Title: Engine Management Light
Post by: Soundlab on November 27, 2008, 07:44:53 am
Hi Folks,

Drive my car into the office this morning and my what I think is the engine management light is illuminated (bright yellow - can't miss it ! lol !).

Anyone had this before ?  I haven't got my manual to hand - I'm assuming this is a "book it in with the dealer" thing ?

Cheers,
Daz

It's the yellow one on the rev counter...looks like something with a fan on top and on the left side (hard to explain and don't have the manual to hand).  Can't post a pic up from work either.  There's a picture of it on the AA website - which is how I found it was the engine management light.

No mods at all on the car...only got it from the dealer during September.

I'll check it after work and then contact the dealer if it's still on.

Sorry for slow reply.

Nope, no other symptoms at all...car drove perfectly.  Just the warning light suddenly came on.

I doubt it will be anything major mate. A quick wire up to Vag-Com should sort it all out. Hope all turns out ok  :happy2:

It's times like these when having vag-com would be extremely useful.

I'll contact the local dealer later and see when I can take it in to be checked.

Cheers all.

yeh, worth the money imo, helped a mate work out what was wrong with his car, vw wanted lots of money and in the end it cost him £200, dealer would have been so much more, ps hope your is under warranty ?

Yep, I was given an extended 1 years full parts and labour warranty when I bought the car (funnily enough standard 3 yr warranty has just run out !).

Spoke to the dealer after work and took the car straight down there.  They did some tests and said something strange came up - like a rogue fault.  They did a system reset and the light went out.  They took it for a run and found no faults.

They sent the details off to some techies (they'll get the response tomorrow as it'd gone out of hours).  If it's anything dodgy they'll call me back in.  If the light comes back on then they've asked me to take it back in immediately and I can have a courtesy car while they run more tests.

Now I've been able to check the owners manual, the light staying on is to do with the lambda sensor - so it must be to do with a poor air/fuel mix.  I'll keep my eye on it.

Definitely considering a VAG-COM though...would be really useful I think.

Thanks for the link.

Only issue I have is that my laptop runs Linux not Windows (have a desktop running windows...but it'd have to be a bl@@dy long lead ! LOL !).

Anyone know if the software is Linux compatible ?

Hmmm, light came back on again after work today.  Car is now in at the dealers to be checked out.

Intrigued as to what the problem is as it's quite intermittant.

Hi Daz,

hope it gets sorted soon.
Really we need the codes themselves to help diagnose.
Common problems are PCV , dump valve failure , coil pack etc
Is it at specific revs or under load ?

Heres worth a look  http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24952 (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24952)

Just had an update.

Apparently on the inlet there is a valve that opens when the cam is at is highest position ??  Anyway, apparently mine is not closing again and is remaning open.  They've tried one from another car and it clears the fault so a new one is being fitted tomorrow.

I'll try and get more useful info tomorrow as between the phone call and typing this my brain seems to have muddled up everything he just said !
