Have played it once so far, while reading and posting on this forum.

The Chill genre is actually quite a tricky one to get right in an hour mix. It mustn't be so chilled that it doesn't hold the listener's interest at all. Chill should relax you but not bore you. I was beginning to get bored after about the third or fourth track but Thomas Datt (I think) and then Groove Armada with Will Young came to the rescue and made me stop writing and listen. Of course it's always going to come down to personal preferences and individual tastes in music.

It was good to hear some tracks with vocals as a relief from lots of instrumental tracks.

A criticism I have of most sets on the hyperinterwebbynet is that most don't publish a track list (you did so) and don't give a start of song time (you didn't do so either). I realise that with a long crossover you just have to give a rough guide but it helps a listener because not everyone will already know the track and it can then be ID'd and also it allows the listener to go back to one of the tracks he/she really enjoys and wants to repeat.

For example, I love that track which I think is by Sasha, or is it the track by Slam? or is it the track by Chicane? It then allows me to go off and check out their other music if I know who they are. Some "00:??:??" alongside the track names, please.

I enjoyed how the mix built gradually into what I call laid back (chilled?) dance music - Will Young has that very gay disco sound but good gay discos always play ace tracks!

Overall, I enjoyed it and some tracks I loved but not all. It flowed well.

Those are my honest first impressions and I'll definitely be playing it again. My days of drinking JD with smoking a few joints are over but I have doubtless consumed so much that I still have a residue!

Thanks for sharing  :drinking:

Hi Robin,

thanks for taking the time to provide in depth feedback. Sometimes friends will say the mixes were good but you always wonder if they just dont want to hurt your feelings, but more often than not you dont get any feedback. I must admit that it was very tricky because as you say I felt i had to raise the tempo, but raise it by how much, after all it was not meant to have block rocking beats  I see what you mean re the track times i can go back and listen to it and amend the tracklist to show the times, as you say it helps listeners to identify a certain track easily.

I hope you do listen again as it may grow on you further. One problem was whether to mix it in key or just let the tracks get quicker. If I did it again some of the tracks may be in a different order, but it was meant to be spontaneous. I can send some more mixes out in the post to you as mentioned but will try to burn a variety for you  :drinking:

I'm always happy to give in depth feedback. On SoundCloud some folks just say "dope" or write a one word comment - Whereas it's good that they bothered at all, sometimes a few more words can be helpful even if you don't agree with them!

On the other hand, many folks aren't very good at expressing themselves. I hate people getting intellectual about music though - Afterall, it's fundamentally emotional and nothing else. It should either move your soul or your feet, or even both at once.

Spontaneous is always good I think.....................

....Most definitely will listen again more than once! I really enjoy a 1hr set.

One of my current favourites is this one by a Russian chick, Yuliya, who mixes under the name of SpringLady...........................

I'm a sucker for a rich sound production - Probably because my living room also doubles as a home recording studio with a small mixing desk and various reference monitors and I sit in the sweet spot while oozing verbal diarrhea on car forums.

I have played and listened to the whole set again....

It has really grown on me

I've picked up on how the percussion sound travels through the whole set - The 'wood block' and tap-tap sounds are what are carrying it.

That Groove Armada / Will Young track got me dancing in my chair! In a way it introduces the climax to the whole set until it starts to chill its beats back down again. But I love the bass in Chicane and also Sasha's dreamy voice.

The whole set is subtle - I like it - I like it a lot  :happy2:

The first track by Beanfield reminds me a bit of Zero7 - I assume you have heard of them?

Cheers Robin  :happy2:, after your initial review it got me thinking if I did it again would I change the order, maybe the Guy J track first and go from there but live dj'ing should of course be spontaneous. I dj'ed in a couple of bars about 6 years ago and pretty much pre planned my set as I did not have the confidence to deviate.

Yeah heard of Zero 7 - have a couple of their tracks somewhere I think. Re Sasha, I am not convinced the first track featuring Sasha is THE Sasha who I used as penultimate track; I will have to check the credits. Either way, it was a very nice track and it was that name that drew me to listen to it in the first place.

Already planning next months installment - Electronica!

Post by: berg on March 03, 2013, 12:11:51 pm
Hi guys, bit of an experimental, leftfield mix this month (well last month, this month's Indie Dance/Nu Disco mix to come!) with some tracks that cant be easily pidgeon holed but are still very definately electronic. I mixed this on my pioneer cdj's but was not happy with the result so have re-edited on my computer to make it tighter. if you like EDM this still wont be to everyones tastes but if you like underground dance music give it a whirl.

yeah it is fairly minimal and i can see why you would say monotonous, but for some some reason i dont mind it even though most of the music i play has melody and that admittedly has none

I just sent you a PM.... BEFORE reading your post above. And guess what words I used: "Uplifting" and that I didn't know any of the tracks, therefore "not mainstream".

So, you achieved what you set out to do. I'm playing it now as I type. It's a nice balance of being dancy background but still holding my musical attention.

EDIT: I found it..... "Amin Edge - Yeah"

thanks robin, i am happiest with this mix the most out of the three. it definately got me thinking i should play more of this genre because as i said a lot of these mixes are experimental for me as traditionally i play trance, progressive house with a sprinkling of breaks/techno. but i was pleasantly surprised by the quality of these tracks as very funky without being too, well for want of a better word, girly  :jumpmove:

yeah hard not to dig that track, i will try and post up the times of the next track coming in over the weekend. when i mix the sets live on the cdj's it is just one continuous mix whereas if mixed on the computer it splits the tracks for me but i only use the computer to re-edit a live mix off the cdj's as it is a bit soulless and i like like manually beat matching the tracks a la old technics 1210's style  :jumping:

Right, I did a Deep House mix for April but for some reason it is saying it is copyrighted and wont let me upload the link from my mediafire site?

In the meantime here is a live mix I did on the fly at a BBQ 2 weeks ag0 - fairly energetic, festival style with a mixture of trance, tech and progressive house. Track listing to follow, enjoy

PS Hope to do my May mix this weekend which will be an energetic breakbeat mix!

Have had this on in the background this evening while we had some peeps round and eveyone (well, nearly) loved it, especially my 22 year old daughter who now wants this for her wedding disco music!  This will definitely be going in the car, that's for sure.

Some great classic tunes in there too, love the remixed Killers song and the Mansun Remix has improved an already good song IMO. I'm a big Robert Miles fan and Children (in its original, plain radio edit form) is an all time great for me but I do like the mix of it you've added on here.

The only song that didn't do it for me was the Infected Mushrooms one, probably just me (I'm blaming my age)!

Keep it up, as my daughter said "its sick" (I think that's a good thing).

Cheers, thanks for taking the time to provide the feedback too. Is good to know it can appeal to different ages. Is always tricky with remixes, I use that Tilt - Children remix as it is so short it really makes people want more of the original! The Mansun remix is a pretty solid update as is Rendevous.  :happy2:

Hi mate, depends on what style you like really. These are different every month and so some mixes wont appeal even if you did like the last couple. Some of these styles are not quite what I would play either eg chill, nu disco so is a challenge for me. This month... Electro House so will be Guetta, Tiesto et al

Anyhow, I hope you do like this breaks mix, I was fairly happy with it  :happy2:

Wasn't really a fan of the chill out mix but then i'm never very keen on chill out mixes and i wasn't keen on the Lana Del Ray track on the second mix. The rest of the second mix really started to pick up though and i did enjoy it. The third and fourth mix are excellent however and much more what i would listen to  :happy2:

After last months underground breaks exploration for June I have a more commercial, but fun, electro house mix. Am not a David Guetta fan but have to admit a lot of his productions are entertaining; the track used in this mix even features a cheeky sample from Alice Deejay (remember that?) enjoy, and feedback welcome  :happy2:

yeah it says "copyrighted" again

i wonder if it is because it is called "electro house" and as that is a sub-genre of electronic dance music it is actually copyrighted? i will change the name and try to re-upload. If that does not do it then i have no idea...

After last months underground breaks exploration for June I have a more commercial, but fun, electro house mix. Am not a David Guetta fan but have to admit a lot of his productions are entertaining; the track used in this mix even features a cheeky sample from Alice Deejay (remember that?) enjoy, and feedback welcome  :happy2:

http://www.mediafire.com/listen/i62zcl5hxj1577r/06_-_E_H.mp3

Sultan & Ned Shepard - Long Way From Home
Martin Solveig feat. Kyle - Hey Now (Laidback Luke Remix)
Fedde Le Grand - Rockin' n Rollin'
Hardwell feat. Amber Shepherd - Apollo (Lucky Date Remix)
Empire of the Sun - Alive (David Guetta Remix)
Benny Benassi & Pink is Punk feat. Bright Lights - Ghost (Dyro Remix)
Tiesto - Chasing Summers ( R3hab & Quint Remix)
Martin Solveig - The Night Out (Ryeland Remix)
David Guetta feat. Ne-Yo & Akon - Play Hard (Albert Neve Remix)
Ferry Corsten & Bassjackers - Collision
Chris Lake - Ohh Shhh (Club Mix)
Nicky Romero - Symphonica ( Cash Cash Remix)
Laidback Luke & Hardwell - Dynamo
Afrojack - Rock the House

4 downloads of the electro houise mix so far, comments? Personally, i only really like a couple of the tracks on this as Electro not my favourite, the Breaks mix is far better for my own personal tastes.

I'm loving this latest installment. Right up my street. Couple of tracks in there, Peace Division is classic and have always liked the Justin Martin track. Also have never heard that Candi Staton one but liking it alot.

I think all the next mixes need to be deep house  :signLOL:

Cheers Ian, does grow on you the latest one I found. Have saved some of the strongest genres till last so have trance, psy-trance, techno, tech house and progressive house to come which are all more the styles i would usually play so the mixes may be a tad longer because there are too many good tracks out there  :jumpmove:

Have just a 45 minute experimental mix for a spinning/indoor cycling session but it would need tinkering to edit into the bits where you have to emulate hill climb/warm down etc but can post up the mix as it is  :happy2:

cheers matto, i thought this one would be more up your street as know you like your underground and not commercial stuff.

some of these tracks definately work their way under your skin after a few listens as i found myself repeating some of the words from the tracks even though they are certainly not sing along tunes! tbh i nearly re-recorded it asnd moved the peace division track, not sure would have it as track 4 if did it again. they have always made some proper, dark twisted tracks. The Audiojack track after Yousef is interesting as its really just a beats track, very simple, yet very effective and I love the Florence and the Machine remix  :pomppomp:

the latest trance one will take longer to d/l as had to do it at bit rate of 128 i think because you cant upload a file more than 100 bytes and with this file being at 2hrs 15 min it was way too big

Absolutely loved the new trance mix, had it on in the car on my way back up north this morning and didn't get tired or bored with any of it which i can quite easily do with other mixes. Can't really pick any faults with the mix at all, the latest one is much more my sort of mix and tunes than the first couple you did. Your transitions are very smooth and almost faultless, your very good at bringing in each track at the right time.

DJ Eco - Borealis (Solis & Sean Truby Remix) Absolute quality tune, Solis and Sean Truby can't do much worng at the moment  :happy2:

Think this mix will be on at a few house parties i'm off to at the weekend, excellent work  :happy2:

cheers jamie, glad you diggin it  :jumpmove:

In terms of the mix i think there is just one where i dropped a couple of beats and had to get it back in time but it is not that easy to spot.

trance, progressive house, tech house with some breaks or techno are the main styles i play so doing this mix was far easier for me that tackling nu disco or electro house. Next year i will stcik to a mix series which is more consistent in style and wont be one genre but will be always on the same vibe.

Went to creamfields on sat saw hernan cattaneo, sasha, oakenfold and eric prydz and bits and pieces of other people. oakey did not play a single one of these tunes but he did play another, presumably newer, remix of bullet in the gun. couple of my mates drove and met me there and they had this mix on in the car which they said got them in the festival mood  :happy2:

Hi guys, here is the Progressive House set. This sub genre of house has changed quite a lot over the last 10 years and become more commercial with some producers jumping ship to the tech house/techno scene. However, producers like Eric Prydz still ensure their are some corkers  :happy2: enjoy, and feedback very welcome  :drinking: (PS R.E.M fans may not like the losing my religion sample!)

Post by: berg on January 07, 2014, 06:55:11 pm
Well after being ill for over 3 weeks, finally got the final mix of the series done nearly a year after the Chill Out mix! So to finish off we have a power house of a psy trance set starting off at a healthy 137 bpm and containing a few samples a few a lot better known than others

I hope a few members have enjoyed these mixes - Hedge, Red Robin, Matto, MC71 and Jamie - honourable mention to you all and thanks for any feedback.

I wont be posting a monthly mix series on the forum this year but i will still be doing a lot of mixes for friends and maybe FB link etc which will all be my style this year ie wont be experimenting with so many genres and wont be a prisoner to a single sub genre in each mix.

So if anyone wants to be added to the mailing list eg Hedge please PM me your e mail address.

That's all folks  :drinking:
