Title: Another French defectie
Post by: Rocket on July 14, 2009, 01:14:40 pm
Well, after months of hassle with the Golf (it spent about 3/4 weeks off the road this year, trying to sort a coolant problem, which was resolved with a new cylinder head in the end!!!) and the warranty being up next month, decided to change to something newer. I was considering a Mk1 TT previously, until I went to the Renault World Series at Silverstone couple of weeks ago. Went in a mates Clio 182 and thought it was great fun, so after the show I checked about what I could get.

First choice was a 182 Trophy so the gf could learn to drive too, but ended up with something much newer than expected and for a very decent price, which turned out to be this little gem! Absolutely love it! VVT that kicks in at 5500rpm and redlines at 8000!!!! It just begs to be driven hard, so of course I oblige

 :surprised: :surprised:

I kinda like it but can't get away from the 'Nicole' thing, touched on in Fifth Gear last night. In my heart I'd love one but couldn't help but think people would be looking at me as though I was having a mid life crisis!    I know for a fact ten years ago I'd have jumped at the chance!

I hope you'll stick around here mate?

EDIT: Garlic eating surrender Monkey!  :signLOL: :signLOL: (makes me laugh every time I hear that! )

Managed to have a go in one of these about 6 weeks ago, very capable car indeed. I think the 182 has a better interior spec though, stereo, xenons, part leather as standard. Gos like stink though and feels fast

lol, I know what you mean, but I've had nothing but positive comments on it so far, no 'Nicole...Papa' comments, and even complete strangers can't believe its putting out almost 200bhp and comes looking like it does! And I'm just 30 so I think I can get away with not being a mid life crisis  :P haha

Yep i'll be sticking around, prob still come to Edition38 and in this too.

Completely different animal to the TDI. The TDI had loads of get-go-grunt from the start but ran out of puff, and was heavy, where as this is just a f***ing screamer!

looks good mate, should have gone for a trophy though :signLOL: they are a much better all rounder. nice one, see you at french car show!!! ha ha
haha this was too good to get an older Trophy, trust me ;)

This has just a good spec:
MP3 Stereo (not that it needs it, prefer to hear the exhaust and engine)
Recaro's
Xenons
Cornering lights
AC
Speedlines in satin black
Tinted Rears
Cruise Control
Traction Control
ESP

i personally want that front scoop behind the front wheel arch, smooth mod
Scoop stays where it is thanks :P lol

I found a Cup in Nimbus Grey but this was a better price, and tbh there's not alot in it between the 2, this handles as well so I see no point, plus I get goodies in this :D

Good write up on the Clio and agree with the last comments:
"Clio looks fantastic, but I've found the Renault a difficult car to get on with. Its racy set-up and sharp responses mean it's hugely rewarding when tackling twisty B-roads, yet unlike rivals such as the VW Golf GTI, the 197 never gives you the option to take things easy as a daily runabout. If Renault could iron out that flaw, in my eyes the Clio would be the best hot hatch around."

the 197 is supposed to be more user friendly than the 182!! lol, agree though, thats why its big brother the r26 is the best hot hatch around

come on then???? what in??? be careful, the clios are hard work day to day, but when you get shot you miss em, wish i had not sold my trophy sometimes.

lol the Clios are hard work, but it pays off. I know of other previous Clio Renaultsports who have said the same that once the cars are sold they do miss them, so i'm having as much fun as possible in mine.
When the time comes though I'll prob come back to VAG, hopefully with a woosh, but not for a few months, depends how things go financially.

What's so apparently hard to live with about them in day to day life? Would one annoy me?

I'm curious, as the 197/200 Cups are dropping to the kind of money that makes them a proposition for picking one up as a track/'Ring/hooning car. Putting the Golf back standard-ish and abusing one of these things instead.

I'm thinking I could get one on a PCP and then just brush whats left of it back through the dealer's doors in 2 years time on the "hand back"... But I don't want one if it means I'm going to want to be driving it off a pier if I spend more than 10 minutes in a town centre in one.

So, downsides???

Being french, you have to expect things to go wrong, though as with any car nowadays really.
I've had front springs replaced as I felt the travel seemed to clunk on return and the drivers seat is wearing too much, but should be replaced under warrranty.

Some days I feel it can be a bit too stiff when driving around town due to pot holes and other bumps in the road, but then other days I don't even notice it. To help this though, I take it out on some lanes to get a fix, as when you push it as it wants to be driven, it's very addictive, just like a CTR or anything high revving.

I changed over to this for 4 reasons from my GTTDI Golf.
1) The Golf had numerous problems fixed under warranty and the warranty was up
2) The one I bought was only 10months old so i still have 2 years of warranty to rely on
3) the gf can be insured and drive the Clio (wouldn't touch her on the VW)
4) *the most important*
I bought this so that when the warranty is up and hopefully business is going well, I can strip it out to a track weapon. There is also a supercharger and turbo charged options in development which can make these very quick little things too. One's already had a turbo strapped on and tested up to boiling point of 280bhp, but then went bang, but this was on standard internals etc, nothing changed apart from bolting on a turbo! Only thing is the price will be about £3-4k depending on the choice.

I think you'd need to try one for yourself. Where are you based?

I'll have to see if they'll let me have one out on a test drive for a few days. There's also a Renaultsport track day at Oulton next month I may go along to and see if I can snag some pax rides (or even a spin)???

welcome. I might go to that oulton park day, but yet to book anything, so may see me there and get a spin in nicole.
As for the 250, not sure on it myself, rather a R20.

And yep rich, drop is in order. Handling wise, you'd be very surprised at this in standard form, impressed a friend of mine with a 225 tt and 4wd of course, stuck with him around a large roundabout :D

I have just gone the other way, from a 197 to a Golf R32. The Clio was a great little car, but it only does fast. You can't really stick one in 6th and cruise down a motorway in one, it belongs on a B-road or a track. My favourite giant-killer vid is this one, where a Clio driver who appears to know the Nordschleife very well hassles a Porsche driver who obviously doesn't!

Thats why I went to an R26, the clio is a great B-road/track car, but for everyday and motorways its no fun. I do miss mine, and there is a supercharger that may be ready next year, so might end up back in one for a bit of super-fun! lol

Dude you DO NOT stop on the Nürburgring. The marshals will be all over that in a flash. If you stopped, you'd make the situation even more dangerous. What would you do if you stopped anyway? Make him a brew  :signLOL:

The main issue I had was the 4K rpm on the motorway, which a supercharger wouldn't fix. In fact, the car would be even louder, wouldn't it!

You'd probably need to get a longer 5th and 6th gear fitted to make it an everyday car. There was a guy on 197.net whose car went bang on the rollers after having a supercharger fitted. Never really heard anymore about it after that.
