Title: Rear Bumper - getting rid of marks.
Post by: adminkatana on February 06, 2013, 10:02:14 pm
Hi,

Noticed this on my car for a while now. They appear to be odd marks almost like the plastic has discoloured on the rear bumper. Anyone experienced this before? Is it just the age of the car? (06) Anyone know of any tips to fix it?

Thanks.

Could you highlight the marks on that photo.. I can't actually see any on this monitor!?

If they are on the un-painted bottom half of the bumper then Autoglym bumper care is pretty good at renovating faded areas.

Thanks, I'll give Autoglym a go! Heres a larger photo. (right click & open in new tab/ window to see full size crop)

The only way I can describe it when looking in person is 'bands' of 'faded' lighter coloured plastic. I tried back to black at one point. I just wonder if its the age of the plastic? Might be an excuse to put an Ed30 bumper on

They look like buffer trails, makes me wonder if someone has been over them with a machine polisher.

Isn't that section really cheap to replace?  I think I'd be replacing it if it was mine

To be honest... IIRC you can get those rear sections for about 50 quid brand new.  :happy2:

Great, thanks for your help!

How much do you reckon someone would charge to sand/ smooth the top half of the bumper and paint it black? Leaving the area above the exhaust as is.

Looking into getting the top part of mine smoothed painted too. Looks worse on Red!

I'd say a bodyshop would charge between £150-£200 to smooth and paint. Probably just as easy and same price for them to do the whole bumper.

Sounds good. Where about are you based/ getting the work done?

It's Newton Abbot, but I had several quotes from different guys and they all quoted roughly the same, so you should be looking at no more than £125 / £140 to get it done. It is more expensive than a new textured bumper, but it will look a lot nicer.

It's this that makes me glad I live in Devon. Less frost, and the Devon County Council has just announced a huge scheme to fix ALL potholes. I hope not too much damage is being done!

I'm only in East Sussex, but the potholes just seem to be terrible this year. Both front Monzas used to be spotless but they now have some rather nasty scratches from deep potholes :(

Like so  :happy2:

Got mine from a company called Readytofitpanels who source the bumper new from VW (the GTI lower black plastic bumper is £62 plus £5 for toe eye cover), then spray it to the colour you want. A few members have used them and a friend is getting front, rear and sides done as we speak   check out ebay as try list on there, and see if this photo looks familiar  :signLOL:

I had mine done a while back so prices are higher now - it's a lot of work to high build prime and spray the black plastic bumpers and splitters so not cheap. I think they charge about £200 now but that includes the genuine vw part. They do side skirts and splitters too so you may be able to get an all in quote
