Im looking to sell my mk2 cupra (was 340hp stage 2 now back to standard) and looking to buy a mk5 golf gti. What are things to look out for etc. And are the build quality that much better in a golf? Cheers :happy2:

If you want similar power then as you probably know it's the K04 Ed.30 you will be after. I doubt there will be much difference in build quality, perhaps a slight adv. to the Golf... the centre console is a nicer area in the Golf if I remember the Seat. Other than being a strange move... I'm sure you'll have all the same experiences with teh Golf as the Leon... same engine, brakes, exhast etc. I'm sure I will be corrected....

My bro-in-law has a Cupra R & my wife has an Altea - the SEAT's definitely lack in the cabin compared to the VW.
Retrfitting a glovebox light was a mod in the Altea
You'll miss the bigger brakes coming from a Cupra. Hardware wise, it's pretty much the same.
One thing you want to look out for in older GTI's is wing rust - look for bubbling in the dead centre of the lip of the front wings. This is my second mk5 to get a warranty repair over this.
-
ok cheers guys! the seat is very plasticy inside so a bit more leather etc would be nice!
-
its only the ed 30 that has the same spec as the cupra tho if im right?
-
Same cam follower issue no doubt.
-
yea i think they do. any other opinions on the change??
-
sorry for all the questions! are the ed30s worth it over a std gti?

sorry for all the questions! are the ed30s worth it over a std gti?
I would say so as I recently made exactly that decision, if you intend on doing performance mods especially.
Ed30 and GTI have the same 312mm/286mm brake setup which is smaller than the Cupra fronts.
-
oh only s3 and cupra with big brakes then?
-
any interior difs in gti/ed30?
-
The R32 has pretty much the same 345mm fronts, and 310mm vented rears - the Cupra is 286mm solid rears?
Ed30 has red stitching on interior trim, half leathers, tinted rear lights etc - been covered a million times if you have a search. Like many VAG cars it usually depends what options were ticked from new.
-
Can I ask why you feel the need to change mate???
-
I have done this change! Didnt quite like the Leon that much and I wanted DSG. Sure Leon has more power (well mostly noticeable when speeds are illegal), but I love the Golf a lot more for its interior, looks etc and even handling.
-
ah good to see someones changed! just fancy something a bit better build but wanted to make sure it was worth the change!
-
i dont want dsg and its a tough choice on colour.

I've been from a high spec MTV gt tdi with leather to an a3 sline and on to the cupra, the seats are more comfortable in the cupra, the plastics are worse in terms of touchy feel but there is less rattles in the cupra - none compared to what I had in the golf. The golf had more warranty work too. I could understand going to a mk6 gti but would consider the cupra to a mk5 gti a bit of a backward step - not that it's a bad car.
-
thats a spanner in the works! mk6 deisel then maybe?
-
I'd suggest it depends on whether the plastic panels have been removed. My old GT TDI had rattles everywhere as I had almost every panel off at least once, and did my best to avoid it.
My friend had a 1.9 Match where the only mod was changing brand of diesel and it sounded solid inside in comparison.
Our Altea (a Leon Plus really) again has rattles as panels have been off.
It is a bit of a weird swap though, much of a muchness.

having owned a Leon and a couple of Golfs of a similar age, if it was costing me a considerable amount to change, I probably would walk away
-
nothing to change, no loss realy. wanted somtinhg a little classier more refined?
-
I have a bit opposite experiences with VW and Seat. I drove a nice black mk5 GTI DSG 3 years, bought it new and drove 55tkm. After that one year with Seat Ibiza Cupra and one year with Seat Leon Cupra. I went back to GTI mk5 after Leon. Basicly the Golf's never really had any problems, I had zero warranty work done to my first GTI. Both Ibiza and Leon had some problems fixed under warranty, camshaft end oil leak, aircon broke down and some other small things. My current Golf may need a new flywheel soon but not much else have surfaced even having been tuned further.
EDIT: one more thing, I got a good deal on the trade, thats why I did it. Probably wouldnt have changed otherwise.

so VW>SEAT def?
-
also i have my exhaust still for sale, can i post that on here?
-
For me it would be a no on the move, I'd rather keep what I had or move to a mk6 gti maybe the s3. You would also be better off looking at the Octavia vrs, same basic parts as the mk6 but a slightly better interior than the Leon.
-
maybe a fabia? not sure now! what about the exhaust? can i sell it here?
-
read the sale section! :stupid:
-
Yes you can advertise the exhaust on here, it's seat cupra net that doesn't have a parts section. You will find most people from scn come on here looking for bits and there is also some very good information on here.

cheers dude

I feel that I have to comment on this.......
Up until May last year I had a Passat CC, simply the best car I have ever had. Circumstances changed a little so swapped to a Leon FR 2.0t. I bought a low milage 08 plate car with full service history. I thought to myself that this car ticks all the boxes, fast, good looking, DSG with the paddles.......I was hooked!
It is fast, good brakes and it did/does look good but after 11000miles in 6 months it had to go and I swapped to 58 plate Golf GT Sport 140 tdi. And I couldn't be happier.
There are no major differences, just lots of subtle ones, in the Golf the build quality is simply BETTER!, when the heater is on (auto) you simply set it to the temp you want to be and thats what happens, in the Leon you "notice it", The Golf has clearer, thicker glass and when you put something in the glovebox or door pocket or centre console cubby hole it simply sits there, in the Leon, every corner, every time you brake, every time you accelerate, your keys, pens, CD case what shout "HI, I'm here".
On top of this, there was an annoying knock from what I suspect was one of the CV Joints that the dealer "could not find" and ultimately the fact that it was drinking a litre of oil per month was beginning to scare me and 27mpg was simply not practical for what I use a car for so I raced back into the bosom of VW.
I need to change the brakes to better ones, I need to fit a steering wheel with paddles and I would like to colour code the hideous black plastic rear bumper but I am so much happier in the Golf.
Just my 10 pence worth but there you have it.
Chin, Chin.
