Title: Koni FSD+F1 Assy Problems
Post by: Beeps on February 06, 2013, 05:00:59 pm
Calling anyone on FSDs!

I have a Mkv GTi on standard springs (did not want to go lower) and FSDs. I put on F1 Assymetrics at the same time as the shocks and since then I have been fighting to keep it within a lane on a motorway! It feels like it has toe-out even though I have had it checked twice with full 4 wheel alignment at different places and 4 garages have now tested it for steering play - it randomly tramlines off line. I have tried changing the tyre pressures by plus/minus 2 psi but it does not cure the dead feeling when straight ahead. Once cornering it feels ok, but wheel central has no feel to it, every gust of wind moves the car and you feel you are driving a van!

The car handled great before the mod but was a bit rough for the family.

So, do you think I have a shock problem or are the soft walls of the F1s not suited to the FSDs?

I did 50k on my mk4 with FSDs and GSD3s and loved it - the Mkv is a disappointment at the moment.

Do I change the tyres or the shocks? Are the standard springs not suited to FSDs? Help please!

I have that setup and it's fine for me. That is to say FSDs on stock springs with f1 asymmetrics sometimes I find the car can fight between the tramlines given a sense of loose steering although that's my merc rather than the golf.

Thanks Mad_Pete,  yes it does feel "loose" and I do not know if it is the tyres or the shocks.

Are your tyres installed correctly? You have to have the 'outside' label on the outside...

Shocks shouldn't make the straight line steering wobbly, I'd say something is loose. Got any mates with a spare set of wheels as that's any easy test.
