Title: What DSLR
Post by: Oli on January 26, 2013, 08:13:46 pm
Seeing as you lot are so helpful when i want to spend my money..... :happy2:, I am looking at getting an DSLR camera, to compliment my compact a Lumix TZ18, great little camera, that really does produce some stunning pictures.  However now I have a MacBookPro on the way, to help with editing videos of the GOPRO, I think now would be the time to get an SLR, to fully utilise this machine.

Don't want to spend a fortune, just looking for a  nice intro to DSLRs, to be mainly used for family shots, some scenery, and some actions shots on the boat etc.

Any advice much appreciated.  Cheers all :happy2:

As little as possible, itll be my first jump up from a compact.  Ive been looking at a Lumix DMC G3 £300 - Any good?

Ive had an expensive two months with chrstmas, two holidays, brakes, exhaust, stage 2, gopro and mac......    still its not a rehersal.  Would be nice to get it before next weekend as off to the Dam for a weekend break, and can test it out

If I suggested one though but you'd go and spend 3 times as much.

Essentially the same internals as the K-5 I have just traded in (should have said yesterday I could have done you a deal ). Weather resistant body and lens.  :happy2:

Well I thought I would get in early.

The problem with the cheaper ones is a lack of weather sealing on both lens and body. It wont make it waterproof but will handle rain and the odd splash or 2.

One of my friends bought the D5100 as the D5200 has just been released.

+1 for dpreview.

Also, you may find you get a higher model secondhand camera for the same price as an entry level brand new camera.

Use www.camerapricebuster.co.uk to compare prices.

Have you looked at the canon 1100D?

Sounds like we did similar to you, as bought a Lumix TZ20 as bottled it when looking at DSLR's and also bridging cameras due to they complexity.

Now wishing we had been a little braver and gone for it as I would really like to improve my photography skills so would also be interested in the recommendations  :happy2:

Seems to be 3-4 good ones for around the £3-400 budget;

Nikon D3100
Can EOS 1100
Panasonic Lumix G3
and a Pentax, that I currently cant find the model number

The real money goes on the lens - the one shipped as standard are usually cr@p and don't show the camera's true potential - get down to a photography shop where they can couple a decent body and lens for you, rather than forking out for the standard rubbish.  You will most likely get a really good deal on a slightly used setup too, allowing you to have a camera that would normally be way out of your price range new.
