Can we keep it to residential lines fellas.... Internal networks of University's IS just willy waving
Its not about mines faster than yours or anything like that ....more to see the varying speeds we all seem to be getting in different areas of the country, someone living in the middle of nowhere running on 50 year old twisted copper wire wont get the same speed as a university student living in the middle of London.

....It's not getting onto the forum which is ever slow - It's then SOMETIMES loading threads or navigating anywhere on the site. It's doubtless down to this site's server problems/limitations.

It's rubbish where I am. Sometimes the download speed is less than 1 Mbp/s. Ping and upload are always around the same figure but download varies quite a bit. I'm in the process of switching from Talk Talk to BT so hope BT is better (my neighbours have better results on the speedtest and they are with BT). I can't watch any video online without it constantly buffering and it's doing my nut in. I used to be with Pipex and never had any trouble before they merged with Talk Talk.
I also get rubbish mobile phone signal. The joys of living out in the sticks a bit :fighting:
Edit: Just looked through this thread again and it appears I have the slowest connection :angry015:
-

....I used to be with Pipex before Talk Talk too. In fact "pipex" is still part of my email address. But I get a faster connection now than when it was Pipex. :happy2:

Interesting that your speed test result shows your ISP as Talk Talk but mine says Tiscali. I still have a Pipex e-mail address too but don't use it as it's too long!

Remember freeserve .... showing my age now...
-
Haha we were with AOL when first starting off and then went to Freeserve. they were awesome at the time.
-
Anyone used to use compuserve? That's really old school free serve was the newer cooler service at th time haha. Didn't yahoo buy free serve?
-
I think we had compuserve Internet in 1994! 56k was a bitch! Then we had broadband fitted by NTL in 1998 which was 512k. By today's standard it's dog slow but it was amazing at the time. I guess it's all relative though, file sizes were a lot smaller then.
-
^^^
Yes generally you are correct but it would still take 30-60 mins to dl a song. MP3's have always been around the same size.
-
Remember going into Dixons and seeing piles CD's of AOL and Freeserve
-
My home broadband is shocking as seen below

Tethering through my mobile phone is superb however and upload is usually much better than this around the 8-10mb speed
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fe58%2Fwinrya%2F2013-01-19194209_zps19e1b44a.jpg&hash=46916479a580f625cba54e1682c873e2e575ec63)

Freeserve were taken over by wanadoo and then orange. We stuck with them the whole way through and only recently jumped ship. I remember compuserve. Didn't have internet accessthen so gave all my free cds to my mate.

Anyone used to use compuserve? That's really old school free serve was the newer cooler service at th time haha. Didn't yahoo buy free serve?
We had Compuserve with our 14.4kbps Apple Mac Performa, unreal how quickly it progressed from there. That really was painful. Uploading to Geocities took forever!
Also recall getting 512kbps from Telewest and thinking it was amazing - multiple Audiogalaxy downloads at the same time!!

I've noticed that TalkTalk seem to be performing the slowest compared with the others here - Is that due to a user's location or due to a TalkTalk package?
-
Worst thing is how slow we have been to catch up with the Asian countries on broadband, I remember when I was living in Singapore (2000 to 2002), in 2000 we had 8mb Broadband and in 2001 we had 16mb, think they have 200mb now

I was with Talk Talk for years. At first they were great, comparible speed to everyone else but cheaper than most...
Over the years they have increased the prices but fell behind in the speed department. We even started to get dropout and slow speeds more regulary over the last few years.
Got so sick I eventually changed to BT last year. Comparable price wise and our speed doubled and is soo much stronger :happy2:

That's my main reason for switching from Talk Talk to BT. I can't play videos or stream music without it constantly buffering. Both neighbours are with BT and have faster speeds then me so I thought I'd give them a try.
Part of my reason for slow speeds is living in a semi-rural area. I'm about 1.5-2 miles from the exchange too.

That's 3 times faster than mine . Just done another speed test and it came out as 1.04 Mbp/s :sad1:

....I don't have any music of video buffering probs but having faster performance is always a good thing.
Did you have to dump your TalkTalk email address when you switched to BT?
And did it cost you anything to end your TalkTalk contract?
-
Cost us nothing Robin, end of contract. I never used the Talk Talk email address they gave me..
-
Mine is 55 meg download and 11-12 meg upload. Not bad considering that before I upgraded it was 1.1 meg max download and kept throwing me off the net every 15 mins or so. :fighting:

I'm not switched yet, it's not happening until Feb 13th because I've also cancelled my Sky to move to BT You View and had to give 31 days notice for that so decided to have everything switching on the same day.
It's not cost me anything with Talk Talk because I wasn't in a contract as I've been with them for so long (think I started a new contract when I moved house in 2007 but it was only a 12 month contract IIRC). I also don't have a Talk Talk e-mail address, only Pipex from before the Talk Talk takeover. I assume that will stop working on Feb 13th.

Question for the people with BT Infinity: are you all using it with the HomeHub? Do you have to use it with the HomeHub?
Reason for asking is I have several Airport Express base stations around my house and it doesn't appear to be compatible with them...
-
At the moment;
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fdaz.co%2Fmedia%2Fh8%2Folih%2Fb30d42123237b33e70e27140ab26b36e.jpg&hash=0f2014b0eaaa6f07a9b4b156e47387c769d32f50)
And then from the 8th im going BT Infinity, which apparently will be 70 download and 20 upload :happy2:

I believe you can use any router that will accept an ethernet feed.

Merci beaucoup Hedge - got an AirPort Extreme somewhere. Will have to dig it out.
-
There was an advisory about it needing to be QoS enabled for BT Vision if you have that.
-
I do not, but thank you :happy2:
-
What is interesting though is they have now started doing routers with built in VDSL modems so you can ditch the white Huawei box. :happy2:

Awesome Rich - thank you.
Do you have to put any settings into it or does it auto-detect everything?

Pretty rubbish these days :sad1: Thought mine was bad at 12 DOWN / 0.75 UP - can't wait for fibre, any coming near you soon?

The new place won't have fibre yet it seems (although AKS Alex has it up the road so may investigate!)
Time to ask for MAC and see what BT has to offer!

Virgin Media has upgraded my connection speed from 10mb to a maximum of 30mb. Just done quick test using Speedtest.net and i like what i see.

Not bad for a home ISP on the edge of the countryside

here's mine :

i pay for 80/20, i get a good deal, and i'm more than happy with the quality of the connection, even though it rarely gets much higher than the above.
Its stable, never drops out, and provides a better connection for say COD Modern Warfare 2 when compared to my friend on the same housing estate, he's running Virgin Media 100mb - i'm always the host - the numbers aren't everything !

So I've gone from this:
(https://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.speedtest.net%2Fresult%2F2446214930.png&hash=3690d5d35ddad12fe7a71606b8a540d503f0c587) (http://www.speedtest.net)
To this:

The original one was on a good day too. Some days I'd struggle to get 1 Mb/s. I've been with BT now for 36 hours and it's already loads quicker. They say it can take up to 10 days to stabilise.
It's not super quick in the grand scheme of things and nowhere near some of the speeds some of you get, but believe me to get 5 Mb/s is a victory for me and quite good for where I live!
