Hi guys, this week ive been looking to buy a gti, had my car on ebay etc but felt a vibration in the gearbox today sn dont want to sell a dodgy car so withdrew the listing.
Took it to my mechanic friend and he said the main bearings are on their way out and it will disintegrate fast and i need a new box..
The car is a 2005 5 speed model and the reg is AF55 MKV.
I have no idea how to find out my engine or gearbox code and any help on that would be great...
Also what other gearbkxes will fit?
Caddy? Passat? Etc...
Really struggling here and need to find a new one asap so i can sell the car for a GTI :)
Any help is appreciated an if anyone happens to have one lying around i will come and buy it tommorow :)

in your service manual at the front there will be a sticker with loads of option codes - it'll say your engine code in there, but not explictly as "engine code - xyz", you'll have to work it out by knowing which one represents your engine code
you can also check on VCDS as your engine code will come up there too.
in regards to your gearbox code i have no idea, sorry but i'd imagine that any gearbox from a FWD PQ35 chassis car (A3/Leon/Golf/Octavia etc etc) with a 1.9TDI engine should be a straight swap and as the 1.9TDI is quite common in the A3 i can't imagine that sourcing one should be too hard.

Treat yourself to a 6 speed: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160973191948?redirect=mobile
Or another 5 speed for cheaper: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=200894956260&index=5&nav=SEARCH&nid=06988914646
