they are a great unit , gives you the option for ipod connection (mdi) and bluetooth. you may need a new canbus gateway though

What's the going rate for an RCD510?
Can you hook up a reversing cam to the DAB version?
Is there a version of the RCD510 that won't need a Can bus upgrade on a 55 plate GTI?
If not which gateway is best to go for?

Sorry for all the questions, just thought it's a good thread to add the content to.  I've been wanting an RCD/RNS 510 for ages now.

With any of these headunits can you have dvd/tv upgrade? And if i was to get an aftermarket one say pioneer or something similar what is this can bus upgrade that i need?

Sorry to sound dumb, new cars are fancy and beyond me  :chicken:

A basic RCD510 will cost around £180+ and the RCD510 DAB is usually £220+. RNS510 go from £350 for the early version and from Version C (then on they are LED versions), expect to pay £450+.

I'm pretty sure that for all the aforementioned Headunits that you will need a Canbus upgrade in a 55 plate or else you'll get battery drain. Personally I'd PM Eddie-NL on here and see if he can help you regarding this.

RNS510 is the one for the RVC (Rear View Camera) although IIRC there are some versions of the RCD510 with the video capability but are rare so stick with the RNS10 for that feature.

I have a RCD510 DAB and its great, I'm not bothered (and don't need) a Sat Nav so was enough for me but now I want to add the RVC so am going for a RNS510.

I picked RNS 315.

With RNS 315 advantages are

You can get Nav, bluetooth, Dab and rear view camera support all in one

Disadvantages are

Wont work with red dot MFD
Smaller screen
No DVD
Difficult/Expensive to update maps

Seller link. Not me. It came packaged from SW London based SATNAV systems, although seller not branded as them. Units removed in bulk when fitting SATNAV units to new cars (fleet maybe)?

The RCD 510 is a great upgrade, sound is better and has the SD slot, touch screen and pairs really well if you have the OEM bluetooth fitted.  Only thing is if you do go bluetooth then get a newer version of the RCD 510 as it will display the track names for bluetooth audio streaming.

I'm thinking about the RCD 510DAB.
Never had DAB before, does it make any difference/ work well?
where do you fit the long windscreen aerial thingy, under the dash behind headunit? i would'nt want to be able to see it stuck to the windscreen

is this the one to get?

Yes the DAB function is very good, never use mine at all though as I only listen to my downloaded music in the car. I got a AFAR Amplified Internal Glass DAB Aerial from these peeps...

Clicky here (http://www.dabonwheels.co.uk/DAB_car_aerials.html)

I also got a Antenna Adapter from eBay. Only a few quid, some peeps do without this and wire directly into the headunit but I didn't....

I've just bought a brand new RCD 510 off ebay for £200, very happy with it though, how does the ipod connect as I don't think I noticed anywhere that the looms plug in connect, but not properly look yet as fitted it in a rush to make sure it was working lol.

Sorry, me being stupid!

I'm a bit concerned the aerial is going to be a bit of an eye sore stuck to the window. Is there a way it could perhaps be hidden behind the a pillar?

Have a look through this thread, pic of the window mounted one.......

  ~~ Clicky here ~~ (http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,53731.0.html)

As mentioned in that thread, you can get an aerial that replaces your current roof mounted aerial (if you have one), expensive to buy and a fair bit of work to install too. The thread below is a guide on installing an RCD510 with DAB aerial and all. Happy reading....

The windscreen ones are ok, I had the same AFAR one as Martin, reception was ok at best, but replaced it with a short whip roof mount aerial from a new polo with a nice long extension cable (about £15 off ebay) to the headunit. Reception is excellent with little drop off. It is a bit more expensive (about 3 or 4 times) but nothing in the window and far better signal an therefore sound  :happy2:

P.S - once you get the RCD get yourself a Bluetooth kit or it (5k0). Proper piece of plug and play kit  :drinking:

Not sure on the Part number, it's just a polo short whip with a normal base that has the fm and dab connectors. Got it from Eddie :)
