Title: How to find out engine type/code?
Post by: Matthew. on February 10, 2013, 11:01:33 am
Hi guys,

My apologies in advance if this has been asked a million times but,

How can I find out what engine type code my 2006 GTI is?

I've seen the AAX or something like that mentioned in threads etc

Also what are the differences?

My registration is PK06 DYT

Should be stamped on the engine but an 06 car should have a BWA engine.

Look in your Handbook - You will see a sticker with all sorts of gobblygook codes.

Also, I think (may be wrong) it's the first letters of your VIN #.  :happy2:

Thanks for that!

Is the stamp visible with the engine cover still on?

Edit* Thanks Robin!

Or open your bonnet, on the left hand side of the engine block (black plastic belt cover) you will see a barcode sticker. It will have your engine code on that  :happy2:

....Mine is an 06-build spec but left the VW production line in July 2005 and has engine code AXX.

So the most reliable way is to check both your Handbook label and as stated on the car itself  :happy2:

iirc you  have to remove the engine cover to see it.

Robin is correct in that if you look in your handbook the label with your vin and option codes has the engine version printed on it.

....You got lucky - Many of us have just got up and have no other Sunday morning stuff to do and it's raining cats-n-dogs out there. But we do try to help each other. Thankyou for the 'Thank You' - always appreciated  :drinking:

BWA it is.

Is this a revised AXX engine?

BWA it is.

Is this a revised AXX engine?

Basically yes. They have slightly different internals, main difference is the BWA has the better camshaft which causes less wear on the HPFP  cam follower.

AXX actually has forged pistons  :surprised:

Coming from Renaultsport cars, the VW spec/engine revisions are so confusing!

Am I right in thinking the BWA was closer to 210 bhp, AXX 200? Can anyone confirm this?

Don't think so.
iirc the BWA engine was produced to pass stiffer euro emission standards.

They are the same power output mate, it's just a rumour  :happy2:

....I'm showing my ignorance here when I ask if forged pistons are better or not than whatever pistons the BWA has..... ?

I'm no expert but I think they are better. The weak spot in all these k03 engines are piston rings and Rods, the BWA's pistons are up for at least 400bhp anyway. Maybe VW realised they were over engineering it and decided to save a few £'s
