Post by: oak_grun on January 06, 2013, 04:08:49 pm
Hi, I'm currently looking to upgrade the standard front brakes and have been offered some Brembo Porsche caliper's.

Part No.996.352.421 & 996.352.422

Will they fit?

Cheers

So the correct ones have 351 in the part number?
Which year and model do the correct caliper's come from out of interest?

Thanks

986.351.422

IIRC the NQS BBK Calipers are from the Porsche Boxster 2.5 & 2.7.

Taken from DaveB's thread....

The part numbers you need are 986 351 421 & 422

Just a brief explanation of part numbers:

First three are the model number 986=Boxster, 996=911, 955=Cayenne

351 = Front brakes

421 Left Caliper (odd numbers) & 422 Right Caliper (Even numbers)

Dont buy anything with a 352 in the part number they are rear calipers and the pistons are too small for a Mk5

I run the 996 calipers that you have been offered, run with a 330mm Mercedes disc and they are immense. Really good stopping power!

What sort of size spacers do you need with the 996 calipers and merc set up ?

15mm on 17" monza

15mm on 17" monza

Is there not a rubbing issue if you use such a thick spacer at the front?

I have -45mm Eibach springs - and drive like a bit of a lunatic when out on my own in the country...and If I catch a bump mid corner when really loaded up - it will catch slightly, but nothing to worry about...ot that you can see the result of on either tyre or arch liner or wing.

Yeah i run 15mm spacers on my 18" Pescara's. Lowered on KW V1's and only rubs when your proper on it.  :happy2:

piston sizes of Stoptech ST-40 BBK:

Quote
It's 34 mm and 38 mm.

So let's do the math:

Pi * radius² = area

908 mm² + 1134 mm² = 2043 mm²

stock Ate FN3 54 caliper = 2290 mm²

So the Stoptech ST-40 seems to be a good match.  :happy2: Keep in mind
a BBK also provides better pad pressure distribution and larger rotor size.

Cayenne brakes aren't (there are three):

34/36/38 mm : 907.920 + 1017.876 + 1134.115 = ~ 3060 mm²
32/36/38 mm : 804.248 + 1017.876 + 1134.115 = ~ 2956 mm²
30/34/38 mm : 706.858 + 907.920 + 1134.115 = ~ 2749 mm²

.... obviously Cayenne/Touareg/Q7 calipers WILL increase pedal travel (without a
much larger master cylinder) and weaken both brake force distribution, pedal feel
and booster/brake assist functionality. At least LHD Golfs/GTIs have a dual rate
booster and such significiently different pedal travel will shift its threshold.

BTW, S3/R32/R - FNRG 57 mm : 2552 mm²

Don't get me wrong - shurely some other BBKs also have proper piston sizes,
but I bet many don't. Before buying a BBKs make sure it is a good match to your
existing system (master cylinder and rear calipers).

iirc you will need a 3mm spacer to clear the caliper on each side.

Here's a couple from mine, I use an 8mm spacer. Works really well and fills the arches too, also 8mm is the point at where H&R hubcentric system comes in so matches way better with the hub and eliminates any movement.

Title: Re: Porsche caliper's upgrade on Edition 30

Hey Rich.

986 Calipers, Porsche OEM Textar pads (squeak like a bitch), 312mm drilled Brembo disks, HEL lines and H&R 8mm spacers.

For road use it's awesome but I've gota sort that squeak out. I have some anti-rattle shims but not fitted them yet. If that doesn't work then new pads are a must before I go completely mental  :signLOL:

Thanks Andy!  :happy2: They look awesome. Are your calipers and Boxster one's identical?

will defo be upgrading brakes soon...fund permitting! :)

No worries, they are indeed Boxster calipers using the correct part numbers as per DaveB's thread on the NQSBBK.

Just don't use Textar pads unless you want the entire county to know you're driving your car!

I still can't decide between some OEM road pads or aftermarket Fast Road pads such as Ferodo DS-2500.

Does anyone have the part number for the anti rattle shims at all?

Also if you were to uprate the disk at the same time to something drilled or grooved what are the best options?

Cheers

^^^^ I believe these are the shims your after...

I am getting new OEM discs (maybe just remove and paint the unswept area) but lots of peeps get the J Hooks from DaveB or grooved or drilled discs.  :happy2:

I'm going to fit Brembo HP Sport pads all round on mine. PSI tuning have them. I have no idea what they'll be like, I'm just gonna go for it! Probably with OEM discs too.

@MC71
Thanks a lot mate that's brilliant!
I have just bought a second hand NQSBBK so I am 50/50 wether to buy new disks and pads or run used pads and disks that have still got loads of life left.

^^^^ Its not a necessary by any means but when my NQS BBK goes on in the next month or so it will be with new pads and new discs, ETTO. Suppose.

I'm sure there is some mention of new pads/discs along with a BBK in DaveB's thread on the NQSBBK.  :happy2:

Well if the shims don't have the desired effect then I'll go for new pads, not sure what kind but the non-squeaky type would be top of my list..........any suggestions would be greatly received.

Andy.
