broke! Piston rings apparently (0 Zero Compression from 3rd piston champer)

What Rich says.  All figures from yesterday need to be taken as a pinch of salt.  Everyone had lost power from previous sessions on the same rollers.  Says it all really.

Nothing wrong with anyones cars.  Dawain, your boost is perfect.  Logs show that everything is 100%.

Sounds to me that the loading wasnt right on the dyno and the cars were not requesting full load.

When a stage 1 Revo car makes 300bhp yesterday on Dynodaze's rollers then I suspect JKM's are off.

Yeah Mandy said some of the standard cars were making what they should power wise...

The variation in Dawains runs was odd, 282bhp one run then 298 another?

JKM making us spend money.

Revo have asked me to call them following posting on there Facebook page...

well mine made less on 2+ then it did on stage 2 done some loggin last nite and alex said all seems fine so now im baffled and dunno what 2do  :fighting: :fighting: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

Ignore the dyno...

But Dawain is running stage 2+ and made 298bhp, same stage as Dom who made 318bhp. I'm on stage 2 but made more than Dawain's. IIRC Dawain's made ~304bhp on JKM's rollers a couple of years ago on stage 2. All very confusing lol...

Thats not uncommon. Every time mine has been dynod it has done 10bhp less on one run than the other.

SRR.... 289 on the first run and 279ish on the second run.

Yep... just ignore it mate, it was obviously reading low. Mine did 289 at Surrey rolling road, so you cant tell me that from stage 1 to stage 2+ you only gain 10 bhp.

to convert MAF readings into approximate BHP figures divide the g/s value by 0.8, or multiply is by 1.25, both give the same result.

120 g/s divided by 0.8 gives 150bhp for a standard A3. 160g/s or there abouts for a mapped A3

168 g/s divided by 0.8 gives 210 bhp for a standard S3. 200g/s or there abouts for a mapped S3

You usually won't see those exact figures of course, but that's the ball park you're after

Stolen from another forum...Hope this helps ;)

Your 3rd gear runs show a peak of 267 g/s.

4th gear would show slightly more, and this figure doesnt take into account advanced timing etc. Hence why its a rough guide.

My car would show 250 g/s which on the dyno made 355. Im now seeing 280 g/s since then after playing with a few things.

I was down 6hp on my ABF from last month at another RR event there, and the only thing I've done since was new cold air intakes which should have seen a very slight improvement, oh and new plugs and oil...

I know 6hp is not much compared to you guys running boost and other fancy stuff, but my car has always been very consistent at JKM's rollers and out of 4 or 5 times I've been there I've always seen an improvement over the time before, except once when I knew what the problem was, so I do think the rollers were under reading on Saturday.

....To be fair, John, you have already been given the exact reasons why JKM don't run '4WD' Haldex on their rollers and also why they don't take the risk of running Nitrous cars when there are so many people attending who potentially might be injured if things went wrong.

We all know that Dyno results are a bit of a lottery, so why do some folks start bitching when they don't get the numbers they wanted to see.
Title: Re: JKM Dyno-Day - 2nd March....
Post by: Hurdy on March 04, 2013, 06:08:44 pm
LOL, I thought I was being fair Robin.

I agree that dyno results are lotteries, but there are quite a few who have changed parts/upgraded/done nothing at all, that have ended up with lower results from last time they were at JKM. Like you have always said, you go to JKM so you can directly compare your results and yet you aren't able to compare the current results to last time as you are down on power, but haven't got anything wrong!

A company cannot bang on about how accurate their dyno is and then have swings in bhp outputs on several cars that are healthy. Any other companies dyno would be slated for it yet JKM simply gets the thumbs up/head in the sand syndrome.

JKM are a premier company and their dyno needs to be too. If it isn't 100% and they know, or they have altered any parameters, then they should own up and let people know.

....Firstly, my comment to you about being fair was in response to what you posted about '4WD' Haldex and Nitrous. You are forgetting what you had been previously informed about JKM's policy regarding both '4WD' Haldex and Nitrous. If you recall, I specifically asked Jim at JKM about these policies and reported back to you directly what he had said.

In my case, I'm down on power because, as my plots showed, my AFR and boost was erratic.

I'm not forgetting Robin, I was making light of it as it is no biggie :happy2: I understand perfectly what JKM's policies are and I appreciate them, but don't have to agree with them.

AFR and boost being irratic may have been your issue (although I think you had a 20bhp loss didn't you?) but others had similar losses and even went to higher states of tune, knew their cars felt faster, yet had lower dyno readings.

I'm just asking the questions and don't expect anyone to be able to pinpoint them, just highlighting them as I see them.

IMO Robin, regular dyno days are good as they have shown up a potential problem... But would that problem be their if the RR was set up and loading the car right!? The ecu work on how they are being loaded... If you have not noticed a change out on the road, then what's to say there is a problem...

I'm not bitching, just concerned that I have spent a lot of money to get somewhere, and I'm apparently not there, or am I, and if I'm not, why am I not... I'm an engineer, if something's doesn't work, I wanna know why and how I can make it... But when it involves spending more money, of which the parts I have added should be giving me the results I want and are not then I have to question how they are being measured... I need to know what's causing this, as other have had better results with similar specs...

I'm even attending another rR day this Saturday to help me gauge this...

Would like to get to the bottom it... To only gain 9.3bhp over stage 2 is a bit of a let down, but there's many factors behind it I'm sure...

I'm like you, Dom, in that if something is appearing to be not working as it should, then I want to know why so that steps can be taken to solve it.  :happy2:

Consequently, in my particular case, because JKM know my car so well and have literally years of logs, I shall be asking Jim to do some logging when she is is there for her next service.

Meanwhile, she is feeling just as responsive as ever to drive. On JKM's rollers she has always fluctuated between about 250 and 270 bhp and always with smooth curves.

This is the main reason I have never made the 200+ mile trip down to one of JKM's days tbh.. Even though I have been tempted soooo many times to come down (mainly to see all you boys), I just know I would of felt like I had just chucked money down the drain..

I appreciate JKM have different methods when running cars and how they strap them down etc, but at the end of the day, it seems to be JKM figures against every other RR in the UK pretty much (apart from the odd 'happy' dynos).
For a car to be 50bhp down between Awesome's Dyno and JKM's within a couple of weeks is ridiculous IMO (unless suffering severe running issues, which is would appear not). Awesome may run some laughable torque and WHP figures sometimes, but the clutch bhp figures have always been fairly on par with most Dyno Dynamics rollers when the same car has been run on both.

Also, I have never known so many cars to have "running issues" when on JKM's RR days..

I agree. Mine made more than stock figures on a stock engine.

I've said this at least twice in this post

Last time James got 378bhp and 450ft/lb - exactly the same as on R-Techs rollers

Both Muckipup and Robin can justify their figures too. . .

I know my car is only Stage 1 Graeme, but Revo quote 260 Bhp and 285 lb/ft in their brochure for my car at Stage 1. So 232 can't be right can it? It got 253 at Storm Developments, and their RR has to be within 1 per cent accuracy as it's used for race cars.

In all honesty 260 has never ever ever been seen on a stage one GTI (on any rollers - except AMD's  ). Its been well discussed on here that Tuners advertise the highest believable figure to sell their products.

Even 253bhp sounds very optimistic tbh  :surprised:

Yours was bang on the money for stage one, have a look on JKM's website - most of them make about 235bhp. Last time some poor lad only got 221bhp at stage one.

My stg1 GTI made 248bhp at R-Tech (with pre-cat removed) and 241bhp at JKM, which isn't a million miles away. Nick & R-tech only gets around high 230's / low 240's on his dyno @ stage one (with pre-cat present)

I bet you weren't far off the 285lb/ft though?

As Robin said, your curves are great and it drives well on the road. It's the area under the curve which is important and the reason it drives so well on the road  :happy2:

I'm not defending JKM as they always seem lower (whether by a bit or a lot) than other tuners. Other dyno operators have suggested JKM use strange settings on the dyno (sorry I don't understand the detail to go into it  ) which may be why tuned cars read low but stock cars don't.

The Haldex situation seems strange as other DD operators can manage it with no problems - again, I'm no expert but other tuners with many years of experience are doing Haldex cars sucessfully.

I'm in no position to question the competency of a garage so I'm not going to  :chicken:

SRR use TN:3.541

It's something to so with the inertia setting

It's not mentioned specifically on the graph (like power is), you have to read it off the scale. Something around the 270lb/ft mark with a peak earlier than your power will be your torque curve  :happy2:
Title: Re: JKM Dyno-Day - 2nd March....
Post by: rtechniki on March 05, 2013, 10:12:14 pm
Your cars are the biggest factor for number deviations not the dynos...  (But dynos are reading just stupid...)

Your TFSI monsters have 100s of correction maps which basically mean the car will run full power at x air temp, x coolant temp, x egt temp with x amount of timing retard.   A car on a dyno with a very slow ramp rate will hit  its target load quicker and get hotter faster and end up lot hotter during the power run so the correction maps can easy eat away at 6.4% of the power from running 40-50deg air temp at the manifold vs  a correction of zero from running between -9ded - 30deg AIT.    Run the same car on a dyno with a very fast ramp rate then the temps and timing pull will be alot lower so the car will run its optimised power from mapping.

The only way to get a true idea of what going on during a power run is log the AIT, corrected load request and timing corrections.

Kennfeld Maximal fuellung Ansaugluft-Temperatur Korrekturfaktor
Map maximum charge air intake temp correction factor

Just the one map above could eat away at 40% of the power is the AITs go above 80deg....

So to sum up, your maps are not one setting for power / load output.
I hope this sheds some light on the dyno debate and I agree with Hurdy and the term Dyno Lottery..lol

Lol the usual 1% accuracy because we tune race cars quote......  No such thing dude, the closest word u can say to accurate is "realistic".   There is not one chassis dyno in the land which is accurate are there are so many factors to take into account, one being correction factors applied the the readings based on atmospheric conditions, there are around 6 factors which can be used which on a 200bhp run can vary the power between 7bhp -/+.

In that case there must be a particularly nasty adverse conditions vortex surrounding JKM's dyno where all the negative forces come together to create the "Low" dyno. On the 2nd of March there must have been "Perfect Storm" conditions. LOL

Only way to find out what is going in on is log the cars on the dyno..  MAF LOAD AIT TIMING ect..

I am saying the factors are..

Coolant temp  a variation 98deg+ will make ecu reduce power up 40% reduction
AIR intake temp anything over 40deg+ will make ecu reduce power 40% reduction
Correction factors for atmos
cold bearing and drive train temps on the DD rollers will give a lower reading on the est hp
Fuel quality

JKM's dyno is repeatable.
The most important element of any calibration/measurement is a repeatable and reproducible measurement so monitor your vehicles on one dyno only, then you'll be able to track changes with success.
If you keep changing the measurement device looking for the most favorable figures you won't know where you are.

Repeatable...? Ok so Revo Stage 2+ is worth 9bhp over stage 2 then...

My standard car, was given Revo Stage 1 treatment by APD Performance (now VAS Works) settings B7T5F9. Made 288bhp on JKMs rollers.

Added a Pipewerx 3” DP and 200Cel Sports cat and stage 2 software, settings B7T5F9 and made 272bhp on JKMs Rollers.

JKM then added an APR Fuel Pump, EVOMS induction kit and BCS 3” Cat back sports exhaust and setting B8T5F7 made 309bhp on JKM rollers. . Later on changed to B8T5F8 as I was getting quite a lot of soot deposits on the bootlid.

An S3 intercooler was fitted, and JKM put Stage2+ file on with settings B8T5F8.

Paul at VAS Works logged the car Thursday 28th Feb 2013 and tweak settings to B8T6F8. Was meeting all requested values. March 2nd 2103 car makes 318bhp on JKM rollers.

Car is run exclusively on V-Power. Serviced every 6-8k miles. Has a Rev G diverter valve which is in good condition still and the latest revision coilpacks and PCV valve. It was service at the beginning of February. Also has a Sachs uprated (400lbft) clutch and new DMF.

Revo have had this information and have not got back to me...

Why u looking at peak numbers?   I would be happy spending £500 to gain 8bhp "peak". But gaining 30-45lbft across the midrange to give greater average power / area under the curve.    These sort of power gains can only be see if your running your car on the same dyno and over laying graphs each time you make changes to your car.

A rr day will only give u one 2 reading peak torque and peak hp at there relative rpm points.   Red robin is happy with his car as he had 100s (lol) of dyno plots from the same dyno showing where each mod has made / lost power.

Dynos are tools for tuning, safe logging and to visualise whats going on with the mapping.  They where never build for rr days.

As for peak Bhp being the buzz number we all chase... What other number can we quote to give an indication of power?

We need to find some mad mathematically geek who will revolutionise the way we look at and brag about power.

A system is needed to work out a new reading which is based on the area under the power curves the area between peak hp and peak torque changed in to volume of power.   The car with most volume will have most power.

I would love to work out an equation for this...  But I is thick as pig sh*t with maths.

Shall we have just a TFSI only RR day??  £25 for 2 power runs and 1 full load eddy current brake pull to work engine to the max??

The equation isnt the problem... its the problem that the RR graphs are not accurate enough to take readings.

This is what you need to do..... but you cannot read the bhp scale accurately enough. So take the readings from where the vertical lines meet the bhp line and divide by the number of readings... 10 in the case below

Rough average is 207bhp... not as impressive as 289

Isn't it just the average over a set number of samples?
2,000 RPM - 5,000 RPM
Sample data each 100 RPM
Plot data
Divide by 300 (number of Samples)
=
Gower Power

Probably wrong.

Can't say I've seen a gain in torque from stage 2 tbh... Oh well nevermind, i'm sure with all the suspension on it'll be awesome fun and look loads better lol :rolleye:

That's the sort of idea I had.  :congrats:

If the Gower power reading is sampled at every 250rpm from the torque curve between peak lbft and HP  then we can work from to get the reading in hp using the 5252 rule.

I would be good to get all dyno sw to work out these number instantly

Nick... do dynos output data? Or do they just draw the graph and thats that?

If yours outputs data... a simple excel page will do it.

I think mine will give all reading is CSV format or raw text?  I will see what options I have.

CSV would be good. Have a look... im sure there will be a way to process the data to output the average bhp between peak torque and maximum bhp  :happy2:

I will get the data from your last run at the charity rr day ;-)

And as I came up with idea of volume based bragging right I want it to be called "Gower Power". Lol

;-)

Shall we have just a TFSI only RR day??  £25 for 2 power runs and 1 full load eddy current brake pull to work engine to the max??

I'm up for another dyno day at yours Niki. :happy2:

May have to have a quiet word with you too!

Not a bad idea that! It gives a more realistic view of the flexibility and true performance of the car. I think it may need a little tweaking though as some cars like the K04 can have fairly late peak torque and early power peak, whereas a K03 can have a very early torque peak and a high power peak depending on mods.

I'd say the reasonable sample would be 2.5krpm to 6.5krpm, that way the useful rev range is covered and any anomalies at the lower and upper parts of the rev range are eliminated. 17 samples in all. This could be further tweaked for big turbo applications where the rev range is higher and 19 or 21 or 23 samples could be taken. This way it would also reflect not just on the power, but the flexibility of the car and how fast it is in the real world. Any good?

Im guessing Hurdy's quiet word goes like this "hi Nicki, how do you get 400+bhp out of a K04?"

Mine and Romany's graphs:

Romany had a new Sachs clutch fitted last Saturday and had Revo stage 2 put on, settings not optimised yet as still bedding the clutch in.

How did a stage 2 not optimised beat my stage 2+ ?? ive got all supporting mods for 2+ and running B8 T5 F6
