So in the next few days I will be getting my first MK5 after upgrading from my MK4.. Now I have test drove 2, one black standard and one silver edition 30. I like both, they are the same price, same mileage, both 2008, noth full VWSH, both 2 owners... I wanted a black gti orignally but the opportunity to pick up an edition 30 for the same price seems like a no-brainer. I know it is my choice to what I prefer but just looking for advice from those who know about them and the differences between them. IMO the interior is much better in the ed30 but from the outside I like the look of the black, not to say the silver doesnt look good because it does!

Seems odd that they are the same price, however if it's a clean example, I'd go for the K04 without question, esp. if your going to map it. :happy2:
-
I may be biased here.....ED30.
But, what's the options like? Odd they are the same price.
For example...heated seats, highline clocks, multifunction wheel, what headunit, luxury packs, does one have better history, can't see Xenon's on either?
-
id have to say ed30. :happy2:
-
Xenons only on the ed30 and it has all the extras I need inc those mentioned above. Both have good fsh and cambelts done. Both hpi clear. They are not exactly the same price, the ed30 is only a few hundred more which is fine. The interior on the ed30 is in another league to that of the std mk5.
-
ED30 for sure!
-
Looking at the pics, I don't think the Ed30 has xenons.
Personally if you've got the cash go for the edition 30 :happy2:
-
Go for the Ed30 , upgrading to 18"s on the Black GTI will cost you more than the price difference between the two cars , plus you get a K04 turbo and much more scope for tuning included.
-
ED30 all the way. You may always regret it if you get the GTI.
Many on here have upgraded from a GTI to an ED30
I had a similar dilemma a few years ago and plummed for a leon TFSI instead of a Cupra. It was a mistake and 2 years later a got a Cupra.
-
As a MK5 GTI owner I would say ED 30 as well. Decent value now and much more headroom for modifying but still great standard no doubt.
Go for a decent spec motor where possible :happy2:.
Can you get one with a warranty? Bit more safety.
Black looks great but shows up more dirt!
There is a silver ED30 in this thread and it looks top notch with 19 inch Monzas (Not OEM): http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,45652.0.html
-
Def the Edition 30, for all the reasons already stated above!
Will probably be more desirable when you come to sell too!
-
Check the Ed30 isn't a cat D. If it's cheap it might have history...although maybe it's the GTI that's overpriced??
Can you tell us what the forecourt prices are?
-
For what i've spent in mine i should have just saved another 2k and bought an ed30. Ed30 all the way fella. I wouldnt be bothered if the gti had every optional extra and the ed30 had none. Everything can be retro fitted anyways
-
Got to wonder why they are the same price, when i was looking for mine the ED30 was always £1000 -£2000 more if well specd...so seems strange...
-
I agree, I'd love to know the prices and full spec.
The GTI has got to have a much better spec. or is overpriced. Is it the same garage, looks similar in the pics.
-
Gti std is 8995
Gti ed30 is 9500
69,000 miles
70,000 miles
Both 2008 and different garages. If vw offer 6k trade in for an ed30, even if the dealer gets it for 7k off the seller and put it up for 9500 that's a quick 2,500 minus any fees profit margin so a fair if not over priced car in my opinion.
-
Silver all day long!
-
Silver ED30 no question about it ( but I am biased reminds me of my old one :sad1: But someone else is enjoying it now :pomppomp: ) :happy2: ...... Looking at you're pictures the ED30 doesn't have Xenon headlights or the headlamp washers to go with them.

Nice to here that, cheers :happy2: :drinking:
-
ED30. Job done.
Next...........
:happy2:
-
are you sure the ed30 has xenons ?
although i have a black gti with a fair few retro fits the ed30 wins this hands down
£500 difference, great, as long as your not missing something on the ed30 that is making it such a close price
maybe add some more pics for us if you can

so no xenons
i guess it is a basic spec ed30 with the edition of bbs alloys
the advert says mfsw but it doesnt have one
noticed it doesnt have an arm rest, is all ed30s like that ?i like having the arm rest
i guess if you also had the link for the gti then it would be easier to compare then although most people will say the ed30
looks like a tidy enough car though
apart from that stereo lol
-
Appears a very basic car, only option i can see is what looks like rear parking sensors.

I posted the link not the OP, i'm assuming this is the one he is talking about.

Personally not fussed about added extras as long as the car has fsh, looks tidy outside and inside and drives good then I'm happy! The black gti doesn't have xenons either but I don't drive much at night so again not fussed! Going to get him soon, can't wait!
-
So did you go for the black one in the end?
I tried a black 5-dr Pirelli before my ED30 - loved the colour, just seemed too much work to keep clean!
Some very dark tints on the rear of that black gti - any other mods on it?

:congrats::congrats:
Good man. Enjoy driving the bloody thing. Xenons won't make up for a poor car, although if a good car has them then fair enough.
Who needs a reversing camera anyway, apart from corpulent oafs?

saying that i dug the car out for the wife on sat and parked it on the road after digging all the snow, 1 foot behind her was the snow piles from the diggers shoving it all onto the side, about 1 foot high.
what does the wife do when she gets in it, puts it into reverse and goes straight into the snow / ice pile :surprised:
AND THATS WITH A MK6 REVERSE CAMERA unbeleivable,,, all she had to do was dfrive straight off,,,, thankfully no damage,,, might have been a different story if the rear bumper was colour coded
honestly - what more could i have done lol

Still your fault no doubt.

Thanks for the advice, I went for the eddy! Had mot few days ago with no advisories and recently serviced, cambelt done yesterday (4 years old change). Great drive, test drive it twice and no issues, and if course on my journey home with my eddy the brakes decided to whistle sometimes when pressed at high speeds!?! Maybe the car is happy to have me as an owner and is signing to me haha but in all seriousness that does concern me. Orange, apples, pears.....
-
good buy,,, i have found in my experience ( and i used to sell cars for arnold clark as well ) that the selling garages so called service isnt worth a sh*t.
they rarely change the plugs
they put crap oil in
and they just skim the rest
anything to keep the costs down.
i bought my car around 4 months ago and they serviced it before the sale marking on the service book that plugs etc had been changed, it also had 8 months mot.
the first thing i did was re-mot it ( best way to check for any defects and only £50 or so )
the mot was clean.
around a month ago i had it serviced and the spark plugs have been in there for years lol ( i knew it )
got a complete oil change ( plugs and oil supplied by me )
changed all the filters
engine flush
and brake fluid change.
tbh it doesnt drive any different as its only 4 years old but at least i have piece of mind the correct stuff is in the car now.
as for your whistling brakes !!!
cant recall ever hearing a whistle before but one possibility could be the surface rust on the brake discs just gently hitting the brake pad as the wheel is rotating,,, if it is it will dissappear in a few days.
may be something completely different but brakes do not like sitting around,
keep us posted buddy :happy2:
