Thinking of going on an interior-wrapping mission in my Jetta (sorry not a GTI people) over these cold months after reading many threads on here but the selection available is vast....was thinking I'd go for 3m vinyl as I've heard good things but there's many different types and they all seem quite similar.
Has anyone used the Scotchprint or Di-noc types or could recommend the best type?
Any help would be appreciated! :scared:

.
I'm not 100% sure but I think mine is the Di-noc vinyl. Whichever it is, it's slightly textured and also imitates the imperfect linear finish of real carbonfibre.

Oh, and A Warm Welcome to the forum! :drinking:
-
Thank you for the warm welcome! Will have to get some pics up of my car soon in the new members thread, currently its running on Jom coilovers (just wanted a cheap fix till I can save for an air ride fix), I've fitted an alpine DVD and a few other bits...
As for your wrapping you've done a really nice job, it makes me a proud dub-owner to see how a bit of ingenuity can make your car personal! I'm sure with a bit of tom-foolery I can get some lovely results too...just didn't want to waste my money on a inferior product that just wasted my time! :happy2:
-
Are you referring to C/F effect vinyl or vinyl in general?
If C/F I'd go for 3M DI NOC CA-1170 for the Gloss Black effect. Not a bad representation of C/F IMO. I have wrapped a few bits with it, fairly hard to work with around small areas though but great on large areas.
Got a few different types from these peeps when wrapping bits...

Looks amazing on the back of your Recaro's Robin. :happy2:

....I didn't wrap my Recaro's myself :ashamed: - I know my limitations.

How's it lasted Robin? Has it got knocked and scratched at all? They made a cracking job of that wrapping. :happy2:

....Having teenage girl passengers in the back (now in their early 20's!) has meant the inevitable marks but nothing too serious. Otherwise the vinyl has lifted slightly in very small areas around the slot. Everywhere else it's still as perfect as the first day. All my exterior carbon is the real thing.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'm going with C/F I think I was hoping to do some smaller bits mainly (well for starters till the confidence and craziness grows) but will try the Di-Noc and see how I get on... What can go wrong!

....If you search online you'll probably find some helpful vids on techniques.

Ah I might just make use of my own hair drier...Erm, did I say that?! Well anyway that's a good call, thanks, I often forget the word famous tube of knowledge

Anyone used the 4D Version yet? looks like it has a nice gloss finish like the Focus ST used to have around the stereo:

A gloss finish carbon vinyl will probably look even closer to the real stuff as most of the carbon used on road cars (not supercars or race cars) has a gloss finish.
Personally, subject to what you wrap, I prefer the 'matt' finish carbon vinyl, especially in the cabin. I look forward to seeing some 4D gloss though.

Well ive ordered some of the 4D stuff, as the black section around my DSG stick has a few scratches, and you can only buy it as the wholes section including shifter
and it costs over £150 :surprised:
so im just gonna wrap it in this 4D stuff and see what it looks like, ill post a pic when done.

It does indeed look amazing in the pics but is there actually any such thing as a 4d effect or is this just a cunning sales ploy?! The only '4d' I've ever heard of was a film or suchlike in London where the fourth dimension was smell... It's worth a look tho :happy2:

....Scratch-N-Sniff carbon vinyl, anyone?
Yeah, 4D must be a marketing aid - Quite clever really.

Think they should call is 4G not 4D....as in 4th Generation...thats all it is...the newest type...looking forward to seeing waht it looks like, if it looks half decent might wrap the main part of the centre console
