I was just wandering if I have done a right thing or not I've just fitted to my mk5 gti Toyo proxes t1-s 215/35/18 to my 9.5j wheel and they are really stretched has anyone had problems with stretched tyres on here that could give me a few pointers like rights or wrongs they do look real well on the car but just hoping I don't run into to many problems :driver:
-
So did you deliberately put 215's on a 9.5J wheel?
-
215 on a 9.5 is a big stretch. Ive got 225 on an 8 and my friend has 215 on an 8.
-
Did you put the wrong tyres on the wheels on purpose! Why??
Tyre pressure is VERY important, avoid potholes and don't go on track days.
-
Too much stretch that. Id have those tyres off the rims in seconds...
-
I'd say too much but obviously depends on the look you want. Saying that safety should come first as the jury is still out on the safety of tyre stretch full stop!!
As a point of comparison....i've got 8.5j to the front 215/35 and 9.5j rear, running 225/40. The tyres does look stretched but it is very low key. Looks more like well fitted tyres than anything else.
-
Welcome to the forum! I would like to see said stretch. But I do advise going with wider tyres. Toyo's are the strechers favourite as they go wide :ashamed:
-
How does everyones insurers take stretched tyres?
-
How does everyones insurers take stretched tyres?
Dealt with under 'aftermarket' wheels....but they didn't really care tbh. They told me they compare it to having different tyre makes so aren't fussed! Kinda strange but hey

I share the same size combination as this, you must be running odd offset wheels/very low to need the additional mm's provided by this.
I would not be stretching a tyre that far and i'd be wary of if the fitter could get it on the rim, that would be a total pain to mount.

Funny that, as mine classed going from an 88Y (which car came with from a VW dealer) to a 92Y (what the golf should be on) as a Mod...
Fit tyres that fit a wheel, I like to drive my cars...
-
That must be mega stretch the 35 profile will make it more stretch than a 40 profile Aswell I'm guessing you done this to tuck wheels and u most likely wont be going very fast due to fear of rubbing lol just keep an eye on the tyre pressure as it may leak air with that much stretch, if you feel comfortable with that much stretch up to you I was personally worried about 215 40 18 on an 8.5j rim I wouldn't do track days or drive that hard on them incase it pops off the bead, I've driven fairly hard on mine and never had any bother so I've grown more comfortable with the idea of it but its not exactly mega stretch
-
I'm running 225.40.18 9.5 on the rear on a mk5 golf not had any probs touch wood lol
-
Good luck and hopefully you won't kill some innocent person/people when your tyre delaminates/ruptures/explodes.

Was this aimed at me? I can't tell! Haha. Offsets about 30, but ill find out. As said, the stretch doesn't look mad at all. It looks well fitted campared to other stretched tyres. My stretch was easy to put on.

Its funny really. I don't pay anymore for mine but seems you do? Wierd.
I like to drove my car to but not in the same way as I think you mean! I am careful even with my minor stretch. The jury is still out on whether stretch is safe or not. I've yet touch wood have had no problems. They are real low though! We'll see what happens.
Good luck and hopefully you won't kill some innocent person/people when your tyre delaminates/ruptures/explodes.
Don't wanna start an argument....but there is so ±ch out there about safe vs unsafe that I have no clue if they really ate unsafe or indeed they are safe. Yes if yiu have stupid stretch its potentially Sdangerous but so the research just isn't there!
-
Good luck and hopefully you won't kill some innocent person/people when your tyre delaminates/ruptures/explodes.
Yeah because they are well known to be dangerous...........
There is no proof that stretching is a risk and personally i think it looks awesome, just keep an eye on pressures, take corners with precation and watch for pot holes :happy2:
I went out in my mates car the other day he as 9 and 10j wheels running 215/35/19 and 225/35/19, he throws it around corners and it sticks fine also we checked the tyre pressures the same day and one of the 10j's had dropped to 8psi (wasnt seated right on the bead) and was sat solid. Ignore the haters, they love to hate!

I think there are haters & also those who just want fellow owners to be safe and respect what is deemed to be safe.
I really appreciate streched tyres, and think they look very good. I have had no issues myself, nor have my friends. Its the horror storys that the haters blame on strech when actually its mainly down to other factors. The jury is still out on this one... Might be for a long time .
-
whats the regs with poke/stretch thought they couldnt poke past the arches?
cheers
-
I'm not a hater I just think they look sh*te. :happy2:

Tyre tread has to be covered by the arch. The rim can be as far out as you like.
I'm not a hater I just think they look sh*te. :happy2:
Im going to bring my streched tyres round to yours Hedge and show you the way!
-
You'll be showing me something but not the way. :P :signLOL:
-
You'll be showing me something but not the way. :P :signLOL:
Tbh, I dont have much strech, or rim poke so you might actually let me off
-
And I definitely don't do rim poke on the first date. :surprised: :scared:
-
I use to be king of inappropriate stretch (read 165/50/15 on an 8" rim!) which was so stretch the tread was curved inwards! I put them on the car, took some pics then took the tyres back off and put 195's on them! :driver:
Ok - usually there is give and take on slight stretch on a tyre - 215's will go as wide as 8.5 safely - 9.5" I think you'll be pushing your luck. I wouldnt have put them on anything wider than a 9.
I'm going to be running 225/40/18's on my new 9" rims for a little stretch

Just looks daft.
-
The gap between the rim and the tyre edge I use to be able to get my thumb in there with space to spare! (goes looking for the pics)
-
I would be interested to hear what the actual tyre manufacturers think on this.
Surely they design a tyre to be used in a specific manner, on correctly sized rims, which they recommend for the specific tyre widths.
-
there is a website with tells you how far some of the TUV tyres are approved for the maximum mounting width - anything over that is a TUV fail and a 360Euro on the spot fine
-
http://tyrestretch.com/ (http://tyrestretch.com/)
seems like the right place..........
-
Ive ran stretched tyres for years and Ive not had a big problem, only problems ive had is always at tyre fitters that cant bead blast the bead of the tyre on to the barrel.
I've ran some daft stretch's and been trouble free, yet on my E60 BMW which has run flats from factory has cracked a wheel in 3 places, and thats using the correct tyre tyres size supplied by BMW.
Only thing Id say to be thoughtfull of is, that with running skinny tyre's/ stretched tyres is that you bringin the outer edges closes to the road so try and avoid driving like a loony, and I definatly dont reccomend driving it on a track on stretched tyres.
-
^^^What's the point in buying a 'sporty hot hatch' and not being able to hoon around in it occasionally because of your 'cool' tyres. :stupid:

Sorry - posted the wrong link - thats just to give you nightmares of some of the pics.

Ironically, the tyres to rim size have been OK'd by VW!! They just are on the max of what they recommend!
Guys: This link will take you to an ULTIMATE pdf about the legalities of stretch/poke. VERY simply you have upto 30mm of poke, but the tread has to be in the arch.
MY golf was used as their example and i'm naturally running stretch!!

Check my link pal.

I know of a lad who was running stretch, the tyre popped off mid corner and he hit an oncoming car. Insurance refused payout on his car and the Police slapped 6 points and a fine on him.
For the sake of 'just in case' - I think they should be kept in the showground.
-
I put a 215/35/18 on my 9.5 3SDMs apart from the awful ride the back end had no grip and would break loose at the drop of a hat they lasted 250 miles while my 225/40/18s came from camskill.

Well the 215/35/18s seem fine on there my car still rides comfy and its fitted with coilovers which are set low and i havent lost the back end at all trying to put pics up by my photobucket seems to be playing up

You didn't have to give me a thanks for my post above. I have a feeling i didn't help you, but thanks anyway. :happy2:
-
What TopCat I think is trying to say is.......he doesn't like your wheel stretch combo and that it potentially isn't a good make up!
-
As for the thanks its a pleasure everyone is entitled to a say some may not like it but some may as for the waste of a car how? Its the look i wanted so went along with it and am happy with the way it looks my car doesnt get a thrashing every where it goes and is actually well looked after

So! because you think it looks good, you have convinced yourself it is the right thing to do. :stupid: are you really that ignorant of your own safety and willing to risk the safety of other road users because you like how something looks.
Just because your not dead yet, doesn't mean your not going to die.
It doesn't matter what i say as it will obviously be a falling on deaf ears. Anyone who goes through and actually puts a 215 width tyre on a 9.5j wheel is well past taking in any advice. :happy2:
Good luck.

^^^What's the point in buying a 'sporty hot hatch' and not being able to hoon around in it occasionally because of your 'cool' tyres. :stupid:
"hoonin around" I hope is kept to race tracks or similar circumstance,
Is it not the same thing as why buy a car and then stage 3 just to drive up and down to a few show's, or the occasional trip to the supermarket? but never making it reach its potiential.
I still differ on the tought to the extremes that people think how dangerous they actually are, We drove up to Holland last year to MIVW, all 4 of the cars had strecthed tyres yet even on a pretty much contant drive of 300 miles we didnt have any bother.
IMHO They now where as dangerous as people make, Buy good tyres not cheap budget crap and dont go for an extreme stretch there really should be much drama

As said before, there is nothing to say that its dangerous! That is your opinion. I believe it looks great and it is exactly the look I'll be going for. You cant drive on the streets like a tool in a 300bhp golf with your semi slick track cars on the road, that is dangerous and your more likely to kill someone driving too fast than someone is with stretch tyres crawling along struggling to get over the potholes.

On some tyres it tells you to which size rim to fit them to..The police can prosecute by not fitting the tyres in accordance to the manufacturers spec

How much?? Mk1 TT!! I'm sure they drive fine BUT to play around with the engine and get anything done is a nightmare! Saw a mk2 stage 3 TTRS today. Was mint, I was actually in love with it, looked so mean.
My stretch is going as I have major performance plans for this summer for the golf, so need some tyres that can take high speed and cornering at stupid speeds :p

Personal taste is just that, if you like how something looks then who gives a fook. But in this case it is safety related ( possibly :rolleye: ) so people telling you it might be dangerous in some situations is relevant. You cant expect to post pictures up like that with stretch tyres on a fast car without taking some sh*t. Looking good and being safe are two different things. :happy2:
