Title: Project Milltek Sport Golf GTI Mk6
Post by: SteveP on January 14, 2013, 04:04:07 pm
Time to share the new work project I have been working on for the last few weeks.

Our new 2013 Time Attack Car: -

(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fkk207%2FStevep_010%2FTimeAttackFinal6A_zps480e226a.jpg&hash=8358cea53b2cb4966571004c79783bae1e347929)

It's going to be a full on race car with a wide arch kit, widened track and a target dry weight of 1000kg's, power to be high 400's  :driver:

A time lapse camera is running on the build so lots of info to come, currently being stripped and caged

Brake and clutch, you re-use the OEM drive by wire pedal  :happy2:

We will find out on the weight in the next 10 days once the final body parts arrive (or I drive the 980 miles to Poland to collect them)

As i see in the picture you have opted for the TT mk2 front hub and lower control arms, so app. 22 mm wider track each side?
The rear are they the Scirocco rear alloy hubs? How much wider track will that give you Steve?

Very, very nice, Steve!  :notworthy:
In your images and in VW Poland images I noticed some alignment issues with the new bonnet, fenders and hood (ok for racing but not ok for street). Are the elements all aligned on your Golf (my guess is that they are only in a temporary position)? Is the alignment a real issue or am I just imagining things?

No details being release on the software or engine specs at this stage.

Finishing touches starting to go today, like the trim, seals, door handles, wing mirrors, all the wiring and quick release steering wheel to name of few of todays achievements  :happy2:

Is the vehicle solely for track/off road use or does it have vehicle approval for road use?? Completely random I know, but something I really find interesting!  :p

It is a time attack car, wait until you see some of the others. There is a S1 Exige that entered last year and did well. This year they have gone bonkers with a 600BHP engine and a full aero package tested in a wind tunnel. It has a rear spoiler coming out of the front.  :chicken: Looks ridiculous but when the rule book doesn't exist, to stand a chance of competing you have to go bonkers.  :happy2:  :driver:

Fair point.

Steve, how come there is no front splitter or rear diffusers on, or is that still in the pipe line?  I remember reading about Bo Nielsons VXR which i gather was pretty average when he first entered, but once he started fiddling around with the aero and splitters/diffussers he started outpacing everyone.

Of course, just due to the weather we have been able to get as much track time as we would have liked to shake down the car. I have collected the car tonight and will be bringing it back to Milltek HQ tomorrow morning ready for the livery to be applied and final fit of few finishing touches  :happy2:

Also a massive thanks to Vagbremtechnic (aka DaveB) for sourcing and hand delivering some of the finest brakes I have ever seen  :notworthy: :notworthy:

Just spoke to Steve...

A frustrating day but very much underlined by some quietly confident sense that its a very promising car which if things continue will be the one to watch.

Brakes performed as advertised some tweaking required to get 100% out of them but thats as expected with the setup the cars running. Steve might put some pics up but remember its early in the season and sometimes there's little point educating others as to what you're running.

I bet you guys were gutted about the car losing drive.  Was this in the free practice or during the timed sessions?

Am i right in saying this year slicks are allowed?

Bit of a slide  :driver:

It snapped a drive shaft going out to the qualifying session, we got it swapped in time for the final but it had some other damage that prevented it from setting a good time.

We are off to Zandvoort in 10 days so the car is currently being sorted at KPM and will be ready for it's next adventure  :driver: :driver:

Is driveshaft failure a known issue in the Mk5/6 race cars or was it just a one off?  Any uprated alternatives or is it a case of buy loads of stock ones and replace them as required?

Cadwell is renowned to be harsh on transmissions due to frequently skipping around and getting air time with all the mad elavation changes

The driveshafts do fail (see APR's FB page) so we will be carrying spares. In our case it was the outer CV it killed but this was one of the few old parts on the car.

And I am sure the oil pump is meant to stay inside the engine not end up 150 foot away from the car after being ejected through the sump

Very, very, very nice Steve!  :notworthy:

245/40/18 Dunlop DG03Z Direzza (Dry)

Some questions about the tires: what compound are you using? Do you have different compounds for different weather? If yes, could you please tell me what compound you use at what weather (if it's not a secret, of course)?
I am asking because I also have 03G on my car...

Cheers for posting a spec up Steve.  Ive been looking forward to this for ages.  :drinking:

The car has gone through some major changes in the past 6-8 weeks due to a massive failure of the original Stage 3+ motor.

Ouch , that stage 3+ motor from the temptress just seems to be the Mk5 equivalent of my vRS engine, ie always going wrong  :fighting:  What engine code was the Stage 3+ motor? Was it CDLA or BWA/AXX.  Do we know the route cause, or was it a case of who cares, throw it away, start again with a different tuner/engine.

So the spec as it stands today: -

Shell / Interior

4-Point Airjack System

Suspension & Brakes

VAG OEM Alloy hubs and wishbones (From TTRS on the front and Scirocco R on the Rear)

Engine / Transmission

AET Hybrid Turbo
Drexler Front Diff

Interested in the specs above.

Looking good now though

I assume the TT-RS wishbones are the same as the TT arms with lower camber adjustment we have been using on this forum for a couple of years?
Sorry to hear about the engine SpeveP, a lot of work has gone into it  :sad1:
I do like the fact that you use the Michelin Pilot Super Sport for wet weather which back up the impression i have of these tyres, they keep impressing me.
What tuning parts has gone into the new engine or is the internal stock for now?  :happy2:

Also Steve, are you in a position to tell about the scirocco rear hubs: besides they are of alloy, are the increasing the track width, and if so by how much?  :drinking:
Title: Re: Project Milltek Sport Golf GTI Mk6

  • I presume the 4 point jack system is exactly as it sounds and is to jack the car off the deck?  Is there a premium on fast pit stop times in Time Attack to warrant the extra weight of this?
  • TTRS lower control arms?  Does that mean these wil fit on the std spec Mk5 GTI as well?  If so, what benefits to they bring over say Audi TT wishbones, or do they only fit due to the extra track you guys run.
  • Drexler LSD?  Is that a plate of ATB LSD  not heard of these before, presumably this is orientated to track use and not road
  • AET Hybrid?  HOw does this rate/differ to say a LO4xx or compare power wise to the GTx28?)

The airjack system is for a number of reasons, it's gives us the opportunity to complete a pit stop during a TA session if required and is just bloody helpful when working on the car in the pit garage too.

We are using TTRS hubs and arms for the extra track and weigh saving, I believe these are the same as all TT Quattro arms.

The Drexler diff is a low maintenance plate diff so can be run for a full season with being rebuilt

I don't have anything to compare the AET to the Loba at this stage so won't comment on that. All I know is the car running a mild 1.15bar boost at Hockenheim was able to set lap times than just 0.6 seconds slower than a fully stripped and race prepped Golf R running 500+bhp that was driven by a pro German Touring car driver who's won the event for the last 3 years (but we where faster than the two APR cars  :signLOL:)

Stock internals for now on the CDLA lump, we aren't pushing for big power at present  :happy2:

This is a 2 year + project so have plently of time to develop the car.

Excellent Steve, that you are doing so well against the opposition  :happy2:
No doubt that the team is benefitting from your time on this forum and in time you will prevail  :congrats:
I follow you on the benefits of running a stock engine and then gradually upping the power when needed. No doubt i will follow this car closely and see if there's something i can use for my own car in the process  :drinking:
The info on the rear hubs would be much appreciated as i'm considering this for my own car as well

Keep up the great work  :notworthy:
