Hey peeps
I am going to spray the original VW front emblem. I have separated it from the VW chrome and the other plastic part. I have some 3M to key it, my question is am in right in thinking I also key the black plastic in which the VW chrome part of the badge clips into (well key the inside of the VW as its going to be painted red and the chrome VW black)
Thank you!!

Keying in will help the paint stick better, advisable for the chrome as its not the best for painting. the black bit i would just key softly, done make go crazy, just enough to rough up the surface a little and loose its shiny surface.

Thanks for the prompt response mate. I thought that would probably be the case just wanted to check

Sand it all and in between each coat of paint as well. :happy2:
Get some very fine wet/dry sand paper and all will be good. To be safe and to help with the depth of finish of the paint, 3 coats of plastic primer, then 3 coats of the colour and at least 2 coats of lacquer. In this weather it will take ages to dry and may take in some moisture.
One of the ones I did for mine...

Cheers Martin. I have a Chinese Rep. Looks ok but the original will look much better. So Plastic primer x1 then more wet and dry over the primer then repeat twice with final coat of primer?

I did my front and rear badges the other day and dried them in the airing cupboard:

I use red plastikote on the rear VW part. NO key needed just make sure it clwean and dry
and paint in a warm area. You can get black vw badges to replace the chrome part from HK for less than a tenner Mine is still as new after 3 years Good fit with all clips in the right place
