Title: Advice Please. Age old tapping....whats the best way forward?
Post by: jamesmcd on January 16, 2013, 05:55:19 am
Hello Folks,

My car sounds horrible when ticking over. Spoke with my local garage who informed me that all MK5 sounds like this, and scrolling through the forum confirms that

The thing sounds like a tractor on my drive and its really bugging me, but appears to quiet down when at speed. I have read on here to get the cam follower changed, which i plan on doing. But i have been informed that simple changing the Oil filter, giving the car an oil change and getting the tappings reset is the best way forward (initially atleast). Has this worked for anyone else?

I ask this question not really knowing what a Cam follower is , so if that is related to reseting the tappings, please excuse my ignorance.

Hi James  :happy2:

Welcome to the forum mate. Yeah the Tfsi engine is a rattler. Mine is noisy even though my cam follower has been changed by the dealer.
It's mainly when the engine is cold though.

How many miles has your car done? Is it serviced properly by VW or a VW Specialist?

I think the follower needs changing on the 4th year service, but I could be wrong.

Like I say though, they do sound a bit like diesels.

I've got to admit the TFSI engine does 'rattle' a bit because of the high-pressure direct injection, however it sounds nowhere as loud as the likes of a PD diesel engine. My 2008 is only marginally louder than a normal 2 litre petrol engine (astra vxr etc).

P.S. your engine will sound more rattly if you are missing the engine cover, or requiring an oil change/ oil topup / worn fuel pump cam follower  :happy2:
