I've always found the one the car came with does the job

Has VW even revised it?

Is the r8 cap a split design like the original?  I've seen many posts about missing oil cap tops, I've had this too... Not sure if it catches on the bonnet fire lining or its heat expanding it off... Hasn't happened since the summer come to think of it, but keep a spare in the glovebox just in case.

I believe you have to split the R8 cap and re-seat it at a slight angle in order for it to sit "flat" when screwed in to the mk5 engine. This is the reason why some people have found their expensive R8 caps missing the top section after a while!

Not sure of the latest revision for the OEM cap but i purchased a replacement cap from the dealers in Dec 2011 and the part number was 06C 103 485 P and the price was £5.36 exc VAT

hope this helps

Rich

Cheers for that explanation, didn't know that about the r8 cap ... Although my issue with a missing top section was on the standard one... They are cheap enough ... Wouldn't want that happening on a 25 quid r8 cap tho.

R8 or 911 caps fit and look a little nicer.

The problem with the oem cap outer part being pulled off is when the engine is under load on the OEM engine mounts there is so much movement in the engine, as if rocks back and forth the cap is pulled off by the engine cover.

**Edit**

R8 oil and Coolant caps Dom

You're not running a dbilas intake are you mike? Get it swapped over for that Revo one like Alex!

I'm not sure I want a bling one, would rather have just a new oem one or maybe one from the latest Golf R...? Anyone know latest part numbers?

Thanks for all the replies  :P

I wouldnt say the R8 was 'bling' looks OEM+ to me.  I doubt you'll need the PN if you ring VW and say 2010 Golf R oil cap?

My standard cap split in two meaning i needed to use pliers to twist it off as I couldn't get any purchase on it without the handle.

Both caps seem susceptible to a certain degree, cold conditions seize the cap in place so when you go to twist it you twist the top half off and not the rest of it!

Now got an R8 cap on, at least the cover over the handle should last longer.

The one from creationmotorsport on eBay comes pre adjusted for the GTI :happy2:
