bought a new sony viao laptop from pc world around 2 months ago.
wanted a windows 7 laptop but told they only sell w8 ones now,
there was 2 display laptops left on the shelves with windows 7 but they looked old so went for the windows 8 one on the understanding from the salesman that if i didnt like windows 8 i could absolutelly install windows 7 back onto it if i liked.
i persisted with w8 for a while but when i realised i could not get the laptop to connect to my printer which has a bluetooth dongle in it ( the dongle which makes my printer wireless is not compatable with windows 8 and YOU CANNOT BUY a w8 dongle as they just dont exist ) i then decided to install windows 7 onto the machine.
i had problems overwriting the viaos security measures which protected the operating system even with multiple phone calls to pc world 24/7 support so i decided to put the laptop into pc world shop and get them to install the w7 operating system for me.
they called me a week later to say the copy of windows 7 i gave them was corrupt so i authorised them to install their own version of windows 7 for me, all i had to do was buy a licence key within a month.
job done and i thought everything was ok until tonight, i could not get my computer to find ANY bluetooth devices at all, i called the tech support again and it turns out that although i now have a w7 operating system the actual bluetooth device built into the laptop is configured for w8 and cannot be reconfigured to work with w7 !!!
so i do not have ANY bluetooth capabilities on the computer unless i re-install w8.
so im stuck with a top of the range viao that cant connect to my printer.
my question is before i call pc world to complain is shouldnt they have told me this when i bought the machine that i would have problems if i went back to w7? when i specifically told them i may do this and they agreed it would be ok ?
and when they done the w7 install for me should they not have noticed that there was exclamation marks on the bluetooth settings that could neither be fixed or updated ?
seems a bit unfair, i only need the bluetooth function to print as the printer is upstairs but saying that printing is a pretty important thing.
would value some advice before i call them in case they tell me to naff off
thanks for reading
ps,,, forgot to mention, i called sony for help and they said that because the operating system has been changed they cannot offer technical support, so basically it invalidates the warranty with them.

my printer is a 3 in 1 and is supperb quality so wont be changing it.
and w8 has so many compatability problems with regards to adobe, acrobat, dongles, media player etc etc etc.
i know pc world aint great but i bought from them due to the 24/7 tech support
they didnt tell me about the downgrade problems as they simply didnt know about them due to their limited knowledge of w8, i had to educate them as to the fact that w8 does not prompt you to make a back up disc and they told me thanks for the advice and they would inform their staff
so i know they are bad sometimes but their 24/7 tech support for a tenner a month is pretty good,
do you think they should accept responsibility for this problem for advising me on one of their products incorrectly ?

I just think you need to speak to a actual technician that knows what hes talking about.
Look for their direct competitors  Cheaper and 1000x better.

Agreed Pc world know as much about computers as I know about brain surgery, only buy from them if you know what you want , they have a cheap deal going and you don't need there help in any way, you would get more sense from our cat.

you may be right there, maybe i should have your cat doing the 24/7 tech help, would def be a less frustrating call talking to him/her than some of their so called expert techs.
im gonna call them up just now and kick up sh*t
will post how i got on.

i agree with you deako, if it was just that i would prob buy a new one, the problem with windows 8 though is you cannot view pictures properly or videos, you revert back to a background scaled down version of windows 7 to view anything and even then you can only view around 60% of any pictures from sites like facebook, e,bay, forums like this etc.
adobe / acrobat / media player is still not up to date with the w8 operating system yet and will not be fixed until many more companies are forced to use the op system as the demand is still not high enough yet.
companies wont revert though as they will not use an operating system that is not fully up to date.
also i cannot do anything on photobucket apart from add pictures with w8, you cannot delete etc, i spoke to photobucket customer services on this and they confirmed this.
its annoying when you cannot even view pictures when on this forum etc
im stumped

Call me a simpleton but did they actually install a bluetooth driver as windows 7 doesn't necessarily have all BT card drivers.
What error message does it show in device manager about Bluetooth radios?

yeah they did install the bluetooth drivers, i confirmed this by looking in the settings for bluetooth, there was 3 lines with an exclamation mark on them, i done this with the pc world tech on the phone.
right clicking the lines there is an option to update the drivers on each one, we done this and they where already up to date.
according to the tech guy this confirmed that a pc with pre installed w8 cannot go back to w7 without the bluetooth becoming useless.
i called pc world today and hit brick wall after brick wall,
my complaint was that their staff should not be giving out advice if they are not properly trained in order to do so, and also i should have been told when i paid them to do the w7 install that the bluetooth didnt work.
they where having none of it and only offered me 2 things,
1 - they could look at possibly giving me a bluetooth dongle for the laptop ( on w7 )
2 - they could put it back to w8 for me.
bollocks.
thats all they where willing to do.
to cut a long story short 2 hours later with a lot more pushing from me in the area of their salesmans incompetance and their uograde desk failing to do their job properly they have agreed to look at the laptop again to see if they can get the bluetooth to work ( which they wont be able to do ) and if they cannot fix it they will give me a full refund for the laptop / warranty.
it was £700 the laptop so i will just go elsewhere and buy a powerfull w7 one online.
how the f*ck can they sell these silly w8 computers when so many things either dont work of half work.
for example if you are on this forum using w8 and on a thread there is a picture you must click a button at the bottom of the screen to show in desktop mode, the page then re-loads in the scaled down w7 mode and then you can view the picture / video !!!
bare in mind this will work around 60% of the time and the other 40% of the time you cannot view the picture or video,,,, no way at all with all the proper updates for adobe reader / acrobat / windows media player etc etc etc.
you cant use sights like photobucket
e-bay is a nightmare posting pictures
u-tube is also a hit and miss
and so on.
these problems will not be fixed until the millions of companies out there like photobucket for example change their web site construction in order to make it compatable with windows 8.
this information was given to me by 2 sources, pc world 24/7 technicians and also microsoft themselves !!!
worryingly microsoft said dont worry about it as these companies will have no choice but to change sooner or later but it could take up to 3 years :surprised:
i know new operating systems come with some teething problems but ffs this is ridiculous.
i have to turn into a detective and a pc tech in order to find all these problems out for myself.
absolutelly ridiculous.
if anyone reading this needs to buy a new laptop / computer any time soon please remember these problems and hopefully all the crap i have had to go through will save you the stress.
maybe things will get better with w8 sooner rather than later but i aint touching it again with a barge pole.
thanks for reading and g'day to you

they have confirmed to me that the drivers for my bluetooth chip do not exist anywhere to make it work on w7 but i will give anything a try.
how do i get into compatability mode though ?
thanks

I suspect they didn't actually install the specific BT drivers but instead relied on win7 inbuilt drivers.
Do you know what BT card is installed? There should be a sticker for it on the underside of your laptop though you may need to google the numbers. Alternatively look on the Sony website for your laptop model, see what BT card is installed and see if there have win 7 drivers on Sony site or on the web.

richwig when i am typing 2000 words or so i dont care about grammer, this is a chat forum not a phd forum, a relaxed forum with the occasional silly person who contributes noting like yourself.
your matrix style picture is old news and is as tedious as your input, all you do is come into a discussion and try to disrupt it when genuine people are trying to help each other, if you carry this on i will be reporting you for trying to cause trouble, now please go away and play with your lego,

Sorry, I cant understand that.
Does your keyboard not have one of these . on it??

I reckon the solution is not to write 2000 words. That's not 'chat' mate, that's a dissertation.

Inane question.
This Vaio, does it actually have bluetooth on it?
Just cos the keyboard has the image, doesn't mean jack.
If this laptop was designed for W8 onwards there is a good chance that sony didnt install a bluetooth card into the chassis.

yeah it has bluetooth def
-
bluetooth might be built into the wifi card, which card does it have?
-
Id still suspect you can get win7 to enable the bluetooth with the right drivers, however coming from a different angle...
why not ditch bluetooth and connect to your printer wirelessly?
something like this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-PS310U-Single-USB2-0-Storage/dp/B002LB8XFK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1359502899&sr=8-1
has worked for me for a printer that didnt have built in wireless.
just a thought
-
cheers guys, will try today to update the bluetooth drivers directly from the model number on the sony web site.
not keen on the wireless additional part, the laptop was £700 and shouldnt need me to add things on to it externally to make it work, also not having bluetooth - period - is not great.
if i cant update myself and pc world cant fix the bluetooth they will refund the whole lot, i will then buy the strongest w7 laptop i can find on the web
-
Since upgrading my Sony Vaio laptop to Win8, I have a devils job seeing my NAS and also get recurring WiFi dropouts; all Win7 Laptops/PC's + PS3 + iPad + TV are fine and dandy.
I've tried lots of "fixes" on the web, but it just isn't playing ball... got to be software NIC related.
I have a full copy of Win7 Ultimate, so it may just go back on.
Perhaps if you can't find a solution tell them to whack Win7 on it and you'll be happy.

i have windows 7 on it just now, that is where the new problems are lying,
as said earlier it came with w8 and have lots of probs with adobe, etc etc etc and it is not bluetooth dongle supportive so put w7 on it and the bluetooth internal chip will not work now, according to sony i have no back up from them as if you change the opp system on one of their comps they will wash their hands of you.
it would seem from my problems and your problems that if you change a pc to w8, or a w8 pc back to w7 it just doesnt work properly no matter what you do.
this is why i thinking to get the refund and buy the strongest w7 laptop i can find.
i paid £700 for the viao so i am thinking that will buy me a good / fast w7 machine as they must be a lot cheaper now due to w8 launch.

Sorry, haven't got much to say about the problem, but feck me,I'm glad my laptop is only just over a year old and running Win7!
I have heard of these sort of problems with win8 and I'll be perfectly honest, that if my laptop died and I had to buy a new one,I would be seriously looking at an AppleMac.
In my view,I think it's hugely arrogant of MS to expect the software companies to play catchup with their OS,because they have made it such a different system from the previous versions and didn't give the software makers a chance to adapt thier products.
Smacks of the old MS bigboy bullying tactics again. :fighting:

Why? Apple do it too. You cant have backward compatibility for ever for every conceiveable product.

WTF?!?!?
Why is it arrogant of MS? IIRC they released a developer version from Sept 2011. That's what 16 months to have a look and set things up? Similar things have happened with other Windows versions. The first year is always hit-and-miss.
The difference between apple and MS is that Apple develop their hardware, whereas MS just develop an OS that has to be compatible with loads of hardware configurations. If MS had gone down the hardware route decades ago, I doubt Apple would have been around today.
-
To be fair it's exactly the same as when Apple moved from OS 9 to OS X...

perfectly said buddy, i agree with everything you say apart from the apple thing.
only thing that scares me about buying an apple is taking the time to learn a whole new desktop layout but at least you know that when you invest the time it WILL actually work.

Totally ditched the laptops/ computers now and just fiddle about on the ipad. Luckily I don't need to bring my work home with me so it just about covers things.
-
Use my iPad more than my laptop now... Made it pretty redundant, there's a great app to Remote Desktop a PC, so all those window program's can be used too.
-

....Hi Scott (and welcome back!),
Yes there will be a learning curve but one of Apple's great strengths is making the UI (User Interface) both intuitive and very user-friendly and so that learning curve is both easy and enjoyable. You soon get used to it - Just like driving a car after a van.
The downside is that Apple computers are much more expensive than Windows machines.
The bottom line is that both Windows and Macs are just machines that can go wrong. As the Japanese say: "A crashed computer is as valuable as a stone".
-
hi red, nice to hear from you.
when i get this thing refunded an apple is something i just didnt consider,,,, maybe i should.
since i paid £700 for this and warranty on top i guess it wont be that much more for an apple machine.
hmmmm

We arent talking network printers. We are talking sh*tty home desktop inkjets. And in most cases, driver compatiblity for network printers is much better with far better business support.
And ours cost way more than that, Xerox MFDs as big as a greenhouse. In our case, we just use the latest Xerox Global PCL/PS drivers for everything.
-
Agreed better support for network printers, but its not just the printers its all the other stuff that gets attached to PC's etc like card readers, barcode printers to name but two !! always take a bit longer before the new drivers appear.

Scott instead of just acting like a victim, please take a look at how all your threads go and why. Looking at how you post will solve your issues .
Yes lots of people jump on you when you are actually innocently just being yourself, talking about things, but the way you post and the amount winds people up unfortunately.
Surely for your own health it would be better if you just found another place to talk and chat. Where people will ultimately respect you more. :drinking:

It takes two to tango, so why is it that I don't seem to have any serious problems with Scott's posts (other than punctuation which he has actually improved a bit)?
We each have a choice not to bother to join in a discussion if we are either bored or irritated by it. But why do some folks here allow themselves to get so wound up by Scott? It's a bit like a school playground sometimes. It can be quite entertaining though! But it winds him up.

well said red thank you for proving there IS actually nice people on here ( most members are )

It takes two to tango, so why is it that I don't seem to have any serious problems with Scott's posts.
There are no serious problems apart from windows 8. I know of at least 641 maybe even 642 members who after the 4th and 5th page of Scotts threads lose the will to live. Unless we give him a lobotomy it isn't going to change. So with this in mind, please pass me the hand drill and hold his legs for me. :fighting2:
Can i also add i dont have a problem with his Grammar.( apart from the lack of capital letter in his first word ) for some reason that gets me. :scared:

people are free to read whatever they wish topcat - yourself included sir
most of the larger answers on this thread where directed to one specific member whom i was in a conversation with before a few people came in and started saying like a drunk person ((( whats all this pissssh man ))) and bumping their gums.
can we not as members just get along with one another and stop picking fights with silly little comments.
there are hundreds and hundreds of threads on this site and i think some people just comment on anything that is new.
it must be like, oh there is a new thread - is it one of my buddies - no,,, im gonna stir things up as usual !!! pretty sad really
it stops people random chatting in fear of getting slated by the playground gang, these forums are meant to be about helping each other out as enthuisiastic owners of the mk5 gti,,, HELPING EACH OTHER, not slagging each other off.
personally i think most members on this site are very nice indeed whom i enjoy having a conversation with about ALL topics.
if the topics are not meeting the approval of the people upstairs then let it be known and set stricter guidelines, to have a pick at a topic of ANY nature ( as long as it isnt rude ) in the RANDOM SECTION is not fair unless you want to rename the section the ( random chat but only if i like it ) section.
playground bullies play elsewhere, just wish there was someone with the b***s to weed you out.

....For Moderators it's a fine line between being tolerant and allowing folks some leeway and being draconian and jumping on folks. It's not an easy task.
It's inevitable that any forum with so many members and differences in their opinions will have wars of words from time to time. It's also human that people form bonds and relationships even virtually in cyberspace and that those small groups support each other. It's also natural for people to want to feel popular and being witty at someone else's expense sometimes helps that.
Then there's just pure banter, teasing and fun. Some like to dish it out but can't take it themselves. People are complex.
I'm confident that the Moderators will agree when I say that, unless exchanges get personal and insulting, they work themselves out without Mods locking or closing threads (which is never popular).
Actually the forum medium is a good leveller - I have certainly been a tool in my forum history and have learnt and benefitted from being pulled up or knocked down on some things.
My advice to you, Scott, is don't always bite back, be better than those who you see as bullies. But if it's your nature to bite............ :popcornsoda:

Robin makes some very valid points, but I think we all now realise Scott isn't great at taking on advice. This is one of the reasons (from what I have read) that people give up trying to give him advice, and instead have some fun with someone they know will bite!
This is a forum full of different personalities so this lovely little fluffy world you envisage Scott is never going to happen. If you can't deal with the banter on the this forum then sit back and read a bit more before going in with your size tens on, creating topics that you know people will have some fun with........

Why is it that some of the moderators on here spend their time winding people up? And when they bite, start crying about it!
There was a thread yesterday that was created solely for this reason. :stupid:
Seems to me that those same people have become bored of this forum; the same old discussions and threads, perhaps its time to seek pastures new!?

when i first joined this forum my biggest argument was against yourself red, im sure you remember, but time passed and after realising i jumped the gun way to quickly with you i now see you as one of the most helpfull people on here, also the fact you dont really hold a grudge def helped.
just goes to show how wires can get crossed and after a bit of calmness things can completelly flip round.
also with regards to the moderators on here, i do understand their enthuisiasm for the topic of mk5 gti is what brought them here in the first place and i do understand that sometimes it may be a difficult balance between moderator and member.
i know one thing that really p*ss*s one of them off is my reluctance to use capital letters etc, minor i know but how is it if i use word on my comp it automatically grammer checks for me and inserts capitals etc as you type - it doesnt do that here, is there a way of doing this ?
a thread on w8 isnt the most interesting i know but to be honest if i knew the problems with w8 that this thread has highlighted before i went out and bought one it would have stopped me in my tracks, something like this topic can be SO boring if you dont need it - but if you do then that's a different story.
from my experience on problem solving in regards to this subject over the last month or so it is my opinion that the information available on the web does not cover the problems this operating system has, also the same testing the feedback from microsoft who will never admit to anything, sony themselves who are not really sure either, pc world - bl**dy useless and would be as well asking the checkout operator at my local tesco as technical answers will be the same, also online forums and w8 review videos all do not cover the compatability issues on w8.
just to clarify before i lock this thread soon
the title and subject of this thread was to ask questions with regards to w8 / w7 compatability
if anyone reading this needs a new comp soon you should be aware of the following and maybe take red robins advice and buy a mac.
w8 machines have the following problems
1 - bluetooth dongles DO not work on w8 machines and w7 dongles etc are NOT compatable
2 - adobe does not work properly on w8
3 - windows media player does NOT work properly on w8
4 - sites like photobucket WILL NOT allow you to edit / delete pictures when using w8 (spoke to their tech dept on this )
5 - any pics / vids on this forum for example will not show / play on w8 and have a 60% chance of playing when using scaled down version of desktop on w8
6 - you constantly have to flip between the w8 op syst & the desktop ( scaled down w7 ) feature on w8 to make interactive websites work / play media
7 - lots of updates on w8 are just not there
8 - if you manually turn the power of on a w8 machine while it is downloading updates you WILL fry the hard drive ( confirmed by pc world )
9 - compatabilty with other peripherals is a nightmare and is not always available so cameras etc dont always work
10 - the technical knowledge of any kind of tech support is very limited on w8 due to sparce training
11 - you DO NOT get prompted to back up the op syst & need to figure it out yourself,
12 - op syst is 17gb meaning you need a 32gb usb stick, you cannot back onto dvd etc, either a usb stick or optical drive and it must be a dedicated one ( i originally used an optical drive with 1 terabite of space then realised that you CANNOT use the rest of the drive as it will corrupt the w8 back up ) the back up source you use must be dedicated.
this is the main problems with w8 and to be fair it's quite a lot
if you where to put w7 onto a w8 machine the pc manufacturer will wash their hands of you and your bluetooth chip which is on the motherboard WILL NOT WORK and with no way to fix it, also you cannot just whack in a w7 disk and expect it to work, the op systems safety measures makes it a very difficult job unless you are a comp expert.
also the power management system will need to be de-activated as it is also not compatable.
all this is boring crap i know and im expecting a matrix style logo from a trusted forum member :jumpmove: but at least anyone reading this will know the op systems problems and WHEN your comp bites the dust one day maybe you will remember some of w8's problems.
where is my matrix logo now :booty:

....That's only because I'm such an experienced, wise and *cough* mature *cough* forumite. There's things in life far more important than discussions on car forums (will someone please tell me what they are).
It there's a trick it's to stay cool and be prepared to learn and accept if you are wrong even though at the time you felt very passionately that you were right.

Scott
You could try typing whatever you want to post into word then copy and paste the text onto here after you have let word do all its checks.
-
+1. Please edit your posts scott - it makes it easier to read and people are more likely to help out. Paragraphs and capitalisation are used for a reason. Make use of them.
-
red i just used the e-mail link on their web site and i got a response pretty quickly, cant remember who it was that replied though.
so am i right in thinking the only way to use automatic spellcheck / autogrammer etc is to use word then copy and paste ?
isnt there a tool on this forum that does any of this ?

3 - Windows media player does NOT work properly on w8
4 - Sites like photo bucket WILL NOT allow you to edit / delete pictures when using w8 (spoke to their tech dept. on this)
5 - Any pics / vids on this forum for example will not show / play on w8 and have a 60% chance of playing when using scaled down version of desktop on w8
6 - You constantly have to flip between the w8 op syst & the desktop (scaled down w7) feature on w8 to make interactive websites work / play media
7 - Lots of updates on w8 are just not there
8 - If you manually turn the power of on a w8 machine while it is downloading updates you WILL fry the hard drive (confirmed by pc world)
9 - Compatibility with other peripherals is a nightmare and is not always available so cameras etc. don’t always work
10 - The technical knowledge of any kind of tech support is very limited on w8 due to sparse training
11 - You DO NOT get prompted to back up the op syst & need to figure it out yourself,
12 - op syst is 17gb meaning you need a 32gb usb stick, you cannot back onto dvd etc., either a usb stick or optical drive and it must be a dedicated one (I originally used an optical drive with 1 terabyte of space then realised that you CANNOT use the rest of the drive as it will corrupt the w8 back up) the backup source you use must be dedicated.
Also the power management system will need to be de-activated as it is also not compatible.
all this is boring crap I know and I’m expecting a matrix style logo from a trusted forum member but at least anyone reading this will know the op systems problems and WHEN your comp bites the dust one day maybe you will remember some of w8's problems.
Where is my matrix logo now?

It's just that a consistent username helps someone to help you because progress can be more easily made as your conversation develops.
It's hard enough trying to remember usernames on a large forum such as this one without the added confusion of name changes.
