Judging by the web address it's a countdown to VW's official launch of a Golf R of some version.

Expect the block of ice to melt and reveal as the countdown progresses.

MK7 R

http://www.carsuk.net/2014-vw-golf-r-mk-7-teased-ahead-of-geneva-debut/

This also confirms that the pics we saw in the other thread were not the actual Mk7 R...which is great as those pics looked so bland

When I klicked on the link it showed me a picture of a polo with r line trim not a golf r or no block of ice, so I seem to be getting a differant link ? Any ideas why ?

That's because you didn't use the full link. If you add the home part at the end, you'll get to it  :happy2:

Why would they make a big fuss about a MK6 Golf R Cabriolet? Everyone has known about it for ages. I can't even believe they're still going to try and sell it to be honest.

Vortex posted it on their FB page and the full report on their site its the MK6 R cab.

As you say with the MK7 out it makes you wonder why they are bothering, it should've come out 6months to a year ago

It's beginning to look like pure marketing hype to try and sell the Mk6 R Cab.

The melting ice block is a great concept, but......

Someone's looked and thought - sh*t, how we gonna flog these.

It's like they forgot to release it.

Completely pointless. Or just a way of getting rid of the rest of the Golf R body parts they had made because the Golf R undersold due to its ridiculous price.

Probably right there but I bet the Mk6 R cab is still a ridiculous price too. I wonder if it was held up in development or something? Why on earth would you launch a new model of an old version just as you start to market the new one?

I bet it will be knocking on £35k, the Golf GTI cab is horrendously priced as it is.

The only company I can think of that do is Renault as they done it with the Clio and the 5 but they was basic campus models not top of the range £35k+ models

Didn't VW sell both the MK2 Cab and MK3 cab way into the production of the newer models?

Mk2 Cab didnt exist Nathan. But yes, they made the Mk1 cab until 1993/1994. Way past even the Mk2 production dates, into Mk3. And the Mk3.5 cab was into production well into the Mk4 model, but they facelifted it so it "looked" like the Mk4.

Pass, I'm a bit young to remember that. If VW have done this in the past with other cab versions of the golf then them doing it with the R is nothin new

Ah yes thats right, I remember my mate having a Mk1 cab, dark blue it was and IIRC it was a G or H reg, lovely car.

Er, what? That screenshot is a Polo. General consensus is that VW are making a big fuss over the MK6 Golf R Cabriolet, launching it at Geneva etc.

Thats just a Polo R line. Which is basically a Polo 1.2 TSI with sportier bodykit.

Are we sure this is the MK6 R Cab???

If you look at this picture the LED running lights seem to be in a lower position to the MK6 R, bit of a disappointment if it is the MK6 R to be honest. The photos I have seen of the MK7 R look very tame!

This. All speculation right now.

But if they go to all this trouble for the mk6 cab it will actually be a massive let down.

So, the press release is out. Starting at £38,770 RRP without any options.  :stupid:

Quote
Meet the new Golf R Cabriolet, the first-ever open-top R model and the fastest-ever production open-top Golf.  At the heart of the new range-topping cabriolet is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre engine producing 265 PS, connected to a standard six-speed DSG gearbox transmitting power to the front wheels.  The new car has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph, with the benchmark 0-62 mph sprint taking just 6.4 seconds.

Design cues include a bespoke front bumper with gloss-black grille and ‘R’ logo, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with black housings, gloss-black door mirror casings and black-painted brake calipers with R logo.  Side sill extensions, a gloss black rear diffuser framed by chrome-tipped exhausts either side and smoked LED tail lights complete the look.

Bespoke ‘R’ suspension lowers the ride by 25 mm in comparison with the standard Golf Cabriolet.  Wheels are 18- or 19-inch ‘Talladega’ alloy wheels in either ‘Sterling Silver’ or optionally ‘High-gloss Black’.

The interior features four individual sports seats in ‘Vienna Cool Leather’ and ‘R’ logos in the head restraints, while the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake grip and gear lever all have contrasting grey stitching.  The pedals have brushed aluminium caps, while the doors and dashboard feature ‘Silver Lane’ aluminium decorative inlays.

Standard specification includes RCD 310 DAB radio with MDI (multi-device interface) and Bluetooth telephone connectivity.  As on all Golf Cabriolet models, the fully electric insulated hood is operated by a switch in the centre console, and can be lowered in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 18 mph (and raised in 11.0 seconds).

The Golf R Cabriolet will be available to order this spring, priced at £38,770 RRP OTR.  The Golf Cabriolet range costs from £21,040 for the entry-level S 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, rising to £30,765 for the GTI 2.0-litre TSI 210 PS with DSG gearbox.

Scirocco R had no problems being 2wd only. Probably due to the extra strengthening the Cab chassis requires. No room for a rear diff/prop.

Still horrendously expensive.

No 4wd?? I thought the whole point of the golf R was 4wd. It Definitely isn't worth £40k IMO
