Title: Build date?
Post by: Tortaruga on January 18, 2013, 11:40:37 pm
Is there any way to establish the build date of one's car?

Thanks

.
Theoretically yes. But it could be tedious. I would start off my asking VW UK and supplying your chassis number - The build week ought to be traceable.

I know from being told at the time that Volkswagen started building my Mk5 GTI on July 11th 2005 in Wolfsburg and that it was completed ready to ship by the end of that week. I also know that it was an 06 spec.

I think you can work it out from the VIN.
There are a few vin decoders on line.

^^^ The VIN gives the model year, but not the build date. I think it may be necesary to contact VW UK as you suggest Robin.

Hmmm

Got this from an Eos forum of all places:

'If you look inside the drivers door frame there should be 2 stickers, There shouldbe a silver one with info such as tire info. There should also be a black sticker. The top date (month and year) is the approximate date.'

....I'll check mine next time I get her out of her batcave (not until all the snow and ice have gone).

It does feel nice knowing exactly which date my GTI was born - It's her birthday!  :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :pomppomp: :star:

You should be able to work the build date from the VIN number?
I work in a car factory, and all the VIN numbers are consecutive. the first few numbers a different but thats down to actual model derivatives. takes roughly 16hrs from start of process to being driven out of the factory

Remove your ashtray and look at the date stamp , it will generally be 2 months before your build date . The Vin will give the build date too but haven't got access to my "Bible" to tell you how to work it out for a VW

One option I most definitely didn't want.

Try either passenger or drivers side air vent for the stamp then . Mine hasn't got an ashtray either !  :innocent:

Its what we used to do in the old days !

....As long as you didn't end up with seven because you couldn't put the car back together again after looking for the build date.
