Title: Number plate led lighting
Post by: Neil R on January 10, 2013, 10:27:38 am
Can anyone tell me how I go about fitting led number plate lights to my ed30? Is it just a case of fitting bulbs or do I need some sort of kit?

You just need canbus LED's so you don't get a 'bulb out' warning on the display.

Mine arrived from www.hids-direct.co.uk this morning. I don't think Halfords do them.

Unlikely they'll actually have tried on an Audi of year 'MYxx' as I've found with most LED light sellers, to be fair Neil. The lights will almost definitely fit and almost definitely work, but you'll get a canbus error without any doubt. I'm going to meetup with my mate (adamsin on here) who owns my old flame of a MK5 GTI which I fitted these very Xtec bulbs too, in fact, to try them in the Audi once and for all.

I've been through more sets of LED plate bulbs for the Audi than have been manufactured, it feels like.
Basically the 2009+ Audi canbuses (particularly the A3) is fussy as f**k. It even spits a dash error for OEM Audi A5 LED bulb units (£25 a pop), WITH a VCDS setting enabled to allow OEM LED bulb units.

Bullshizer, eh?  :sad1:

+1 Got a set of these in the post this morning as one of my old ebay specials was doing morse code as i drove along giving me a bulb out on the dash  :fighting:

Once removed i could see that they had been running hot and scorched on the circuit board on both bulbs

These are brighter than my previous ones which were only 3smd and not 9smd but not stupidly bright like some that i've seen driving around lighting up the floor  :signLOL:

So far so good  :happy2: fingers crossed they last a decent amount of time

Dave

Just to confirm Justin (after my little story book further up) having tried these by swapping them out of my previous MK5 GTI which I still have access to, these work, but produce a DIS error as expected. They look great but you'd need to disable the cold plate lamp diagnosis with VCDS to avoid the error. You of course then get no DIS error if one of them blows either, but it's an average workaround.
