Title: Chassis notch?
Post by: Aweful_Truth on January 31, 2013, 11:58:04 pm
I know what it is... But, I don't understand how it gets you lower and it sounds pretty risky! Heard about it a lot but never really understood how it helps?

Ohh dear lord.....

Basically you chop a notch out of the chassis leg, so that the drive shaft doesn't foul it.

It anyone... DARE get a chassis notch on here, Im selling my car immediately!  :fighting: :fighting:

....I know how you feel, Rich.

And I can't imagine that an insurer would honour a claim on a car with a chassis notch. Just because loads of people do it doesn't make it a wise thing to do.

It sounds scary to do to a MK5 GTI  :scared:

Few of my mates with snow plough low Polo's and Lupo's talk about doing it.
They only deal in abused arches, broken splitters and smashed oil sumps.

It was enough to make me forget a chassis notch immediately

Ooo this has raised some opinions  I wouldn't get it don't my self, I just didn't know the point in it but do now! Not my cup if tea, but that guys golf in the link is very nice

Cars with notched chassis, over stretched tyres, and super slammed are not for me. I think that the Golf in that link is spoilt by it.

I expect drivers of such cars to wear dropped jeans exposing their underwear and a baseball cap worn sideways and with a dead flat peak - The style of a certain type of teenager.

But..... Each To Their Own

Ive got one as only needed when you go low to stop your driveshafts hitting the chassis. The car still drives the same but I will say if this isnt done by an pro it could cause serious issues. I see some people do them in their drives on edition   A proper job will cost you £150-£200 to be cut, welded & sealed properly

I'm 32 a father of 3 and don't run over stretched tyres and only sit the subframe on the floor when parked!
I don't wear caps or jeans without a belt, but I had my 'notch' done at the garage that fitted my 'air' and could guarantee the workmanship to the highest level. :innocent:

Apparently you now need an IVA test done if you do this so could also be quite costly!

Did they guarantee that in the case of a head on collision that the chassis leg wont fold in half?

Knowing a bit about welding, although the weld would be as strong if not better it still releases stress from the chassis from being cut, and on that knowledge alone Mr Ballentine im out!!lol agree with this quote ^ :fighting:

....Very good point, Rich!

How do the MOT testers judge chassis notching?

I'm not anti chassis notching per se but am interested in bringing any negative safety aspects to anyone's notice who is considering doing it.

Interested to know more opinions as i would probably end up doing it, depends if i hit the limit of the coils or not

I've read a lot on notches.
I'm going for 2.5inch hole cutter and the metal to be welded in is 4mm thick tube.
There was a chap on edition who had a nasty head on in his car which had both sides notched and it didn't show up any extra problems from the damage. Now I know that doesn't make it ok as I guess crash tests would need to be done, but providing the metal is thicker than the original and both sides are welded correctly, I can only see it as being as strong if not stronger

Who would buy a car which has been notched?

Even if you knew all about notching (I didn't before I read threads here), how could you trust someone else's notching work?

Surely on inspecting a notched car a prospective buyer would shy away? I know I would.

strange how your all going on about a bit of metal cut out   :rolleye: how many people are driving around in crashed cars these days that don't even know its had major welding done to it  :rolleye:.I drove and many people do drive older cars that have had full resto work done on them but who knows how well the job has been done and if in a crash all the welds are going to hold up to an impact you just don't know its that simple. its a very small amount of work for added clearance and scene points  :signLOL:

I think robin you would make a judgement at the time. For example if you trusted the garage the car had the work done, and it was done - lets say 2 years ago. The car is still working fine. A notch would make me think, not sure about shying away though  :ashamed:

....Good point. I think you are probably right that if JKM (whom I trust a lot) advised me it was okay, then I wouldn't shy away. However, in reality I doubt very much indeed that I would be buying a car which was so low - My Mk5 GTI on KW coilovers is quite low enough!

I think if you know who did the notch then I would buy the car, that said I think the only cars that I'd buy notched are those that are bagged..

There's low and then there's low...
